Dress code enforcement.

I am on QM2 now and thought you might be interested in in this.

We were in the chart room last night. It was a gala night so everyone was dressed up to the nines. A man walked in looking like he had just come off a building site. The bar staff refused to serve him. He left looking very unhappy. It made us happy though.

Very surprised because we were on QM2 roundtrip TA 18/10-1/11 and there were some not many who were in first sitting MDR on formal nights not even wearing a jacket and number of times saw men walking around the ship in the evening after 6pm wearing shorts.

That would make me happy too!  Well done, Chart Room bar staff.  On our crossing, as we entered the Britannia for dinner on a non-formal evening, there was a lady talking to the Maitre'd.  He was full of apologies that the five jackets they keep handy had already been loaned out.

On one evening in August I was in the Commodore lounge with several friends, enjoying some drinks and conversation prior to the late dinner sitting.

The 6pm threshold came and went, and we were still ensconced, dressed nicely but not in black tie. The server came to refresh our drinks about 6:10, and discretely mentioned that after 6pm the dress code came into effect.  We asked if we were being kicked out and he responded "oh no, sir and you are welcome to stay ... I am merely providing a reminder."

I thought that was a very appropriate and professional manner of addressing the situation ... respectful of both the rules and of the customers. Obviously there was no need to alienate a highly desirable group of patrons by giving them the bum's rush at the tick of a clock, yet relying on their own sense of decorum not to abuse the privilege.

By 6:30 all had headed off to dress for dinner.

How did you decide that you were “ highly desirable patrons”?    I would agree that this was a kind way of letting your group know it was time to dress for the evening.   Always found the Commodore Club to be one of the best and most elegant.    One cruise our cabin was next door to the conference room, easy to change for the evening.   Are there bars where you can get a drink even if you decide to do the buffet for dinner?

Carinthia Lounge on QM2 or Winter Garden on the Vista class ships.

From the Cunard website -

Of course, if you prefer to spend your evenings in more relaxed attire, feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Kings Court or Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, Casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden/Winter Lounge and G32 or Yacht Club. Non-ripped jeans are appropriate, but please refrain from wearing shorts, sports attire, swim wear or sleeveless t-shirts outside of the gym, spa and deck spaces.

Ya, I thought that “highly desirable patrons” line was pretty funny!

Good to know the rules are being enforced. When my wife and I were on the QM2 world cruise earlier this year a man arrived in the theatre and sat next to us.He was wearing hobnail boots, jeans,a t shirt,a baseball hat and a scarf. He looked as if he had just come up from the engine room. When my wife asked the Cunard lady on the theatre door why he had been admitted she said " we didn't see him " !!!!!!!  If you believe that you will believe anything.Incidentally it happened when the ship reached Australian waters and one of the bar waiters told us unofficially they had been told to be a little lenient as the Australians spend lots of money in the bars

Yes that does sound immodest, doesn't it. Not intended that way.
I simply meant that this group of gents was in the lounge every day consuming quite liberal quantities of pricey libations with suitably generous gratuities. Always polite and personable, and dressed elegantly even when not yet suited up in the dress of the evening. Some but not all were quite wealthy and occupying a variety of staterooms from steerage to the Grills.

I should clarify that I do not consider myself to be a member of the coveted demographic, but I was graciously invited to join in the fun.
And as I say, a skilled server can ensure standards are maintained discretely and without causing any fuss or embarrassment.

VintageCCG,  I understood you comment completely.  As a former bartender during my college years in NYC, I can attest that money speaks its own language -- particularly in the dialect of "gratuity." You received a very classy reminder and it clearly was well-received among your group.  Now that I've been on the other side for about three decades and have acquired an affinity for 25 yr old Macallan, I find there is a certain greater appreciation shown by staff when I'm in black or white tie that when I pop into the Commodore Lounge after having lounged in a deck chair for an hour or so, appropriately bundled for late October in the North Atlantic.
