Let's see, you are listed as having just 56 posts on CC and all that are available by searching (over 1/3 of them) are devoted to this thread. Many of your suggestions like "find another deck to walk on" or "avoid walking through the casino" are not realistic options on many ships. Suggest you find another thread/subject for your trolling.

So I'm the bad guy on all about smoking on Holland by adding my two cents in as a smoker. Really seems that this thread is all about poor me I can't stand nasty smokers. " Find another deck to walk" on is realistic. Most elevators go to all floors on the forward, mid and aft of a ship, at least all that I have been on. I find that when a group of anti-smokers get an opportunity to vent we hear all the doom and gloom about second hand smoke killing off the World population. Come on folks, get realistic, my smoke really doesn't hurt anyone but myself. Now if you were really serious about smoking on the ships you wouldn't be gossiping on this post. You can complain to the Cruise Lines about smoking as I do about more area to smoke or simply chose not to go on a particular ship. I always check the smoking areas before I book. If I don't like it I don't go on that particular ship. We all have choices! Now go hug a tree and you might feel better.

We are going on our first transatlantic cruise on HAL Veendam the end of August and I wanted to know what the smoking accommodation is like. I know they have a certain side of the ship outdoors but crossing the Atlantic sounds like outside on the deck may be rough. I'm curious if anything changes.

Thanks In advance

Craig

I have the same question. Looks like we will be on the same cruise. The “sports deck forward and aft of crows nest” isn’t terribly informative. Is their seating? Is the area protected from the elements?

Please let me know if you have learned any more.

We avoid smoking casinos as well. I wonder if HAL has studied casino revenues for smoking and non-smoking venues?

My two cents, the casino and cruise line benefit from people who gamble a lot, it is those people who have addictive personalities who gamble a lot, could also smoke a lot and drink a lot as well.  A win, win for the casino and cruise line.  Saves me money as I won’t go into the casino if there is smoking, but then again I limit myself for one day only per cruise to $20.00 for the slots and that’s it, so really I am not the type of customer they are looking for.

Having just sailed on the Noordam (July 21), I was surprised, every time we walked through the casino I failed to see or smell any cigarette smokers. We never use the casino but when leaving the show lounge you have to go through the casino to get to other places on the ship. Once while on our balcony I did smell cigarettes' smoke but I couldn't determine who the culprit was to make any report.

(underling added)

That's not true on the Noordam---nor any of the Vista and Signature class ships. There are three levels of the show lounge, and all have exits.
The casino is easily avoided if you don't want to pass through it.

Hi Guys

Hi guys, I'm on the same cruise too .. The primary smoking area on the Veendam  with the best amenities is the area just aft of the buffet on Lido starboard side , it's covered and has plenty of tables and chairs.

The area just out side the Crow's Nest on the sport's deck is just a smoking area with a ash tray type box on the wall and is more or less out in the elements with no cover. (lots of crew use this spot to pop in for a quick puff)

Lastly the if actually play the slots, there is a smoking section in a part of the casino for slot players players, except the few non-smoking nights sprinkled thru the cruise (usually the 2 or 3 formal nights)

Hope this helps

Thanks so much Srpilo! This is more or less what I was expecting and hoping for. This was the exact setup on the Zuiderdam when we were on her back in January. The description quoted by so many makes no mention of the Lido.

I am much relieved and appreciate your clear response.

Hi Avian. I’m posting in the Single Smoking Thread now, as I was yesterday when I asked my question. One of us is lost....pretty sure it’s not me.

Then the threads were merged. Finally.

I have a question that may have been answered in these 12 pages somewhere so I apologize if I’m repeating.

what happens when the outer decks are closed due to bad weather? Do we have any recourse or are we expected to do without? For anyone who hasn’t been on the Koningsdam, it has a great smoking area on the aft lido. Anyone have details about Zuiderdam?

Thanks for any help.

If you are at sea, and the ship has smoking in the Casino (or it's a 'smoking day' in the casinos that switch), you can go there. On the Noordam, you can go to the smoking room (Oak Room); I believe it's still in force on that ship.
Otherwise, sadly, yes, you may have to suffer through.

I think I heard that on one ship, at least once when the outside decks were closed, smokers were allowed to use the outside Lido Deck smoking area, because it was close to the doors to inside, and was fairly well sheltered.
But I can't swear that is always done, or even if I am remembering correctly. Sorry.

If it is possible, it might have to do with just how wild and dangerous the seas are, and from what direction.

We are wary about motion sickness and bring bonine and ginger on cruises.  Have you considered nicotine gum/Patches?

Sure I’ve considered patches and will have some but according to my doctor they deliver a fraction of the nicotine in a cigarette. My traveling companion may not be too happy with me and I’m sure there will be some cheating going on but it won’t be me! I’ll just hope it doesn’t happen.

I don't know about Canada, but I once saw an ad for multiple nicotine dosage patches.  It was aimed at smokers tapering down and quitting.

Hi Tom,

We do have the same thing and I have the highest dose. At worst I’ll be cranky and at best it won’t happen. Thanks

Hi Sheila,

i bought a simple Vape device (juul) specifically for this reason. It’s very helpful in a pinch and it’s allowed in your stateroom.
