Italy in May 21

Has the government indicated whether they will allow cruises and passengers from NA into Italy in May.  Haven't heard much and May isn't that far off.

Many cruise lines have canceled Europe cruises into May or June...I know Holland America has. Vaccination has been slow to ramp up in much of Europe.

Italy is under a state of emergency until April.  It is highly unlikely that tourists from outside of Europe/Schengen area will be welcomed before June.

So far only MSC is running with the MSC Grandiosa. This cruise is only having Italian ports and Malta.

 

Costa had a major IT problem which is still not solved. They wanted to restart March 13th but I doubt it. The ships could go but due to the IT problems you can´t book online or manage your cruise online.

 

Greece, Spain, France still have their ports closed for larger cruise ships.

 

So far all international cruise lines have cancelled their Med cruises til the end of April. But there are signs that May cruises will be cancelled too.

 

Italy was pretty open to tourists. But travel options (especially international flights) are pretty limited right now and I don´t see any changes soon.

 

There´s a lot of talking about those who got the vaccine should be allowed more... But actually Europe is far behind the US or UK. So far I´d be lucky to get my first shot in April... But I fear it won´t be earlier than May.

Travel to Italy, from the US, is currently prohibited (for tourism).  Given the COVID situation in Europe there is no reason to think that the restrictions will be eased in the near future.  My own suspicion it that the EU (including Italy) might begin to relax restrictions by late Spring but would likely require proof of COVID vaccination and perhaps also a COVID PCR test.  But it sure is hard to imagine this could happen in time for May cruises. The cruise lines cannot wait until the last minute to cancel cruises (at this point just getting a crew to the ship is a great expense) so I would think most  2021  European cruises will get cancelled in the next couple of months.

NCL just canceled their Europe cruises until at least June 1, 2021.

 

Just doesn't sound like any travel to Italy, or Europe, is highly likely before June.

Interesting article in La Repubblica today.  As of today, 2/21/21, the rate of vaccination in Italy is 3.5% for the first dose and 2.2% for the second dose.  So a total of 5.7% of Italians have had at least one dose.

Herd immunity is likely after 70% of the population is vaccinated. 

The following interactive page predicts that at the current rate of daily vaccinations (67,000 shots per day), 70% of the population of Italy will not be vaccinated until 2024. 

In order to vaccinate 70% of the population by May 2021, the daily vaccination rate would have to increase from 67,000 shots per day to 813,000 shots per day; and for 70% by September 2021, the daily shots would have to be 363,000.

When looking at potential for herd immunity, though, one also has to factor in the immunity of those who already had COVID, and those numbers were quite high (at least in certain parts of Italy)....

 

That said, I'm not sure 2021 travel to Italy is in the cards.

I think you are misreading the figures.  

As of today Feb 26 at 7.01am the figures are:

1st dose 2,587.866 (4.3%)

2nd dose 1,362.859 (2.26%)

Total:        3,950.725

You can't add the first and second dose figures together, as those with a second dose are already included  in the first dose figures.  As proved by the 'Total Doses Administered' figure.

So only a total of 4.3% have received inoculation at this point.

I just saw the animation on the first link showing the overlapping doses.  Last week they were showing the doses separately. It's encouraging to see that the rate is increasing and that they have vaccinated almost an additional 1% of the population in 5 days.  At the previous rate they would have met their target in 2024; now it is 2023.  I hope the rate increases a lot faster. 

 

Those websites are really cool. I wish they had something similar in the US.

This month the European Commission will consider a covid passport called the "Digital Green Pass" in order to facilitate business and pleasure travel.   The passport will indicate whether the person has been vaccinated or, if not vaccinated, the most recent covid test results.  

So, we'll see what happens.  Each country has to approve it and it must safeguard privacy concerns.
