Ren1216 Posted December 22, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 22, 2019 (edited) Seems a lot has changed since our last RC cruise. Can I still punch a hole in my Sea Pass to wear on a lanyard OR do I need to use a protective sleeve and keep the card in tact? Harmony, if it matters. You can punch a hole but only if you know where to do so - there's an antenna wire running along the edge of the card about 1/4" in. Better go with the sleeve.
Rare twangster Posted December 22, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2019 Oasis has converted to RFID. They have a special punch at GS. Perhaps Harmony has one too now.
Tee & Chilli Posted December 22, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 22, 2019 On Oasis if know you're in line only for the hole punch, you're quickly pulled aside without waiting. 1
msmayor Posted December 22, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2019 Surprising that, with all the folks who want holes punched, they have not yet redesigned the card to come automatically with holes. Our last cruise on HAL, there was already a hole in one end of the card when it was handed to us for attaching to lanyards with clips.
Magicat Posted December 22, 2019 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2019 Harmony has RFID, so no holes.

Guess they have a warehouse full of card with no holes and they want to go through them first.

Ovation did have card stock with pre punched holes, so some ships do have that.
squaremimi Posted December 22, 2019 #9 Share Posted December 22, 2019 I was on Harmony a couple weeks ago and wanted to punch a hole on the seapass card, was told I couldn't do that.
Ren1216 Posted December 23, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted December 23, 2019 Thanks for all the replies. I'll grab some of the card sleeves just in case. When I make a purchase (drink, whatever), think I'll actually need to pull it out of the sleeve? Not sure if they have to swipe it... or if it has a bar code... I was told the same thing on Harmony in October. I had brought my own lanyard but not a sleeve so wound up buying a RC lanyard with the sleeve. 32 minutes ago, Ren1216 said: Thanks for all the replies. On the ships with RFID, they place the card on a sensor pad that can detect the card from inside a sleeve.
mal12561 Posted December 23, 2019 #12 Share Posted December 23, 2019 We bought these a few years ago, works quite well not requiring any hole. Just firmly slide card in away from the magnetic strip side, holds when wet, and even when a lanyard is attached they can slide the card through a magnetic reader. https://www.scrubpocket.com/product-p/20013.htm
MrChocoholic Posted December 23, 2019 #13 Share Posted December 23, 2019 DON'T DO IT! Unless you have the vision and coordination required to perform precision plasticectomy surgery, leave it to the pros. Those clear holders are detachable and recyclable.
sellwingri Posted December 23, 2019 #14 Share Posted December 23, 2019 Based on our experience, I believe only the Oasis class and Quantum class ships don’t allow you to punch your card. Just got off Freedom and my husband has his punched.

The card has a special chip inside so it can open stateroom doors by placing it close to the door lock. Punching a hole in the wrong place on an RFID card can destroy the circuitry. not-enough-cruising Posted December 24, 2019 #23 Share Posted December 24, 2019 You will know by the ship you are on and the fact that the card does not have a magnetic strip on the back.
