Upgrade Fairy is Alive and Well

Curious, can you tell me if you booked well in advance or just a month or less out? Another question, did you book direct with Princess or turn over to a TA? Reason for asking - 14 cruises on Princes, Never an upgrade fairy happening, however we always turn our cruises which we direct book over once final payment is due to Costco for extra OBC. Wondering if the upgrade fairy basically visits non TA bookings +/or last minute bookings such as less than a month out?

This time it was direct with Princess, about two weeks ago, on a cruise that wasn't selling that well. It's in December, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so not a really popular time and it's before final payment.

On the first upgrade, that was booked directly with a TA. We booked a guarantee cabins, so I think you are more likely to get an upgrade then. Princess needs to put you somewhere and all of the inside room were probably full. This cruise was booked in May, after final payment, for a June cruise.

Both of these cruises were non-refundable deposits. Maybe Princess thinks that you will be less likely to cancel? I'm really not sure how I got so lucky. I really think that my Aunt Martha is my lucky charm. She cruised with me in July and she's coming again in December. :D

Congrats!! That's the second one you've gotten so far this year, right?? That's awesome.

I am hoping for one for my cruise next month. I keep checking my email ... wishing and hoping. Do me a favor, keep your fingers crossed for me. And again ... happy cruising and congratulations on your upgrades.

Be careful what you wish for! We received an upgrade about a month ago for our September Coastal Cruise from a Caribe deck balcony to a mid ship Aloha balcony (right under the pool deck). I called within hours of the email being issued but they said our previous cabin was already occupied. We were able to move to an Emerald deck balcony which is a satisfactory location so all was not lost.

Enjoy your upgrade, Party Barbie!

Sorry, I'm not trying to brag. This almost never happens to me. To have it happen twice this year is nothing short of a miracle. My young dog became suddenly ill on Friday, and despite rushing her to the vet, on Saturday she passed away. I would gladly give up cruising for life to have her back. I guess I was thinking this was the one tiny bright spot in my day that I was given a free upgrade. Or maybe because I have cruised with Princess over 60 times, they are finally giving the upgrades to Elite members instead of just new cruisers and casino players.

Don't let someone rain on you like that. I don't think anyone is thinking you are bragging. I have two fur babies and my heart breaks for your loss. I, like you...would give up cruising for the rest of my life if I could keep my babies around forever!

Thank you. Normally I would just scroll past without a comment, but I'm not really myself at the moment.

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved pup. It's just heartbreaking and glad there was a bright spot in your day. Don't worry about the green monsters ... some of us just love hearing about you getting an upgrade.

I hear you loud and clear!! I did put in for a meta upgrade only ... always do! So, I wouldn't lose a good balcony for an icky one ... the only direction they can go is from OV to balcony. At least I will know what to expect ... even if that is an undesirable balcony.

We've cruised extensively on different lines but mostly on Princess. In over 2 dozen cruises on Princess, only have we been upgraded once and that was from an inside to an obstructed OV. It was actually a very nice upgrade!

We've gotten incredible upgrades on Celebrity, though, with only half the number of sailings on them ... not sure why on that line and not so much on Princess. Either way, we'll be on a cruise so will be happy in whatever cabin we end up with. Thanks for the concern, though. It is most appreciated!!

I’m on the same cruise. I’m in a guarantee OV. Hoping to get upgraded!! But if not I’m just happy I’m on a cruise.

So true!

I have an OV now and I really like my cabin choice. But I will put in for a low bid on a balcony, see what happens

I am sorry for the loss of your fur baby. I feel your pain. It’s tough to lose our fur babies. I was so sad when we lost our most recent baby. We now have two more wonderful Boston Terriers. But I miss my two chihuahuas.

A big thank you to both of you.

We have 2 rooms to Alaska next week. One room upgraded from balcony to mini suite and other room went from mini suite to suite!, yahooo

congrats Patti - sorry to hear about the loss of you pet, but the free upgrade to the suite should eaze some of your pain...

we have an elderly dog, also...and have dealt with the loss of a pet before...(yn)

Exactly how do you "put in a bid for a balcony"...

It seems that some of this thread is about upgrades and other comments are about upsells. An upgrade happens when the cruise line gives up a upgrade and no charge and usually you do not get to pick which cabin. An upsell is when the cruise line gives you the option of upgrading for a particular amount of money

which I am fully aware of how those work...;p

I'm asking specifically about how to put in a 'bid' for a balcony...

We pretty much share your attitude. In our twelve years of cruising with Princess we have only had one upgrade that we considered to be a "real" upgrade. We had booked an OV on Plaza Deck because we were curious about that location and when we arrived at the port we learned that we had been upgraded to a Handicapped Balcony room (which apparently no one needed). It was a great room and ten years later we have yet to try the OV Plaza Deck location. :')

Strange isn’t it as we’ve never got an upgrade on X, in fact, we’ve never got an upgrade anytime on any line .
