Can you beat this chair hog story?

Recommended Posts

I am so happy that in approx. 50 cruises across 6 lines, I have never been inconvenienced by chair hogs. Of course, I avoid the main pool area on the Lido deck like a New York City subway car during rush hour and if I use the Serenity deck it's in the later part of an afternoon.

I have always been able to find a lounger on the non smoking aft side on the deck above the pool.

ha ha, it is a loveseat lounger on the 11th floor--right outside the middle doors. I have no idea where smoking or non smoking is and I was smack dab in the middle of the area across from the big screen.

I got there at noon--no signs anywhere about smoking--so I sit down and I have to give up my seat to a smoker that shows up later??? There were tons of chairs and tables available off to the side she was stating is the smoking area--this was a port day. She just wanted to sit on the loveseat. And why in the world would I have to give up my seat to a smoker?

I just don’t understand these people that are saying you were in the wrong. You were not in the wrong, she was. I’ve done a lot of cruises and I’ve seen a lot of people stretched out across sofas, Love seats, clam shells, etc. taking naps, reading or people watching. And not once did I insist they sit up and let me sit there. That’s just plain rude. They were invading your space and wanting to light up right next to you. How rude!

I completely disagree. To have a stranger sit next to you and blow smoke in your face is unexceptable in any situation. But for someone to insist on doing it to you is bordering on ridiculous. Second hand smoke is much worse than the stuff you inhale and is proven to cause cancer. It’s one thing to have smokers in the area where the breeze blows most of it away, but having someone right next to you, the smoke will be unavoidable. I’ve seen many cruisers laying across love seats taking naps or reading. I’ve never insisted they sit up and share it. They got there first, they’re using it, I keep on moving.

You are bordering on ridiculous with some of these statements unverified by scientific literature. How on earth is second hand smoke "much worse" than the stuff you inhale and where has it ever been proven to cause cancer? Love it when old wives tales get perpetuated as scientific knowledge. Let me guess, you are also a proponent of putting butter on burns and feed a cold, starve a fever. Gimme a break.

Wow..you people are funny. So if you sit in a loveseat by your self, you are going to move over and let a stranger sit there cuddled up to you ???

She certainly could have stood there and lit up if she was right it was the smoking side of the ship--she can stand wherever she wants. I am not sharing a loveseat with any stranger--smoker or not

Yes i would move over and have done so many times. Do you know how many cruise friends I have met this way. By being polite and sharing a table or love seat. Please sit down lets chat. This is the norm with smokers, we tend to be...not as up tight as non smokers. We enjoy meeting new people and sharing instead of being rude and treating her like a 2nd class citizen because she smokes and was looking for a seat in the smoking section.

Yeah, but you took those chairs for hours and hours. If all of you up and left, your blankets were the only thing occupying the chairs. That's chair hogging whether you agree or not.

Wow. What a joy you must be to be around.

You planted yourself smack dab in the middle of the deck 11 smoking section:

Carnival Breeze

Cigarette smoking (including electronic cigarettes and personal vaporizers) are permitted in the following areas:

Outdoors: Smoking is permitted in designated areas on Deck 5 (port side, aft, outside the Nightclub) and Deck 11 (starboard side, midship and aft).

I think some of you just look for things to complain about or be offended by. The victim mindset is everywhere in our culture and it is shining through in this thread.

I just think it's mostly funny stories. Kind of like watching dock runners! ;p

And unless there was a sign over the loveseats saying "smokers only" why wouldn't anyone sit there. Does a non smoker have to give up a seat in the smoking area? Like I said, she told me the whole side was smoking, so she could take her smoking self to any chair (and there were plenty of them) and smoke. You cant demand someone share a loveseat.

You, a nonsmoker, chose the smoking section to stretch out on a seat that is designed for two. And when told that the area was for smokers, chose to ignore this and stretch out anyways. I am also a nonsmoker and would not sit in a smoking section. If I did by mistake, I would admit my error and move. In general, if someone politely asked if they could sit, I would move my legs and allow them to sit. What you did was not nice all the way around.

