Weather in alaska

Recommended Posts

Alaska weather is mostly horrible.Cloudy chilly rainy , foggy and damp.

But...you just don't know and can't predict. Two Alaska cruises. First, sunny, almost hot, best weather they said in 5 years. Next cruise, same time of year, cloudy, chilly, drizzle, real Alaska weather. You just don't know.

Yep .We got lucky. Sunny and 75 plus at every port the week of the 4th of July. They said the week before had been horrible weather and week after bad too.

According to some staff, the weather the last couple of weeks has not been good.

I have seen some reports of excursions being canceled because it is not safe to be out on the glaciers.

I think that every week is different.

It is getting close to the end of the season so the weather may not be very good.

Your better weather is later in the season almost toward the end - - -

the Calm before the real winter storms - - -

BUT THEN - - -

Y M M V

Throwing darts at the revolving weatherman's dart board may get better scores.

You may have better odds in the Casino - but even that is closed while in port !

And another thing to blame on the Russkies !

One thing for sure Cruise lines stay away from Siberian weather fronts that is why

the cruise season is only from early May to late September unless you like the

Lindblad Explorer line or the Alaskan Maritime Ferry.

This place was named Seward's Folly for more than one reason ! LOL !

Remember Ketchikan's rain gauge. Average of 12.5 feet of rainfall a year. With 16 feet record.

wrt being out on the Glaciers, you have to get there. If the ceiling is low, floatplanes and helicopters can not operate. This year, we had rain in two of the four ports in June. Last year, 2 of the 4 ports had low ceiling and cancelled all flighttours. Glaciers were "safe", but the operators could not operate the aircraft with the low ceilings (none have pressurized cabins, so they are limited in altitude).

July 16-23 weather was sunny and warm in every port except Seward when we left it was a bit cloudy and had rained in the morning. Ketchikan was high 70's we were in short's all day, including the boat trip out to Misty Fjord. Hubbard Glacier I was fine with a t-shirt and jeans. Keep checking it on the web daily even then it's not a sure thing.

Been hearing there is flooding in Skagway? And nothing but rain at every port? And excursions are being cancelled? Anyone recently off cruise with first hand information on this?[/quo

We have been on three Alaska cruises. All three were in July and we had rain only once in all that time (total of 24 days, including one cruisetour).

That being said, time of year does matter but we always made sure to have clothing that would accommodate whatever weather we get.
