I get the impression that this sabre rattling by the EU is a bit of a smokescreen to divert attention away from their poor performance in acquiring sufficient vaccine orders for their own citizens. Firstly they stopped individual member states from striking deals on vaccine supply and insisted on a centralised system that introduced delays - hence the fact that they are behind the curve by about 3 months. Secondly they backed at least one horse that failed to finish - the French Sanofi vaccine.

 

In contrast we in the UK immediately convened a vaccine acquisition team of industry specialists who struck deals quickly with a number of the fledgling research groups. To date it seems that we were lucky in some respects and have backed at least 5 potential winners with maybe another 2 coming up on the rails.

OK we have been lucky - but there's an phrase that says you make your own luck if you go about things in the right way. At least our vaccine strategy is one of the shining lights in an otherwise gloomy set of performances in this pandemic

Do you remember all the stick that Boris Johnson got for not signing up to the EU vaccine acquisition program. He insisted we were better striking our own deals.

No, they didn't.  Hungary,  for example, has gone it alone. Individual countries couid have made their own decisions, but chose not to.

Not sure, but the posts above seem to indicate that Germany, at least, is doing its own thing as well as being part of the EU grouping.

Germany have placed orders direct with biontec and Cyprus have done some sort of deal with Israel.

Ironically I seem to remember reading that one of the top scientists that created Novochok has created a new vaccine

Yet another Hurrah!

 

Got my Invite today  dated 25th.   As previously mentioned  I live 3 minutes

walk from the Main hospital around here  - options to book 9 miles away!!

No on site parking!!   It says if these are not suitable I can keep trying

for a different one. 

 I have backed out of that and  asked my GP if they can get me in at the hospital or  their vaccination centre. Thanks @tring .

GP is working today  but not hopeful of a reply.  Dont want to wait too long in case supply goes pearshaped but  will wait til I hear from GP or a nearer

centre comes up.  We are in Preston supposed to be getting a  Mass  vaccine centre and separately  a central test centre for city centre workers but they havent decided ( or said they have decided) where as yet.

Bit odd really as we had a walk-in test centre at one point then they closed it and I am not sure there is a huge number of City centre workers - most

are on various trading/commercial office estates on the outskirts.

Maybe up in time for DW  as she is next age group.

Reading bits of the contract, appears that AZ were not required to deliver until the European regulator gave their approval. If we had signed up, we would only now be getting the AZ vaccine despite our regulator approving it a month ago!

We were contacted by our doctor to make our appointments about a week after receiving Frank's NHS invite so you never know🤞 We are in different age groups too. I did wonder if they sent out the invites so that people who can travel use the hubs and those of us that can't use the smaller local clinics.

It all seems a bit disjointed,  although, to be fair,  the numbers vaccinated are excellent.

Mrs W got a phone call from our surgery yesterday, giving her an appointment at the local vaccine centre tomorrow. Today she got a letter inviting her to book an appointment on line.

Better to have two chances of an appointment rather than one of course, but it does show how fragmented the NHS has become.

One of my friends who lives locally is getting his jab next Friday. He is only 59 but is clinically extremely vulnerable.

Inevitable I guess given the speed that they are going at. My Mum had a phone call from her GP’s and had her first jab 3 weeks ago. They said that the GP surgery would contact her 12 weeks later to arrange the second jab. She has subsequently received a letter from the NHS inviting her to book BOTH her first and second jabs online or via phone (119?), so she is now somewhat confused, as are we. She is planning to wait until the 12 weeks is almost up and then call her GP’s if she hasn’t heard anything more (although unfortunately her GP practice is very poor). Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but a bit unsettling for elderly folk who are inclined to dwell on things at the best of times!

BIL  has emailed he has just had his 1st jab  (or maybe 3rd)  He ,as did some of you took part in the Novavax trials but was never told if he had the real thing or the placebo.   He doesnt know why he was called up  for a vaccine

as he is in the 60-69 group  but went and they didnt know either but gave it.

Arm was sore for 2 days  so he contacted  whoever at Novavax and they said it was OK but in no circumstances should he take a  second (Fourth) jab  until it was confirmed what he had had on the trial as 3 was more than enough for anyone!!! 

Just wondering if any of you have been told what you had in the trials and what you have to do when called up under the normal channels.

If we had only been part of the EU purchase our regulator would not have been looking at it as I understand it.  Germany had made another extra purchase of their own and is why their regulator was looking at it themselves.

Have you seen the letters?    Mine for my first jab says   (inter alia)

If you have had your first vaccine dose already , ignore this letter.

the nhs will contact you when it is time for your second.

 

So your plan of waiting for a follow up from the GP seems the way to go.

I know it's all the NHS, but there are two different departments at work here, the main NHS body and the local GPs both working together towards vaccinating as many people as they possibly can in the shortest amount of time. There were complaints not long ago about the slow rollout and now they are complaining about being offered the vaccine from too many places. Will no-one ever be satisfied or do they just need to constantly complain that nothing is ever good enough? 

I'm just grateful that I don't live 'somewhere else😉'

I think it was one of our nurses on here who said they wished the could just show them the inside of an  ICU  and maybe that would stop the moaning . Given the choice of a sore arm / location/town  for having the vaccine I will gladly put up with these minor issues and be very grateful to all concerned in keeping me out of the hospital .  Thank you NHS  your doing a great job !

Our niece works at a care home and they had their jabs scheduled for last week. SIL and BIL had a call. The care home had too many doses delivered so could they pop down straight away and have their jabs. They are both 66.

Very strange they are using a centre where there is no parking - is there not even a car park nearby?  Our hub is at a sports centre, which is reasonably central for the GP's using it as we do not live in a remote location, though quite a walk from the nearest bus route.  Up to about 6 miles or so maximum so quite handy.

 

As well as the GP hubs, there is a hospital giving vaccinations near us, (not in the main hospital building, but another one about 5 miles away) but they are dealing with NHS and other care staff so I do not think there is a transfer between the two in our area.  The whole country seems very different though, so set up could be quite different in your area, just a nuisance for you that you will likely not get a reply to an email or phone call until after the weekend.

 

The only mass vaccine centres in our region are an hour's journey from us, approx 50 or 25 miles away, though the 50 mile one may well be the quickest as a lot of the journey would be on motorways, rather than through a road tunnel and heavily built up city areas.  We had decided that we would travel that distance if we needed to, but the text came from our GP and have been booked into their hub so much easier. 

 

I have also seen your post about someone who had been in a vaccine trial.  As I understand it from posts on here by people on trials and a phone conversation we have had with a trial that we had registered to be part of but had not joined, the standard advice is that if you are offered a vaccine, you should contact the trial people who will arrange for you to be "unblinded", so you will subsequently be told if you have already had a vaccine or the placebo.
