abridalmaven Posted August 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2018 We are on an RCCL Australian cruise next March. Now looking to book airfare. Just found out about Jetstar. I wonder if anyone has used them and if they recommend them at all. Most likely we will use them ( or another airline) from Hawaii as we want to break up the long flight from NY. Amaroo Andrew Posted August 15, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Use Hawaiian Airlines or Qantas if you want a decent baggage allowance. Baggage allowance on Jetstar is poor, but you can buy more if requested. ........ and you can buy food, drinks, blankets and entertainment etc etc. If you book Qantas make sure you're not on a code shared Jetstar flight. Jetstar flights are JQ and Qantas is QF.
Aus Traveller Posted August 15, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2018 We wouldn't recommend Jetstar. We refer to it as "One Star", although I am sure it is better than some airlines in the world. Jetstar is the budget arm of Qantas. If you want a full-service airline, book Qantas.
CoopColbie Posted August 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Jetstar's International services require you to buy a lot of add-ons - but from what I hear about airlines in USA, you are used to that. If it's an overnight flight, you probably don't need a meal or entertainment - just make sure you have enough luggage allocation. Their international services are usually on a Boeing Dreamliner, which are new planes and very comfortable - probably one of the advantages Jetstar has over Qantas in that regard. The_Big_M Posted August 16, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 16, 2018 Yeah, they're not the worst, and are tolerable, but they're not a full service carrier. All depends what you're looking for - if you just want the cheapest and don't mind paying for extras or going without, they're fine. But if you prefer a better experience then choose another out of HNL.

LC1950 Posted August 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 16, 2018 OP, you might like to check prices for Jetstar Business Class. https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/flights/business-class We flew them a couple of years ago Singapore to Melbourne after a cruise. The business class fare was cheaper than Singapore economy class at that time. We were fed, watered and even offered wine with dinner, all included in the fare price. Seat was comfortable - not lie flat of course - but I managed to get a couple of hours sleep on the overnight flight. The cabin crew were very attentive and professional. We left on time and arrived in Melbourne about 10 minutes early. All in all, good value for the money IMO.

Toryhere Posted August 16, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 16, 2018 Totally agree. Check the price of Jetstar business/premium economy. Yes, Jetstar Business isn’t too bad. You get decent leg room and a good luggage allowance. Last time I flew it to Phuket there was also lounge accesss.

bobhsv Posted August 16, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 16, 2018 (edited) We returned from Honolulu to Sydney with Jetstar a couple of months ago. We do fly (happily) domestic with Jetstar, but our flight onboard the new Dreamliner from HNL was awful. We were prepared to pay the extras for food (order online when booking or you may miss out), added more luggage etc, and did so. However the Dreamliner was the most uncomfortable and super squashed in flight we have ever experienced. Seems the aisle width is a lot less than in other aircraft. It put a new and more honest meaning to the wording 'cattle class'. Never ever again! We will choose Hawaiian or Qantas next time and pay the extra gladly. Just adding a tip for those flying out of HNL.....Before you enter the terminal doors, grab one of the porters for your luggage. You may have to wait one minute for them to return to this spot. For a total of US$5, they load up all your luggage, escort you in, skipping the line up, take you to a counter and you are immediately checked in. Very fast, cheap and no line up. Fabulous!! Most airlines, not just Jetstar, have deployed it in a high seating fitout to maximise revenue with the result it generally has the tightest seating of any major passenger aircraft. Rare mr walker Posted August 17, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 17, 2018 I have only flown JetStar domestically, you get what you pay for. Generally my experience also. Mostly no problems, & the actual flights and staff have always been fine, but, on our last trip, our Jetstar flight (SYD-BRS) was cancelled basically as we were at the gate, and we were delayed 7- 3/4 hours  Lucky it was a business trip & I had travelled a day early, as I had a meeting early next morning. That said, I have had flights cancelled or significantly delayed on QANTAS, Virgin and Jetstar, so you have to take the good with the bad. Usually there is beer available :D

We recently flew from Heathrow to Perth on a Qantas 787 Dreamliner. We had more space than usual. There were 9 seats across the aircraft instead of the usual 10 and we had more knee room than usual. The 10 seats across were horrible for a long haul, but the plane itself was nice and staff were great.:) At the end of the day, the fares were cheap. Like others have said, you get what you pay for. Most have switched to squeezing 9 seats across now. There is no configuration with 10 seats across. Qantas do give more knee room (1" extra) compared to their other economy fitouts though. However, the Qantas fitout is still 2" more knee room than Jetstar, and also .2" wider than Jetstar.

Internationally, I have only my brother's review of a NZ flight - 3 hours, and he chose to change his flight on the way back (for a fee) to a Qantas share flight that was a Qantas plane. Apparently the entertainment, meal, etc was worth it.

We were happy with the plane for our flight, but the cabin stewards in our area weren't up to Qantas' usual high standard. :p
sailco Posted August 17, 2018 #20 Share Posted August 17, 2018 We've flown Hawaiian to the States via a stopover in Honolulu numerous times. Love the relaxed vibe and excellent inflight meals and service. The flight from Sydney to Honolulu or return is overnight and no jet lag if you make the stop. Best of all, as international travellers we get 2 x 30 kgs checked baggage each including on any partner flights within America and Canada. :D
The_Big_M Posted August 17, 2018 #21 Share Posted August 17, 2018 It doesn't sound like much but some people are very happy with an extra 2''. Plus when you're sitting in that state for 10 hours, the extra space (or loss of it) is more noticeable. But you can see from Jetstar's perspective that 2" every 15 rows means they can squeeze another passenger row in, so 9 x extra revenue.
Beanb41 Posted August 18, 2018 #22 Share Posted August 18, 2018 We have travelled international on Jetstar once and that was from Melbourne to Phuket. The aircraft was a 787 Dreamliner. We purchased row 10 which gave us extra legroom but row 11 had none . Row 10 and 11 are normally one row of business class but extra made it two economy class. We pre-purchased our food at the airport prior to boarding. We didn't bring hot food. We also pre-purchased water at the airport after passing through security. For $10 we did buy the entertainment package. Even for the limited movies on offer it was worth it for a long haul flight. Baggage allowance on Jetstar is pitiful and expensive to buy extra. The cost increases if you have to buy extra at the airport checkin. This is a budget airline in every way. We chose this flight because of the ridiculous up front airfares on offer at the time.
