Muster Drill

Um we have now been on 7 cruises and it seems thank god that its now indoors. No more running around the ship with the life vest. The last 3 we have been on its at your muster drill station, usually the theater or main dinning rooms. You then get 20 minutes or so of instructions. I believe the captain talks directly to the passengers through the PA. They tell you what the emergency beeps mean. Its quite better than when we used to stand out of the decks with the life vests.

I’ve been cruising Royal since 2008, never had to have my life vest. Anyway, as others have noted, it depends on ship and stateroom location. I just got off Liberty last week, it was my 3rd time on that ship but only the first time my muster station was indoors. There were still plenty of passengers heading outdoors and my previous two were outdoors too.

Still have to stand outdoors on many older ships. The newer ships are designed and built so the muster stations are indoors. It would be hard to change the original design so they usually don't unless it can be done easily.  Also they would have to change all the signage. Last year Jewel of the Seas was outdoors.  If they ever change it that would probably be after a major redo. Life vests are not affected by that. Don't have to take life vests anymore indoors or outdoors.

Ah that must be why. Last two cruises were on very new to brand new ships, Anthem and NCL Breakaway. Both were indoors and so much better. Next cruise is on Anthem and then plan to do Oasis from NJ so hopefully that will be indoors too. Thanks for the info, I did not know it went by the age of the ship or how it was designed.

Oasis is mostly inside, though there are a few muster stations at the Aquatheater.

Which for all intents and purposes is inside. There are seats at the Aquatheater. It is not like standing outside lined up in rows under the lifeboats.

Except when it's unbearably hot and humid out there with no shade.

A couple of weeks ago on LB, our entire muster drill outside lasted maybe 10 minutes! Captain James and the CD made very few remarks. What a relief after the inside muster drills on X,  watching ( or not being able to see) a very stupid movie and being cooped up for 30-40 minutes in a hot, crowded room.

On NCL Breakaway my muster station was indoors in the casino which stunk. They even had to tell someone to stop smoking during the drill.

Well, the casino is the smoking lounge after all.:classic_rolleyes:

On Oasis/Quantum class ships, the assembly stations are inside (with the exception of the AquaTheater).  On those ships, the assembly stations all have video capability, so you're forced to enjoy "Wash Your Hands" (and now it's in your head) and "Operation Little Bear" (which has VERY little to do with safety and is pretty stupid).

On the rest of the ships, the majority of the assembly stations are outside, near the lifeboats.  I've been in a few drills where they're in the smaller show lounge (not the theater) or dining room, depending on your cabin location.  Those ships do not have the ability to show the video, so it's the safety information from the Cruise Director, followed by a brief announcement from the Captain.  Luckily, they seem to get a lot of the mundane announcements out of the way during the 15 minute prior announcement, so the actual drill is pretty short once it starts.

As stated before, a vast majority of the holdup is getting people to their assembly stations.  Many, many, many think the rules don't apply to them so they just ignore the announcements.
