Cruise cancellation question

I tried the search function and after 4 pages I gave up and decided to ask directly.

My boyfriend of 28 years passed away suddenly on Sunday while I was in Florida returning from a cruise with my son.  We currently have 7 cruises booked.  I thought that I had read at one point that you can cancel your cruises and get a full refund due to a death.  Can someone confirm this for me?

3 of the cruises are paid in full and the other cruises have the deposit paid.  One cruise was booked with a future cruise credit and one cruise was booked with the $600 OBC offered by Carnival from the canceled covid cruise.

If you  had insurance, yes. I believe that would apply to any insurance, from Carnival or another company. However, if you did not have those cruises insured, you will likely forfeit your payments made so far. However, check on your deposits paid; some may be refundable even if you had no insurance on that cruise. I'd also suggest a call to the cruise lines and ask a supervisor about your loss and option for your payments.

In any event, sorry for the loss. Twenty six years is a long time.

Doug

So sorry for your loss. I would call Carnival directly. You are going to get into the legality of everything now. Because you are not married, the bookings with him are split 50/50. If you successfully cancel, you would only receive half and your boyfriend's beneficiary would receive their portion based on a will. You are going to have approach this with a lot of care.

Best of luck in this troubling time.

My SO died unexpectedly in 2017.  One Carnival cruise happened to be the day before final payment date, so the refund was made to the original form of payment (my credit card).  Another one was past final payment, so I used the travel insurance and received two refund checks.  One was made out to me, the other was made out to “The estate of……”.   Without the insurance, the normal penalties would have been applied, there was no provision made for the death of a passenger.  I kept one Royal Caribbean cruise because it was so far out in the future, and just changed the name to someone else closer to the cruise date.

You have so many other things to deal with right now, so if you can, it might be better to just hold any cruises that are prior to final payment date and make those decisions later.

I am so sorry this happened 😢

I am so sorry for your loss and totally understand what you are going through during this time.  Years ago our whole extended family had driven out of state to vaca at a beach house, FIL had a slip and fall accident (slippery tile) and ended up on life support due to fall, he passed within 24 hrs while we were on vaca, horrible circumstances all the way around.  We of course had to leave immediately for home to make arrangements (had only used 2 days of beach house so in the very beginning of our week) but the whole ordeal was like a bad nightmare.

I agree with previous posts, travel insurance would be the only way to recoup everything most likely (not that this is the priority when going through it) and god forbid take care of getting a body back home (you have no idea and most people think nothing like this could ever happen to them) as we as a family learned the hard way.  We now never travel without it even domestically and I hope you have it at least for some of the fully paid cruises.

Close in cruises they are allowing cancellations and giving refunds.

I think protocols are now thru feb. I would call for those and say you cant make protocols for all that you can and get a refund that way.

Maybe if some are soon after wait and cancel when those protocols come out and say again you cant do the covid protocols.

This is the only way I know how to cancel and get refunds if you booked nonrefundable rates.

hmmmm, I wonder if this would work because I just got off the Magic on Sunday with my son.  We were at Universal Studios when I got the call.

Each cruise was booked under a Casino offer. I thought of keeping the cruises but the offer was in his name and he needs to be present when we check in.  Correct?

The first 4 cruises we have booked are paid in full.

He would have to be there for the casino offers. A ton of this is going to have to do with who made payments. It is not going to be easy to do because the person with executor rights and/or power of attorney (or whatever term is used to speak on his behalf) will have to be involved in any decisions pertaining to financial decision. Unless there is a will that specifically designates this to you, it won't be you but next of kin. If there isn't a will, it will have to go through the courts to determine who speaks on his behalf.

I wish I could say this would be easy. Hopefully his family will make it easy for you. Just be prepared for this to be a long drawn out issue.

It would be easier to do a name change rather than request a complicated refund. If you can submit the death certificate, Carnival will change the name without penalties. (Speaking from experience).

Idk about the casino rate cruises she is booked for.

OP I'd call the casino dept and talk to them if you can go solo and explain the circumstances.

I cancelled a cruise a few months ago, the carnival agent I spoke with said I would recieve a future cruise credit assigned to my booking# a few hours later I got an e-mail from carnival saying I lost all of my money, I responded but never recieved a reply, bottom line carnival has some big time liars on staff, they are not the cruise line they used to be, be aware of this.

OP, sorry for the loss of your boyfriend.  That is very sad, and I wish you the best of luck getting everything handled.

A husband reported recently that he took a cruise that was booked in his wife's name under a casino offer (she was unable to go) and had no issues boarding or on the ship.  But I don't know if you want to take that chance or cruise solo.  In any event, if you have a PVP at Carnival, I would start there.  If you don't have one, maybe get one assigned to help you through this cruise cancellation process.

Every time you cancel you will receive a standard email stating the standard penalties.

You do have the future cruise credit, you need to call in to have it applied to a new cruise.

Email will not help as they're overwhelmed.
