FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY?

I just finished the online check in for my upcoming Horizon cruise 10.24-21, and there was a section about facial recognition which seem to indicate that this technology would be used to keep track of who was on the ship and who had gone ashore.

Is this correct?  Do you still need to scan your sail & sign card each time you come and go from the ship?

Yes and yes. They had to do me 5 times to get my facial whatever so I could board. ..and it was used.

They also scanned my card when I got off at ports. No I didnt put it into a card reader but you have to have it scanned each time you get off in ports. She had a hand held scanner.

Yes, that is correct. Carnival takes your picture during embarkation process, and is used every time you get off the ship, and every time you get back on it. It speeds up the process a great deal.

Customs & Immigration is also using it.  Quick scan both on and off, likely compared to our Passport photo and, once recognized, off you go.  No stopping either time to see a Customs agent.

And yes, you still scan your S&S card in ports just like the old days.  In that case, the crew member has your pic from embarkation pop up on his screen so it remains a manual process for him/her to recognize you.

I don't think they actually use the facial recognition for getting on and off the boat at ports.  They still scan your card, it pulls up a picture of you and they ask you to pull down your mask and they make sure you look like the picture. But as far as the actual facial recognition, its used when you get on and off for the first time.  You look at a screen where you can see your own face, once it recognizes you, it gives you the green light.  But the only time we did that was before entering the ramp for embarkation and in customs after debarkation.

It’s about time too…  this technology has been around and used in some industries for decades (like, did you think the casino host just happened on by your location before you inserted your card by accident?).

I bet they will use this for purchasing drinks soon I can imagine people abusing the drink package or fighting. When a fight occurs the CCTV will pull data from the Facial Recognition system and security can flag the passengers.

I'm all for it from a safety standpoint, quicker embarkation and disembarkation without using my Seapass. Maybe it will unlock your stateroom door with your face.

My passport photo was used to get on board in port canaveral Oct 7, but took a new photo in August. As others have said, you use your sail and sign card to get off and back on in ports. The facial recognition comes into play when debarking back at home port. When you enter the baggage area, you get in line for the facial recognition. Once you get scanned, you go get your luggage and out the door. No line to go thru Customs. Was great.

They can have my photo, however by using facial recognition, they are creating a database that I highly doubt is secure. Today, for many, personal privacy has given way to a feeling of safety. That requires a level of trust in people and institutions that I simply do not have. I'll stick with the photo and ID card for now.

Just wait until you hear what they do at the DMV.
