Cece09 Posted April 6, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Hi all. My daughter will be 18 at the time of our next cruise. My question is will I still need a notarized letter from her biological father? We just got back from a cruise ,she was 17 at the time I had the letter prepared but was not asked for it . It is pretty difficult to get a letter for her because her father works in another country and is kind of a dead beat ;p We got lucky in getting the last letter . He was in town and decided to grace her with his presence. You never know if he will be around or not , and really hasn’t had anything to do with her the past 16 years. So I would rather not have to go through the trouble if it’s not needed. I know at 18 she is an adult , but I’ve heard cruise lines don’t consider them as adults until they’re 21. Oh yes she also has a passport. I’m thinking maybe that’s why they did not ask for the letter the last time. Any advise appreciated. Thanks in advance! Rare sparks1093 Posted April 6, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Since she is adult I don't think that a letter is necessary.
CruiserBruce Posted April 6, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Since she is adult I don't think that a letter is necessary. Agree...under 18 is an issue. Over 18 is not, I am pretty sure. In any event, the cruise lines have policies for this. I would call and ask the cruise line to make sure you are OK.
6rugrats Posted April 6, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2018 She's no longer a minor. No letter needed.
navybankerteacher Posted April 6, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Of course if you still have the letter from last time - just a year ago, you might as well bring it; although most likely not needed.
Bonnie J. Posted April 6, 2018 #6 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Check, but take the letter anyway! Maybe see if he'll email/mail another current one. Have her ask her father for this!
Chloesmom1 Posted April 6, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Once she is 18 it's no longer needed. We used to have to do this too.
zqvol Posted April 7, 2018 #8 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Once she is 18, legally neither the OP or the absent father have any say in what the person does. The letter would be of no effect even if it said that she could not go on the cruise.
Cece09 Posted April 7, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Once she is 18 it's no longer needed. We used to have to do this too. I didn’t think we did! It’s just a little confusing because I know they can’t go on a cruise alone under 21. Just wanted to check ! Thanks for your response:)

Just wanted to check ! Thanks for your response:) Different rationale - lines do not want the risk of dealing with unmonitored youth, rather than a question of parental abduction.
