Finally Friday! And the penguins and whale pics!  Thank you, what a wonder to seen them in such a remote and beautiful area.  I am still thinking about penguins and how they move about and wondering about that cliff.

Are all gangplanks at Santiago non-covered?   Or did the Zaandam just "luck out."  In Quebec City, we had an uncovered gangplank and embarked in a tent because the regular spot was already taken.

None of the gangways were covered in South America . The closest thing was this inclined ramp that was attached to the ship in Puerto Madryn .

Be aware that next summer season [20/21] will probably be Zaandam & other large cruise ships last in the Antarctic area south of  60 deg. South - due to new Ice Class rules that are now in force.

The new rules come fully into effect on 1st January 2022, but most vessels certificates will run out before then & this stops them operating right up to the deadline.

The same applies to Greenland as it is north of 60N, but Iceland & Norwegian coast are exempt due to Gulf Stream.

I don't understand this.  What's the problem w/ Greenland, and what does the Gulf Stream have to do with it?  Is it a climate change issue.   Is Prince Christian Sund below 60N?

We saw a couple of Gerlache orcas near the ship

Gerlache orcas, named for the Gerlache Strait of the Antarctic Peninsula where they are most often found, are smaller than Type A and Pack Ice orcas.  They also may appear brown or yellowish because of diatoms and have a cape of pale color.  Their preferred diet is unknown, but they have been seen feeding on penguins and are usually spotted around penguin colonies.

Small Type B Antarctic orca

We finished the evening photographing a couple of old friends .

knittinggirl - Please refer to :-

HAL boards - Voyage of the Vikings 2020 by PCruzer Oct. 5th 2018.

Princess boards - Sail to Greenland from NYC by BarbinMich - last Tues. March 12th 2019 see my post #15.

Greenland is all North of 60 degrees North & in the new Polar Zone as per the IMO Polar Code. See above posts.

The Gulf Stream does not just flow past Florida - it contiues north & keeps Iceland, Norwegian Coast, Russian White Sea coast & UK free of ice.

Interesting pic - third from the top. It appears to be lines “carved” into the side of the snow/glacier.

It was amazing to see the snow , ice , glaciers and icebergs . Like snowflakes they all seemed to be unique .
