nccruzencouple Posted January 29, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2020 Has anyone applied for a Passport lately and know how long it took to get them back. Need to renew one for one of my kids and and apply for a new one for my other one. Just wondering on how long it is taking now. Renewed mine last year and it only took 3 weeks to get back. eileen2664 Posted January 29, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 29, 2020 I just sent my renewal in but did new passports for my kids. Applied at post office/mailed on 12/28 and got them back Monday. So right around 4 weeks, even with the holidays in there.
idraconis Posted January 29, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 29, 2020 Always give it 4 weeks.
bar1068 Posted January 29, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 29, 2020 We renewed ours through the same local post office we got the originals from. We got the renewed passports in about 10 days
TeresaJ Posted January 29, 2020 #6 Share Posted January 29, 2020 I sent mine in first week of January and I was notified that it was mailed out yesterday. So about 4 weeks for me too. Still waiting on my husband's even though they received the renewals the same day.

We are doing a renewal for a minor. I think our appointment was 1/3 at a local packaging store that processes passports. The passport agency received it 1/8 and they shipped it yesterday. Tracking says expected delivery is today. The email updates I was getting from the state department was stating it was taking 6-8 weeks at this time but obviously ours was shorter than that. It is important to note that passport processing times certainly do change seasonally. The government passport website will state 6 to 8 weeks. Our renewals took about 5 weeks. Good point, the email updates on the processing was very helpful.
Florings Posted January 29, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 29, 2020 Allow 6-8 weeks and be nicely surprised to get them back in 3-4 weeks.

Purvis1231 Posted February 1, 2020 #13 Share Posted February 1, 2020 Can adult now renew passport by mail?

I believe you have to go through an Agent -- The Post Office is an Agent. They charge you something like $30 to process and send on your renewal application, in addition to the $140 passport/card. Purvis1231 Posted February 1, 2020 #15 Share Posted February 1, 2020 I just checked online and it does indicate adults can renew by mail without paying the agent fee.

Yes, if the passport being renewed is a permanent one (not issued before 16) and has expired less than 15 years from the original issue date. (Why they don't just say 5 years from the original expiration date is beyond me.) The passport must be undamaged and you have to be able to document any name changes. TeresaJ Posted February 1, 2020 #17 Share Posted February 1, 2020 I can confirm also that yes adults can renew by mail. But must fit criteria that sparks1093 posted. Mine took 4 weeks and my husband's just a few days more than mine.