So, if you are sitting in a clam shell up in serenity by yourself, you are going to let any stranger come sit there with you?

I enjoy meeting new people myself, but when I want to relax (just like others do), I want to relax.

And again, she had TONS of areas to choose from to sit and smoke--that whole area was empty, for some reason, she wanted to sit on this loveseat with me. If you are comfortable with that, its your choice, its also my choice to be alone and relax. And there is no occupancy minimums on the loveseats.

So as a non smoker--you have to move when ever a smoker shows up to claim where you are sitting? I doubt it, but you do you, and I will be ok. Just because a side of the ship is ok to smoke, does not give them priority to show up whenever and claim your seat.

And again, there were tons of open areas to sit for smoking, I don't think smokers have seating preference when the walk up and want to smoke.

No, it is not. Carnvial, JH and pretty much everyone acknowledges that it is fine to have a chair where you are spending the day from the time you arrive. If you want to go grab a drink from the bar or a burger from Guys and are going to be gone 10-15 minutes, it is perfectly acceptable to do this. Carnival allows 30+ minutes before returning.

And FYI - we don't even sit on the Lido deck as we prefer our balcony, so I have no dog in this fight.

You were in the middle of the smoking section. Granted, it sounds like you had no idea you were in the smoking section. But, why didn’t you give the smoker the benefit of the doubt? Why are you justifying your error? Learn from it & move on.

According to deck plans there are not “tons” of areas to walk up and smoke. There are designated areas which SanMarcosMan already posted. And yes, I do believe that smokers should have seating preference over a nonsmoker in the smoking section.

Ok, a silly story has turned into such an ordeal.

Just an FYI, I barely even go anywhere near Lido ever since I am a redhead and burn easily, so I stay in the shade (mostly on my balcony). (or the casino...and no I will not give up my slot machine on the smoking side for a smoker there either...do you request I do that too ??? )

Again, there were plenty of seats for this person--she pointed to the smoking area--it was full of empty chairs. I am justifying nothing.

As she pointed out the smoking areas to me--it was that whole side--which had almost all empty chairs and tables. So, yeah..she had plenty of areas to go.

On a side note, there is a smoking area and non smoking area in the casino. If I am playing a slot machine in the smoking area (and that I would certainly know), do I have to leave my machine if a smoker wants to play that?

I have a good one:

We were sitting on the Lido on the Magic, mid-late afternoon, so there are some empty loungers starting to appear. My wife and I are enjoying the sun, music, etc. and there is a lady in the row in front of us that has been saving 7-8 loungers all day. At no point were there more than 3 people present at any given time. Someone tries to come between her row and us in a wheelchair, she is oblivious to this so I get up and push her 6 empty loungers forward to give them space. She glares at me, huffs, puffs, etc. My wife and I pack up to get cleaned up for the MDR and stop at the Red Frog for a quick drink. The same person with the wheelchair is trying to come through. The "CHOG" gets up and violently throws her empty loungers forward to make room. The kicker, she pushes the loungers into the next row where there was a mom and her kid sitting. The backs of their loungers crash onto the moms back and the kids head. Kid starts crying. This lady was real proud of herself for helping out. So proud she turned her back without saying a word to those she just hit and sits down. Boy was she a delight.

What does the lido deck/redhead/sunburning have to do with a nonsmoker sitting in the smoking section? SMH...ALL of your posts are justifications for your erroneous decision. It has got to frustrate smokers doing the right thing to read your post and see nonsmokers sitting in smoking areas irritated by cigarette smoke. Makes zero sense.

Let's flip it around. Someone who smokes should always give up their seat to a non-smoker when they are in any non-smoking area. That settles it!

Wow, insults a wheelchair person and makes a kid cry all within seconds. #talent

Meaning I am never even around that area for most of the cruise :)

You keep justifying a smoker demanding that someone leave a seat that they want, even though there were plenty of other empty seats in their smoking area to go smoke in--talk about frustrating.

There is NO rule at all that a non smoker is not allowed to sit in a smoking area of the ship, and none that say you must give up your seat if a smoker demands it. Please show me anything that states that.

Your post makes zero sense to me, so I guess we are even :)
