Smoking?

Fear not!  Majesty has a machine in the casino to filter smoke.  One machine.

Unfortunately it doesn't prevent the smoke from reaching into the Schooner Bar.  It's okay unless you are a sports fan.  The end where they play sports on the TVs is near the casino.  The other end is where the piano is.

If you are into sports and don't like smoke you are better to stay in your cabin and watch it on your generous cabin TV.

OMG!!  Love it!!  😄 😄

Thanks Pat,I appreciate your best wishes.

The hospital gave me a goody bag of new medicine for Xmas.

Insurance company cancelled our annual travel insurance when we notified them even though it still had 4 months left then quoted 10x previous price for a new policy.

Best alternative quote from elsewhere is 4 times what we had paid previously.

Oh that's awful about your insurance company!  Why even have it if we can't use it...really nasty of them to do that.  😞

Thanks DS friend to the west!!  🥂  And the same to you and yours!  Getting in any New Year's skiing yet?

No I'm done for this season. A couple of days before Christmas I went skiing and long story short I tweaked my back. Feeling a lot better now but won't be skiing. Won't be long until you'll be feeling the motion of the ocean.

You're making assumptions about Europeans. Smoking is also dropping in most of Europe.  In some countries it's as low as 6% of the population.  And, as others have pointed out, it's already banned on ships sailing from the UK and Aus.
You are correct, partially. Smoking is dropping across Europe, but still above the U.S. populations. The UK is similar or just above the US, while countries such as Italy, France and Spain range between 18 & 25 percent. I make no assumptions. While smoking is dropping across Europe, it is much less stigmatized and more readily accepted in public venues.

Thanks!  Yes we have a little "appetizer" cruise coming up on Mariner next week indeed.  Gets us a nice start to our cruising season!

Can't remember any annoying smoke smell on last Mariner trip.  I know sea days on the Radiance ladies anywhere near the Centrum is cough..cough..gagg!!  As Bob calls it..."smoke distribution system".  🤢

They said if it happened while we were on holiday they would have honoured the policy and paid any expenses but that policy was not available for anyone who had previously had a heart attack so they cancelled it.

So, two smaller countries you named have higher rates. You can't compare by country with much smaller populations as they have little, if any impact on the number of smokers on cruises.  If you average out Europe, it's not really overall much more than the US.  Sweden's rate is 6% and there are multiple countries less than 15%.  80% of smokers live in countries with low or middle incomes which means the vast majority of smokers probably aren't cruising on US cruise ships.  Having cruised for 14+ years, I've seen a huge decline  in the number of smokers.  The problem is it affects everyone around them.

What I find interesting is Brunei has the lowest smoking rate in the world and they have very strict laws pertaining to it, including advertising, sales and banning all inside smoking plus most public spaces.  I guess if you make it more difficult, most people won't bother.  I bet culture has something to do with it too.

It's only a matter of time.  Smokers in the US are down to 14% of the population and still dropping.

Unfortunately it's being replaced with vaping, which IMO is worse than smoking. Walking into that cloud of water is like having someone spit on you.

The only indoor spot is the casino.  Bob calls it a smoking lounge  with  some gambling.  Some (non US based )  itineraries don't allow smoking in the casino and Empress doesn't  allow smoking in the casino regardless of itinerary.

I believe Celebrity does not allow smoking in any indoor venue.    There may be other lines as well.

From the looks of all the  full ships - it doesn't appear there is any reason for RCCL to change their policy.

M

I Cruise only longer 10-17nites. Ironic thing is they Fuel up at least once a Cruise and during that whole day no outside smoking allowed, only place they can is Casino even if open or closed

I can’t believe that here we are in 2020 and RCCL still allows smoking INSIDE. It’s gross and a public health hazard. How do we pressure them to change this?

Shame them on Facebook

But I thought 2020 was all about being inclusionary

Possibly overall, but what is the percentage of the population 18-65

CDC:  Current smoking has declined from 20.9% (nearly 21 of every 100 adults) in 2005 to 13.7% (nearly 14 of every 100 adults) in 2018,

Current cigarette smoking was highest among people aged 25–44 years and 45–64 years. Current cigarette smoking was lowest among people aged 18-24 years.

  • Nearly 8 of every 100 adults aged 18–24 years (7.8%)
  • Nearly 17 of every 100 adults aged 25–44 years (16.5%)
  • About 16 of every 100 adults aged 45–64 years (16.3%)
  • About 8 of every 100 adults aged 65 years and older (8.4%)

From what I’ve seen working in a hospital, it seems there’s a lot of smokers, and meth use.

In the UK a pack of 20 branded cigarettes is equivalent to $15, advertising is banned, smoking kills on the packaging and packets are hidden from view in shops.

Smoking is banned indoors in public venues

Smokers tend to die at an earlier age than non-smokers so that lowers the numbers as people age.  Everyone I know personally that smokes or smoked didn't make it much past 70 and a lot of them have ongoing health issues which make them stop at some point.  Both of my grandfathers died from cancer from smoking cigarettes (67 and 70) so that made the decision for myself, siblings and cousins.  None of my generation on either side of my family smokes or ever has and neither of my kids or their cousins do either.  We live in a very highly educated area and smokers are very few and far between.  It's been proven that the higher the education level is, the less likelihood of smoking.  Out of 45 people in my office group, none smoke and the average person has a masters degree and I'm the only one who doesn't have at least a bachelors (I went to college for 3 years).  Our main building of 2,000+ also has a very low level of smokers and it's dropped considerably over the years and the ones you see now are mostly the young enlisted military.  The most smokers I've seen on a cruise in the last few years is when go out of Baltimore which is much more blue collar and has a lot of locals cruising.  Anyway, my point really is age isn't the only factor.

*Current smokers are defined as people who reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes during their lifetime and who, at the time they participated in a survey about this topic, reported smoking every day or some days.

The numbers of current smokers above include people who only smoke on some days (but not every day) as long as they've smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.  This is basically anyone who has ever smoked and hasn't completely quit.  The heavy smoker numbers are probably a lot less.
