Doing Laundry in Your Cabin Bathroom

Sorry but I am nor doing laundry on vacation. We usually take 14 night cruises and pack for 14 nights. We are platinum so get 1 bag of laundry free each per cruise but usually use that for our favorite clothing that we want to wear again. Yes we end up with 2 suitcases each but it is worth it not to have to worry about laundry  on a cruise. I like to have a lot of choices on what to wear.

I met a guy  when I was in Aruba last year who dropped his laundry off at a launderette on shore. Picked it up 4 hours later. He said it was much cheaper than using the service on board.

We always send in our laundry and have pleased with the results.  With the weekly special and 2 Platinum + bags, we never run out of clean clothing.  EZPZ. They come back neatly folded and I damaged.

The only thing I would wash in the sink would be underwear or something simple like that. I don't wan my cabin filled with wet clothes and certainly the line in the shower isn't going to hold too much at once. We always use the ship laundry service and I can't remember ever losing one piece. Some of the clothes do come back a bit on the grey side, but one washing when we get home and all is well .  I am surprised at how many people do some of their owe laundry. We keep our clothes needs down by doing a lot of mix and match We also have found that the bags if filled carefully hold a lot more than you might think.

Good to know that NCL will Cold Wash. We have free laundry as a loyalty perk on Celebrity and always specify Cold Wash. My only complaint are the tiny stick-on tags placed in the clothes- they are hard to spot and do not come out without a big tug. Often I don't find them until after several washings back home when the tag starts to loosen and itches like crazy! Does NCL use a similar method to identify laundry?

I usually bring a small bottle of laundry detergent along with one of these, in case there isn't a good sink stopper in the sink:

I've had very good luck with the NCL laundry service, but I do a few things like delicates and swimsuits in the bathroom sink.

Yes, NCL uses the same method, and I sometimes find those tags on my clothes months later!  Luckily they've always come off cleanly when I've removed them.

Always wash the odd t shirt or small things in bottom of shower with shower gel or shampoo ,on our cruise purposely took some pegs and pegged them on back of chair on balcony overnight.

We always do some sink laundry.  We use the gym near daily, so things get rather icky.  It doesn’t detract from our vacation experience.  I use the shower gel, and wring out with a towel as described previously, then hang on a hanger or the line.  We also do use our platinum benefit for day wear, shorts, slacks, blouses.  They have always come back looking great.

How tacky looking if the whole ship did this. It will look like a 3rd rate tramp steamer, I've seen that in some ports.

I am SO picky about my laundry. I won't put most of my tops in the dryer, I hang them in the laundry room on a rack.  That being said, I have never had a problem with NCL laundry. Everything has come back the same size, same color, sparkling clean and neatly folded. I can't imagine wasting cruise time doing laundry in a sink, a bag or anywhere else!

I will definitely be looking into this as we are going on a very long 15 day cruise on NCL with no laundry rooms on the ship and we are losing sleep trying to figure out how to pack for that long with no "laundry room" (don't want to use the ships laundry facility due to both cost and washing everything in HOT water and drying everything that shrinks...haha) and keeping it under 50 lbs for the airlines - this is a tough one!  Thanks again!

 

When using NCL laundry service, I write on the slip to use cold water wash. If not specified, the hot water they use has an affect on garments. Plus they don't use fabric softener so clothes are stiff. 

On a side note, I had items washed on the ship and to this day, I can't get those darn wash tags off.

Quick follow-up on the NCL laundry service. I saw in one reply here and mentioned in other posts that NCL washes everything in hot water. Is that based upon what’s on the laundry order form or some statement from NCL? I wash very little in hot water and the comments about NCL washing everything in hot water is why I’m asking about washing clothes myself. So, just wondering if this is really true or just a perpetuated rumor that hasn’t actually been substantiated? Thanks!

Yes it's true they use hot water but you can request on your laundry slip a cold water wash which I do.

Thank you for the clarification! Did not know you could request "cold" water and they listen to the request??  That is very good to know for our upcoming 14+ day cruise.

They don't use fabric softener so by washing in cold water, my knit tops don't come out stiff as a board and scratchy.

If your clothing has been through the laundry at home a couple times should be no problem with

NCL doing it in whatever cold tepid cool mild warm water.

The only things to worry about are the Gift Shop or Port Gift Shop clothing items being laundered

for the first time - you know the precautions*** you would do with new clothing at home.

 

*** Read the laundry labels

 

Self service laundry on (OTHER) cruise ships - really tears into free enjoyable time on a cruise

and then that bucket of quarters from the casino to operate what machines are available and in service.

There are pros and cons to this issue - I like NCLs application - have someone else do it for you.

And that $19.95 bag deal when offered is the best. I do take a small vial of laundry soap just in

case of unexpected accident.

Nothing was ruined, nothing shrunk... for $20 it was so worth it -- we used the service twice. I had hung our bathing suits up on the line in the bathroom and they didn't dry overnight. Why waste your vacation time doing laundry?

I washed some laundry in the sink on our cruise in June.  I brought a small fan for both white noise and to help dry things that have been washed or swimsuits.  An extension cord is also very helpful.  Dr Bronners castille soap is good for washing clothes (and bodies) and is available in small travel sizes in a lot of Targets/Walmarts etc.

Same here!! I also wore things more then once, Febreeze fabric refresh works great unless you have been in casino lol
