zdad59 Posted January 20, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) My niece is on NCL Bliss as we speak. It sailed away at 4:30 today. I got a text from her an hour later saying they were stopped in the water and a Port of Miami fire boat pulled along side, offloading EMS or Police. She followed up a few minutes saying the authorities disembarked with a passenger in handcuffs. Bliss was underway immediately thereafter. She had no further details. Makes me crazy curious. Stowaway?? Contraband?? Somebody wearing a Carnival shirt?? I've seen people taken away in cuffs from a ship before, but never heard of it happening less than an hour into the sailing. DCP Posted January 20, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 20, 2019 Is she sure that is what she saw? There are always the pilot boats that off load the pilot after getting the ship out of the ports. We see them do that every cruise. Maybe she saw that and just thought it was someone in handcuffs?
Rare shof515 Posted January 20, 2019 #5 Share Posted January 20, 2019 right around the ship is ready to leave port, the ship has to submit the manifest of who is onboard to customs and other port officials. most likely this person did something that cause alarms to go off and it was easier to get them off the ship before the ship visited any other ports
don't-use-real-name Posted January 20, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2019 Fire EMS Coast Guard boats do not act as taxis for Pilots - they have their own service. And another thing the pilots transfer from ship to boat while in motion - there is no slowing or stoppage. So something more sinister has happen - something beyond Captain's mast punishment ! Were handcuffs actually seen ? Awaiting for all the marine news faux or otherwise - the Paul Harvey the rest of the story ! LOL !

Could have been. She is a seasoned cruiser though, and a TV news person, so I want to think she could tell the difference.
sheffield Posted January 20, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 20, 2019 We are on the Seaside and left port after the Bliss but pretty soon caught up with her. She was stationary in the water for quite a while. We left her behind. We wondered what had happened.

Rare Laszlo Posted January 20, 2019 #11 Share Posted January 20, 2019 I was on the Escape 3 years ago out of Miami. We were about 30 minutes late leaving, then we found out why. Have of a large wedding party had been kicked off the ship for being drunk and fighting. Their must have been half a dozen people in handcuffs being escorted off the ship
BarnCat1 Posted January 20, 2019 #12 Share Posted January 20, 2019 Could that be the Bliss w/ the other boat alongside it yesterday? I was watching my brother leave Ft Lauderdale yesterday on the webcam and saw a few other cruise ships in the distance.

I hope it didn't spoil too much of the bride and groom's special trip/occasion, AND that they hadn't paid the bill for any of those guests. Sheeesh. GUEST71919 Posted January 21, 2019 #14 Share Posted January 21, 2019 I’m betting it was the Carnival T-shirt issue, just can’t have those roustabouts hanging around 🤦🏼♀️😂 😛
DCP Posted January 21, 2019 #15 Share Posted January 21, 2019 I am aware that the EMS don't do escorts for the pilots, I was just wondering if the person was someone that knew this took place. I missed the part where the ship was stationary in the water when the transfer took place. I noticed the last time we were on the Getaway, there was a Coast Guard boat with a 50 Cal. that escorted us until we were past the south beach area and into open water. Glad they're keeping an eye out for anyone who may be trouble!
CoupleUK Posted January 22, 2019 #16 Share Posted January 22, 2019 We were on seaside as it passed the stationery Bliss. The thing we noticed was a total lack of any lights from cabins - none. The top deck and other deck lighting were on but not even a balcony light. So we thought perhaps a partial power loss.
crystalaziza Posted January 29, 2019 #17 Share Posted January 29, 2019 A cruise ship is a miniature piece of land, so I'm not surprised something happens from time to time. I just got off the Gem in LA on 1/27 waiting to disembark & customs & the ships security took off a lady in handcuffs. "Yes" I saw the handcuffs, she walked right in front of me & didn't look very happy. My sister said she talked to a lady that said the lady in cuffs was on her floor a few cabins down, but can't remember what the issue was. Then on the Getaway last year, we were late leaving port, but saw two men being escorted off in handcuffs. Come to find out in the cabin next to us the two men had tons of wads of money on the beds & were up in the bathroom smoking pot. The room attendant knocked on the door, they pulled her inside by her arm and offered to pay her off to be quiet. She was able to pull free and reported it. In case anyone is wondering, "yes" it is 100% true. How they smuggled the pot on board is beyond me, but they had their vacation locked up. joseph07081 Posted January 29, 2019 #18 Share Posted January 29, 2019 (edited) We just returned from this cruise. The official word from the captain was that a passenger had a medical emergency. We were only given this news the next day. One additional item item to add. A few days later we heard of an incident where someone tried to put a table or chair through one of the windows on the Observation Deck. My wife saw the window, but I did not. I don’t know if it is related or not. Edited January 29, 2019 by joseph07081 Additional comment
Hrhbob Posted January 29, 2019 #19 Share Posted January 29, 2019 I too was on that cruise, and at the CC Meet and Mingle we were told it was a medical emergency and a passenger was off loaded. We watched the small craft approach the Bliss from our aft balcony while we were stopped. Did not take long for the ship to get underway again.
