EMOSEA Posted August 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2019 Hubby and I did a silly thing almost six years ago and got married one day before his birthday, so we usually like to take a trip to celebrate both at once. However, I would like to do something a little extra for him for his birthday on the second day of our cruise (sea day) and wondering if anyone has some suggestions. I don't think he'd appreciate the birthday decorations package that Carnival sells. What have you done for your significant other for their birthday on board? I just had to reply to your post because... 10 years ago, my hubby and I got married the day before his birthday too! We hadn't initially planned to do so, but it was the way it ended up working out. I even asked him if he'd rather plan it for a different time frame (I know how people who have birthdays near Christmas, for example, end up feeling gypped), but he was fine with it and still is. We just celebrate both at the same time and I get him 2 gifts. When we cruised for our anniversary/his birthday quite a few years back, I surprised him with a cabin upgrade as one of his gifts.

I love it! We also didn't plan it that way, we just decided to elope one weekend (the eloping was planned but the date was not) and it happened to be that weekend, lol. I did actually accept a cabin upgrade for $78 that I haven't told him about yet (just from a oceanview to a better oceanview that's bigger and with a bathtub). AHS123 Posted August 10, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2019 I take this island girl ensemble from the partycheap store, packs easily and weighs practically nothing. The Carnival decorations are expensive as are most of their packages. We lose less in the Carnival casino because we stay in that night.

I've been thinking on this, and I think this is something he would like, but I have two hesitations. 1. We're cruising with some friends this time and we probably want to do "formal" night dinner together that evening. 2. (a totally selfish reason) I'm not sure there is anything I can eat in the steakhouse that would make it worth paying the $38 for me (vegetarian and allergic to wheat). But, I would do it for him if it wasn't for #1. He likes sushi, so maybe I can take him to lunch at the a la carte sushi restaurant for lunch that day. And everything I know he likes. I booked a surprise (10-Day Celebrity) cruise for my DH's 30th birthday, about 10 years ago. Just the two of us. His birthday fell on a Port Day (Coco Cay), not a Sea Day, though. But there was plenty of onboard time on his actual birthday as well as onshore time. All shore excursions on that cruise were chosen (secretly because he didn't even know we were going on a cruise) with him in mind - no consideration other than which one would he enjoy most. And most of our onboard time was him-centric, as well. He really enjoyed that cruise. Next year, totally coincidentally, the whole family will be on a cruise for his 40th birthday. He'll be deep sea fishing at our port stop on his actual birthday. Fishing is one of his favourite things in life. We're also doing the Chef's Table to celebrate his birthday (on whatever day Carnival happens to schedule it). And I'm sure I'll be doing little things here and there with him in mind throughout the day and the whole cruise, to make it more enjoyable for him. Just think of what he would most like of the various options for your onboard activities throughout the day, and I'm sure you'll make it a wonderful birthday for him. Good luck!
VentureMan_2000 Posted August 10, 2019 #11 Share Posted August 10, 2019 Yeah... $38 plus Tip is pricy... and certainly not worth it for a vegetarian. What makes the steakhouse so good is that they only serve "Prime" cuts of beef ( as opposed to "Select" and "Choice" cuts ), which is the best you can get... and that they cook it over a flame. I'm strongly considering the steakhouse for our cruise to Hawaii next year... my Lovely Bride will be turning 60 on that cruise, which would be a nice Birthday for her... besides the cruise.
EMOSEA Posted August 11, 2019 Author #12 Share Posted August 11, 2019 (edited) Thank you for suggestions! I'm thinking that after morning activities (coffee, breakfast, etc), maybe hit the hot tub, then I'll take him to Bonsai (he loves sushi), and have a massage booked for afternoon. Maybe we can go to the Piano Bar after dinner (he's a big fan of music), and possibly order something cute to wear for bed (nsfw?). Does that sounds like a good birthday plan? luvtrips Posted August 11, 2019 #14 Share Posted August 11, 2019 My husband and I got married ON his birthday! Our 1st cruise was our honeymoon, 15 years ago. We cruise every year for our anniversary/ slash his birthday. I always book the steakhouse for that night. He usually gets us a bottle of champagne, or we bring one onboard for just that night. Last year, we were in the port of San Juan on our date, so we had lunch and drinks at a nice rooftop restaurant. We do something special each year, but his favorite is the steakhouse.

But I'll ask: does he like massages? I booked on for Bob many years ago - not on a cruise - and he didn't care for it. And I adore your 'wardrobe' idea 🙂

At the risk of sounding miserable or upsetting folk on here........give your husband the ideal gift. Leave him alone all day to do whatever he wants. Eat whatever he wants. Drink whatever he wants. And let him sleep whenever he wants. And then ask him no questions about what he had got up to. Men just sometimes dont like in depth discussions. A mans ideal birthday day. 1

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm interested in seeing what the other men in here think about this. I can for sure give him some alone time, but I think he likes to spend time with me and has been looking forward to our week-long date without the kids. 🙂 I hope you get your ideal birthday!

Right, a man's ideal birthday. But not every man's ideal birthday. Not all wives control and nag their husbands. Nor do we all require a lot of discussion or from them. I don't need to leave my DH alone in order for him to eat whatever he wants, drink whatever he wants, sleep whenever he wants, or do whatever he wants. He's a grown man and gets to make those decisions for himself, even when I am with him. He's my husband, not my child. And trust me, he definitely prefers my company and certain attention from me to being left alone all day.
ed01106 Posted August 12, 2019 #23 Share Posted August 12, 2019 As the last few comments illustrate not every guy is of the same mind set for the ideal day. So rather than ask random strangers on the internet that know neither him nor you. Ask him. Also you have been living with him for six years, you should have a pretty good idea by now if he prefers to sleep in or get up early and watch the sunrise from the deck. And if you don’t you should start paying attention more, cause I am pretty sure he has told you what he likes and doesn’t like. Beyond that ask his best friend. I can tell you how I would like to spend the day, but that might be something your husband hates.
EMOSEA Posted August 12, 2019 Author #24 Share Posted August 12, 2019 (edited) Hubby came home for lunch and I asked him, "what does your ideal day look like on the cruise for your birthday?" And he said, "Smoke some nice cigars, drink a lot of mojitos, and hang out with you." 🥰 Beyond that, I know he would enjoy a massage, going out to sushi (his favorite), and I can leave him for a bit with his notebook to write for a while, which he also enjoys doing. I'm totally happy heading to the gym for a while so that he can do that. Edited August 12, 2019 by EMOSEA grammar
