But back then most households had at best one car that dad drove to work so a corner store was needed for mum to pick up the necessities. Ours were the same. Easy walking distance and no second car. Indeed, mum never learnt to drive. She would give us a couple of bob and go off to buy whatever (bread and milk having been delivered by horse and cart). A big shop at one of the new supermarkets on Saturday morning when dad was home. Interesting thing about supermarkets, it has been reported that a number of woolies stores are removing their dei counters. Now just selling the heavily over priced, pre-packaged stuff. https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/woolworths-coles-deli-counters-disappearing-from-some-stores/news-story/c1f584878d4f8aaa9738c0f79cd67999 Edited August 16, 2020 by Docker123

Don’t think so, haven’t been through that way for ages, another place by passed, used to stop there frequently back in the 60s. Knew it straight away though. Had a feed there many times, late 60's, early 70's, whilst escorting the long and wide loads up north, in particular to the Power station constructions up at Lake Munmorah, Liddell etc. Kangy Roadhouse was on the Pacific Hwy @ Ourimbah. Memories. There was even a little zoo attached from memory, Aussie natives, like Roos and black snakes. Edited August 16, 2020 by NSWP
Blackduck59 Posted August 16, 2020 Author #830 Share Posted August 16, 2020 When I was growing up in what was a pretty rural area we had a small store about a mile away then about 2 miles away there was a little whistle stop type place there was a hardware store, 3 gas stations (all with service bays and gas service) a little restaurant a small store and a larger "General Merchandise" store with boots, rain coats, hats, clothes, cook wares etc. There was another bigger General merchandise store about 5 miles a day. It was a pretty self sufficient little community. Now it is a fast growing city and we really don't need to go to "Town" (Victoria) for anything, but we do.

Blackduck59 Posted August 16, 2020 Author #832 Share Posted August 16, 2020 Here I thought for sure some Kiwi would be wondering why they are locked down at home and the R.N.Z.A.F. was sitting on the tarmac in the great white north. I have no idea why they were here, we just happened upon the plane after breakfast. Yes uncle Les I had the B52 breakfast...2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, 2 ham, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, breakfast potatoes and toast. Lynn had the waffles (another recent topic of discussion) And a vintage BMW? nothing.

Blackduck59 Posted August 16, 2020 Author #834 Share Posted August 16, 2020 how about this then Mr. Gut? There was 3 of them there in driving condition yesterday and another one very early on in what will be a very long restoration. The 3 gull wings alone are worth $1,500,000.00 (USD) each. There were also 3 roadsters and a very neglected Lamborghini. And don't forget the newer (relatively speaking) Merc roadsters in the background of the BMW photo. That shop is a car enthusiasts dream cache.

But doubt I could climb in and out of, the German staff car you put up once would suit, a few years back came real close to buying a Merc convertible till I realised that even then getting in and out was too hard on the old back. Went for a Lexus SUV instead had a couple since, very nice ride, but gave it to my daughter earlier this year so shopping again.

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted August 16, 2020 #839 Share Posted August 16, 2020 (edited) Even bigger suburban shopping centres have lost many of their food shops. When I first moved to Lane Cove there were four delis, three butchers, two fish shops, and two or three greengrocers, plus more butchers and greengrocers in smaller shopping centres nearby. There were two supermarkets, Coles and another one. Over the years Woolworths moved in, Coles expanded then recently moved to a new, much larger, location along with Aldi. There are no delis but the only butcher has a deli counter, no fish shops, no greengrocers. However we do have a lot more cafes and restaurants. The butcher and greengrocer at the smaller shopping centre we go to are still going strong, thank goodness, and the takeaway shop sells a small selection of fresh fish. Blackduck59 Posted August 16, 2020 Author #840 Share Posted August 16, 2020 The Merc you liked is in the background beside the Gullwing. Of course this conveniently for you has the steering wheel on the wrong side😉 I think it even has suicide doors for convenient ingress and egress...Lagonda, that white ribbon is 3rd place at Pebble Beach Concours D'elegance. This one is probably a little less affordable than the Packard.

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted August 16, 2020 #847 Share Posted August 16, 2020 (edited) The Phryne Fisher one was red though. Didn't they actually find a real one, in the right colour, for the TV series? Edited August 16, 2020 by OzKiwiJJ

Blackduck59 Posted August 16, 2020 Author #849 Share Posted August 16, 2020 That is a beauty Adrian, the Packard I showed earlier is the closest I have seen to that. I haven't read any Phryne Fisher books but I believe the car in the show is a real Hispano Suiza. As shown in the pictures the one from the TV show is a Dual Cowl Phaeton and the one in the first picture is a Drop Head Coupe. That crane mascot just drips with class. Bowm54 Posted August 16, 2020 #850 Share Posted August 16, 2020 Hi Blackduck59, the RNZAF Boeing 757 aka aidforce1, will be delivering crew for NZs two frigates, HMNZS Te Mana and Te Kaha which have for the past year or so been tied up at Esquimalt dockyard on Vancouver island having new combat systems fitted, to enable interoperability with allied navies for the next decade. The NZ navy has had a long relationship with the Canadian navy, in fact I done trips there in the late 70s and again in the early 80s. Shortly afterward the NZ government got the pip with the USA over nuclear visits to NZ and sent the ships to the Middle East instead. The North American trips were absolutely brilliant while they lasted.
