Caribbean?  No you don’t.  We do carry a colour copy of our key page of our passport but you don’t have to.

You do need a picture ID to take with your key card.  Your Canadian driver’s license does the trick since your photograph is there and it is Government issued. 🙂

There are a few of the ports you'll need to do that.  You'll be notified onboard for those ports you need to carry your passport off the ship.

You may not need to carry your passport off the ship but if you miss the sailing because of any kind of accident you are in a kind of a bind to get home without it! Yes, theoretically, if there is enough time, your cabin safe will be opened and your passports will be given to the port agent. Theoretically. We prefer to carry ours in every port.

When we did our 21 day Caribbean cruise we usually only took our drivers license and our medical proof for out of country and put in a water proof container as we snorkelled a lot.  I don’t recall any port where we needed to take our passport.  We do carry photo copies of it though.

One reason you may need your passport ashore is because of shore excursions that may visit a nearby island.

In  our last Rotterdam tour, we had a port stop in Antigua. There was a shore (helicopter) excursion to the nearby island of Barbuda. Although Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign state consisting of the two islands, passports were needed to fly from Antigua to Barbuda as they would be checked in Barbuda.
