Does the crew know we've pre-paid gratuities?

You missed my point completely.

The captain makes the most money because he has the hardest job, not in physical work, but in RESPONSIBILITY.

That doesn't mean he didn't start out as a towel boy, in fact, I can guarantee you at some point the captain worked some kind of grunt position / start up job that had no responsibility, but lots of hard (physical) work.

I don't feel bad for the laundry boy or other low paid workers...they have the same opportunities every other person has to better themselves.  Except, but automatically paying them tips regardless of their actual service quality, what have they learned?

(just that there's a sucker born every minute, and a lot of them are cruisers!!)

If you want to get your point across then stop talking in riddles.

Maybe the reason you can 't keep your story straight is due to the numerous usernames you're using.  Earlier in this thread you were posting as "atozer". Post #6 shows a quote made by "atozer", yet when you click on that quote it links to your profile....hmmmm....

Oh this is the best. So here’s my advice. The next cruise, spa, or dinner or whatever typical tipping situation you go into, please do tell the service provider *in advance* that you will *not* be providing a tip in cash.... but that - GOOD NEWS - because *much better* than cash, you will be giving him or her a hearty handshake and making an *actual connection* with them instead.

Instead of cash hand him or her a nice picture of you and your Grandkids visiting Disneyworld.  That way they will be able to retain the glorious memory or your "real connection" for years to come.

Gee, it's just all about YOU, isn't it?  Gotta make sure the little people remember YOU, have YOUR drink ready, fawn all over YOU.

Newsflash!  It's nothing to do with YOU, and all about your MONEY!!

And someday, the money runs out, and then see how much anyone remembers.

I'd much rather have made an actual connection with someone than remember some loudmouth throwing around cash.

Here you are contradicting yourself again.  So is the crew most interested in your money?  Or making an actual connection with you?   Again, you're claiming both.

Personally, I don't care if the crew remembers me when I leave the ship as I don't go on a cruise to make lifelong friends and connections with the crew.

Newflash! If you and I are both at the bar and the bartender knows that I tip with every drink and all you want to do is talk their ear off "making a connection", I will probably receive better service.

And you can also tell them how someday your grandkids are going to work on a cruiseline and be promoted from Towel Boy to Captain within 10 years!

We aren’t discussing extra tipping, but autogratuities from which crew is paid.

Its not a charity, but daily service charge. The only reason it’s not included into cruise fare is taxation purpose.

Ummm auto would suggest mandatory. It's not AUTOgratuities bc its not mandatory. And the only reason its not included is because it's a discretionary charge wherever you are.

I think you are misinformed about Cruise Ship Captains.  They will have at least a Bachelors, or maybe a Masters, in Maritime Science or Maritime Engineering.  After school they likely did start in Navigation or some other lower level Officer position.  In 2019, I don't think you will find a Captain who worked his or her way up from "Towel Boy".  Unless they took a break to earn a degree and came back.

Do you think that the Captain of the Ship was working in the laundry 30 years ago, and worked his way through housekeeping, the casino, dining room manager, engineering, and then Captain?   Unless the "Laundry Boy" saves up enough money to quit and go to college, he isn't becoming Captain.  He may be able to work hi way into Housekeeping Management, and then up though the Hotel side, but not Captain.

I don't care if you tip cash, use auto gratuity, or don't tip at all, that's up to you.  However, the rest of this isn't correct.  As with every position in life, the Captain has the most unique skill set and the hardest to replace knowledge, that's why they make the most.

yes.  they also have a list of who has removed the daily charge.   and for those that say  this is all supposition, I have personally seen said list on both the cabin stewards cart and  in the galley.

Thank you for confirming this.

I used to have auto gratuities but what I do now is that I purchase onboard credit which is refundable. In the less likely event that I need to remove a tip I won’t be able to do it if I have auto gratuities added to the account

No, it's not a daily service charge.  If it was, it wouldn't be optional.  Even the cruise line doesn't call it a service charge.

You mentioned "taxation purpose".  Can you elaborate on that?  Exactly what would that purpose be?

I have absolutely no respect for passengers that don't tip or don't tip enough. It's horrible what that does to the crew and their morale. Be respectful to them and do the right thing and tip them appropriately. It's one of those small things in life that defines a mans character.

A few hundred dollars isn't a small thing at least not to me. And I say few hundred because we are a family of 5. If paying extra defines a man's character what does being a follower say abt  that same man's character? The "right" thing is to throw your money away? What you really meant is "Do like everyone else and just pay it" like a follower.

I explained before why it’s charged as a separate charge. Business model which functions successfully because most passengers follow rules proposed by cruise line which services we all use.
Of course some people use interesting logic when it’s convenient, because they enjoy system where most others contribute, but they can save a bit. ;)

Are you calling autogratuities “extras”?

I would!

Really? So family of 5 receives usually great service paid by majority, but somehow they shouldn’t participate in contribution to this because it’s expensive for them? :)
You know cruising is not an essential service which must be subsidized for large families. It’s not good stamps or something.

It is a choice, if they don't wish to leave a tip, or adjust the tip,  it is up to them.

We are a family of 7, would never remove it. In many restaurants, an auto tip is added onto our bill, I will actually add more money if service warrants it.

It’s a choice to remove in case service was really bad. Service from all staff.
Removing for financial convenience is a wish to get a free ride knowing that service will still be good because majority contributes. :)

Wonderful! And this is how this should be done, but some people think they are special, smarter than others etc. only decency of majority allows them to continue receiving benefits of cruising system.
