I know this isn’t Celebrity cruise related but wanted to share as our next big vacation will be on a Celebrity cruise.

Hi everyone.

 

 Just wanted to share an experience, not cruising, but from our recent all inclusive vacation in Mexico

 

Mid way through the week, I injured my foot.  Wasn’t looking where I was going and tripped.  As it was able to walk on it I thought it was just a bad bruise or maybe a crack.  So decided to just take it easy for the rest of the week and lounge around the pool and have it looked at when I get home.

 

So when we got home yesterday I drove myself to the hospital with no issues (it’s my right foot) thinking I’m wasting their time as it is likely bad bruising.  Only to find out I broke the 5th metatarsal (bigger bone on the baby toe side).  

 

Had to call my hubby come down and get me and the car as I shouldn’t be driving.  Now have an air cast and an appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon on Monday at the cast clinic.  I have an air cast for now, but may need surgery as I waited to have it looked at.  We have travel medical insurance and I should have used it,  may have prevented the possible need for surgery as I walked on my foot for four days.  While I didn’t walk around much, may have done more damage.

 

So so my point is, have travel medical and use it if you need to!

I can empathize with you! On December 26 I tripped at home and broke 4 toes (all but the big one) on my left foot and just about ripped off my little toe. I was put into a splint cast and stitched up until seeing the orthopedic surgeon, and used a knee scooter instead of crutches from the beginning. Saw the orthopedic surgeon on the 9th and after he reviewed new x-rays, I luckily will not need surgery. The little toe’s stitches were removed at the same visit. I had the cast removed and replaced with one of those large boots and can still not bear any weight on that foot. I was told that it typically takes 6-8 weeks for the bones to heal, so that shouldn’t interfere with our cruise on the Reflection on April 1. If it does, I’ll have to see whether my trip insurance would cover a cancellation when there are options to navigate with medical equipment assistance. 

 

I hope that you find out that surgery will not be necessary. I was told that since the little toe (my most injured one of the four) bears the least weight on the foot,, and because of that it isn’t as serious as if the big toe had been broken. Therefore, along with the other toes, they are just letting it heal instead of operating. Best of luck with your appointment on Monday and wishes for a speedy recovery!

Wishing you a speedy recovery!  My friend's husband broke all five of his metatarsals before Thanksgiving, and didn't need surgery, so there's hope!  He had his foot looked at and x-rayed that day, but they didn't even put him in a cast, they waited a few more days for an MRI to see if surgery was necessary.  He used a knee scooter for several weeks and is now in a boot.

I am six weeks post-surgery for complications after stress fractures of the second and third metatarsals, so I sympathize with you.  Three weeks bed rest in a cast after surgery, three weeks in a boot, and yesterday finally into a sneaker and started PT.  It hurts!  LOL.
