Rare PTC DAWG Posted September 11, 2018 #376 Share Posted September 11, 2018 Flo was headed straight for Bermuda Sat PM-Sun AM. A decision had to be made...I wish hurricanes were totally predictable, but they are not.
Shidah Posted September 11, 2018 #377 Share Posted September 11, 2018 Not being able to tender to GSC happens all the time, hurricane or no hurricane. I’m 1 for 3 so far on making it. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, since it is a good time.
JustaOreo Posted September 11, 2018 #378 Share Posted September 11, 2018 Someone posted that speculation here and some are now repeating it as fact but I doubt that Bermuda shut down the port. Can you point to some place you read that other than someone speculating in this thread? The Royal Gazette reported that other vessels docked in Bermuda, and their article sounded somewhat snarky about the diversion decision by the cruise lines. The only effects of the hurricane have been some rip tides on the south shore beaches. Also the head of tourism did not sound pleased about the diversions in comments he made on social media. It would have been a great week to fly to Bermuda as the cruise ship crowds would not be there. Charles The Royal Gazette dated today -Sept 11th-as an aside in an article titled Premature round-trip for cruise passenger by Owain Johnston -Barnes......Shipping agent Meyer Agencies says six cruise ships decided to go elsewhere. The National Hurricane Center-ours- says -Bermuda is expected to escape the storms winds, but marine conditions are expected to remain dangerous. david_sobe Posted September 11, 2018 #379 Share Posted September 11, 2018 i am interested and not trying to defend ncl but on cruises from nyc to bermuda when they get disrupted because of a hurricane where do you want to go? If all the cruises out of bermuda were canceled where did rccl send their ships? Really a no win for the cruise lines. Had they gone to bermuda and got caught in rough seas returning people would be unhappy. Charles4515 Posted September 12, 2018 #383 Share Posted September 12, 2018 No way RCI Grandeur of the Seas will be returning as scheduled from their five day with Florence’s track. That will also screw up their next sailing. They should have gone to Canada or Bermuda. Time will tell if Escape will be delayed too.
Rare BirdTravels Posted September 12, 2018 #384 Share Posted September 12, 2018 (edited) No way RCI Grandeur of the Seas will be returning as scheduled from their five day with Florence’s track. That will also screw up their next sailing. They should have gone to Canada or Bermuda. Time will tell if Escape will be delayed too. Grandeur is going to go to Port Canaveral to wait out the storm. They ship will be 2 days late back to Baltimore and the next cruise will be delayed. The bigger question is whether the storm will move inland fast enough to let the Escape get back home. Earlier today, the US model had the storm stalling off shore before moving inland which could be problematic. The Pride of America was suppose to be in Hilo today. The POA was rerouted to Kauai today for a single day (instead of an overnight) and it'll probably spend the day at sea tomorrow avoiding Oliva, then try to get to Hilo and Kona on Thursday and Friday. Earlier today, the US model had the storm stalling off shore before moving inland which could be problematic. That is the right thing to do. Since the Grandeur passengers were given the opportunity to cancel in advance there should be no complaints. Some will be happy about the longer cruise. Those on the next sailing will be disappointed but I suspect that RCI will continue to be smart in business and offer those passengers the opportunity to cancel or a good deal to stay with the revised itinerary. JenTX4NYC Posted September 12, 2018 #386 Share Posted September 12, 2018 The models seem to be changing with every NHC update. NCL will keep the Escape passengers safe, but they might be on the ship a little longer than they planned....

Looking at the port of Bermuda webcam they would have been fine in Bermuda today. They have been having good weather there. No waves at all at the Dockyard. That doesn’t mean that NCL made the wrong decision when they made it. Hurricanes can be unpredictable and this one certainly was. There can always be second guessing in hindsight when dealing with storms. Edited September 12, 2018 by Charles4515

Hurricanes can be unpredictable and this one certainly was. Yeah, a zoomed in look on windy.com shows how the waves are hitting the southern side of Bermuda because of the rotation of the storm and that is creating a nice little pocket of calm seas to the north of the island. And winds look to only be in the 15-20 mph range judging by their color coding?
davy jones Posted September 12, 2018 #393 Share Posted September 12, 2018 It's a no win situation for the cruise lines. Whatever they decide, they will be berated by some for exercising caution and berated by others for being indifferent to safety. Having sailed through a hurricane, if there is an error, I prefer the decision to be on the side of caution.

Letsgo 2 Posted September 12, 2018 #395 Share Posted September 12, 2018 we have ( friends on the Eccape right now, we have been in contact with them since they left NYC, they had some rough seas leaving NYC( somebody else reported on that not our friends) and after that it has been smooth sailing, they send us pic and it looked like the Atlantic was a lake. Right now they are all enjoying a beautiful day at GSC .if you hear other reports I'm sorry to say but they are "Drama Queens" all is well on the Escape and I have total faith that the Captain will keep everyone safe . Formula280SS Posted September 12, 2018 Author #396 Share Posted September 12, 2018 Escape made national news today with its arrival yesterday in PC. Formula - were you the guy they interviewed? He was in a good mood and happy to be on a cruise. Nope, never left the ship. Weather was awesome. AT GREAT STIRRUP CAY, and ABSOLUTELY PERFECT WEATHER, MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES AND NOT A NOTICEABLE WAVE. Calm as it could possibly be. Will check out the island later, but the weather and waves are PERFECT for all of the activities. Heading up to the water slides now as most have gone to shore and we can ride at will with no lines. Opens at 11AM, ropes DO NOT OPEN until 6PM. As with MOST CRUISE LINES, port days have such reduced attractions and dining that are even open and it's a trend we're adjusting too. Looks like Florence is going to be historic in a very bad way. Good luck to all those, and those with family or friends, in the affected areas where she hits; TAKE CARE.
Letsgo 2 Posted September 12, 2018 #397 Share Posted September 12, 2018 ok everybody here is a great solution do not book during Hurricane( kidding) if you do, go with the flow and know that your plans may change at a moments notice, all part of cruising, and it happens every year ,some just deal with that fact better then others ..ok no I'm ready for the beat down lol Marion
