Parking at Manhattan terminal

[Cruise Dream Love]

Just booked the Jan 9, 2019 NCL Escape leaving from the Manhattan terminal. I saw that the fee is $40 per day (max of $400) for my 14 night cruise. I know that in the scheme of NYC, $40 for a 24 hour period isnt bad but it sure adds up. I am wondering if there are any other less expensive options. Coming in from CT. I prefer not to take the train in with my suitcases.

 

I searched and didn't find anything relevant.

I think there is a garage nearby that is a little cheaper, but in all honesty, by the time you add in the extra hassles, its not worth it.

I totally agree.  Parking at the pier is secure, and it's incredibly convenient when you disembark and can just get in your car and drive home.  Just consider it part of the expense of the cruise (like travel insurance).

Where are you coming from in CT? Amtrak to Penn Station would give you access to redcap porters to more easily get off the train platform to a cab.

Parking at the terminal is the best option...not inexpensive but the safest and most convenient.

I am in agreement that the $400 is worth it mostly for convenience. There are garages nearby within a few blocks, from what I have heard, this may run you around $280, but you need to go to the garage, I believe they will drive with you to the pier to drop off yourselves and luggage then they will return to the garage and park it for you; on your return, someone in your party will need to go to the garage, retrieve the vehicle, and return to pick everyone up and their luggage, which considering this is a 14 day cruise you will have plenty of and it will not be light.

Throw in potential January weather... Oiy...

For that extra $120 in savings, by the time you go through customs, you will be at your vehicle within 5 mins.

No it is not cheap, but at a $400 max, you are in theory paying $28/day, that is not bad at all.

Park at the pier, I don’t if the cheaper garage puts a cap on parking like they do at the manhattan cruise terminal. It seems like a lot, but we pay $50 a day when we park our minivan in manhattan for a few hours.

Train, as suggested above, is the best alternative to save money.  Or bus.  From the train or bus station a cab is likely to be under $25 to the pier

Parking in Manhattan is expensive, like any other big city, even without a SUV or minivan surcharge of $10 to $20 a day extra on top of the base rate, city parking tax is almost 19%. That flat rate of $40 has not gone up in 3 or 4 years and all inclusive, no surprises and secured, outdoor fenced in & gated.

Parked at a municipal metered parking space this week in Manhattan near E. 14th Street for an urgent medical "escort" for someone, $4 for 1 hour and $10.75 for 2 hours (max).  The nearest "commercial" parking lot is 3 blocks away @ $27 for the 1st. hour. 
 

Given a choice, I rather take the subway, train or express bus into the "city" but not always practical and/or good use of time & resources ... Just ditched & replaced our "aging" SUV with AWD and switched back to a fuel-efficient mid/full-sized 4 door sedan.

I'd  take the train, either Metronorth to Grand Central or Amtrack to Penn Station.  Hopefully, a friend or relative can take you to a train station and a cab from either station in the city will be about $15 to the pier and cabs are easy to get at either.  Depending where you are in CT, train and cabs R/T will probably be less than $100 for 2 people.

From your history, it seems like you're in Redding... so really the best answer is Metro-North here. If Danbury branch trains are a bridge too far, get a friend (or Uber) to take you to Katonah or South Norwalk (there's long-term parking at South Norwalk but it's limited to five days max, or at least it was a few years ago when I used to park there long-term; Katonah is a pain and a half for parking) for more frequent trains. The fare will be about $12 each way to Grand Central. Then just a straight shot cab to the port.

 

It will be more of a pain than just parking at the port but you'll save about $300. Your choice.
