Barney10 Posted January 19, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2020 Do we need to carry our passports ashore for processing by customs and immigration in the countries of the ports of call?

Caribbean? No you don’t. We do carry a colour copy of our key page of our passport but you don’t have to. You do need a picture ID to take with your key card. Your Canadian driver’s license does the trick since your photograph is there and it is Government issued. 🙂

There are a few of the ports you'll need to do that. You'll be notified onboard for those ports you need to carry your passport off the ship.
FOPMan Posted January 19, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 19, 2020 Generally speaking, no. But you do need/should carry photo ID in addition to your ship’s ID card. You usually need it to get back into the port area, and you need your ship ID to reboard.
leerathje Posted January 19, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 19, 2020 Hi Barney, DH and I were on a 9 day cruise to the Caribbean January of 2019. We did not need our passports at ANY port we travelled to. L.
catl331 Posted January 19, 2020 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2020 You may not need to carry your passport off the ship but if you miss the sailing because of any kind of accident you are in a kind of a bind to get home without it! Yes, theoretically, if there is enough time, your cabin safe will be opened and your passports will be given to the port agent. Theoretically. We prefer to carry ours in every port.
canadianbear Posted January 19, 2020 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2020 When we did our 21 day Caribbean cruise we usually only took our drivers license and our medical proof for out of country and put in a water proof container as we snorkelled a lot. I don’t recall any port where we needed to take our passport. We do carry photo copies of it though.
Homosassa Posted January 19, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2020 One reason you may need your passport ashore is because of shore excursions that may visit a nearby island. In our last Rotterdam tour, we had a port stop in Antigua. There was a shore (helicopter) excursion to the nearby island of Barbuda. Although Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign state consisting of the two islands, passports were needed to fly from Antigua to Barbuda as they would be checked in Barbuda.
