You are right!!!  I sent off an email to Customer Relations to let them know how disappointed & concerned I am about this.   How did they think this would fly with the passengers.    I just read here on CC that it’s the same on the Emerald.  So that makes the Ruby, Grand & Emerald. Wonder if they will do the same on the Crown. Princess is saying not enough passengers are complaining.
Yes, that will be me going to the Passengers Service desk as soon as we board on the 10th.

Grace

"Not enough passengers are complaining" is due to: there are a limited number of aft cabins!!! Good grief! When you complain, please teach them a few math concepts.

We are on the Emerald in May and the Grand in March 2022.

Come on people........... let's sock it to them! I will certainly follow up.

Not enough passengers are complaining.

Seriously?

Princess could use that as license to do anything they want ... cheap and ill-prepared food, watered-down drinks, lousy entertainment, on and on.

Then pretent whatever is problematic only to you?

Interesting business model ... particularly when a company is so deep in red ink they can't afford to hack off anyone.

Wait a minute....you cannot walk laps around the Promenade Deck b.ecause they have parts roped off for smoking?  We are on the Emerald on 11/16 and that is one of the things that we are looking forward to.  We love walking the Promenade Deck.  It is one thing that we missed when we were on the Regal.

Following - We have an aft suite on the Ruby booked for a cruise in March.  I've been checking cabin number every day because some others have posted that they were moved without notice to less desirable rooms.  Now smoke coming up the the balconys?  That will render ours unusable.  I have asthma and my husband is on oxygen.; not to mention the horrible stench.  Walking around the promonade deck is one of my favorite passtimes on a cruise; so maybe not able to do that either.  As C&C love to cruise said - does Princess not remember who keeps them in business?  I'll be sending an email voicing my displeasure.  Im not ususally a complainer and we can't afford to cruise several times a year (saved up to be able to enjoy a suite)  but it's been over 2 years since we were able to take a vacation and I am really looking forward to this.

I would like to set the record straight on a few things that are being posted here.

1.  No one at Princess, that I am aware of, has said not enough passengers are complaining. What I was told by the wonderful and caring guest services manager, Sheila, on board the Grand is that to date only one other person besides me has brought this to her attention while on board. @CruiseRaiderposted did speak to Sheila on an earlier sailing.

2.  The only ship, that I am aware of,  that is roped off so passengers can not use the full promenade is the Grand.  There is a photo posted  by @redrobinon our first page.

3.  The comment & photo posted by @dchipin posts #29 & #30 make it clear that the Ruby has crew smoking in the starboard aft area but the area is NOT roped off and IS available to passengers.

4.  We have not had any first person posts from anyone on the Emerald or any other Princess ship.

Sheila did follow up with me yesterday by email confirming the Ruby would also have the promenade deck available for crew smoking. I suggested she investigate moving the smokers to the outdoor crew recreation area on the bow of the ship while we are in port. Port days are definitely the worst as there’s no breeze moving the smoke away. I’m hoping she gets back to me about that.

I am going to mention that in my email to customer relations.

A heartfelt Thank you to all who have taken the time to post about their experiences. Your posts will help us decide if we need to change our cabin choices.

Thanks fir the correction Denise. I’ll modify the picture to reflect just the half of the aft deck that is starboard when I get done with my errands.

I hope I posted this right. A post on the Emerald live from thread  posted by  @Bgwestwho just disembarked the Emerald.

Wow.  I really feel bad after reading all these posts from folks who carefully select their fave balcony location and now have to deal with crew smoking which never was an issue before.  IDK why they cannot use the bow deck area which is closed off to pax.  Let the crew deal with the wind - LOL.  At least use it exclusively when sailing at low speed or in ports (as @HaveDogWillTravel suggested).

We mostly book Inside so don't have to worry about this issue.  Just if they decide to take our area for isolation (which I hope won't be needed a year from now).

What I wonder is why they cannot use their old crew smoking area.  This is nuts.  They worried about vaccinated crew catching Covid when they are smoking???!!!  😨

If they socially distance while smoking, what's the problem?  Pax should not be subjected to this as there is enough smoking areas already before this.

I just wonder who in corporate management was responsible for this CruiseHealth protocol. Have they ever enjoyed walking the Promenade deck or watching the wake from an aft cabin balcony?

Also, interesting how covid protocols do not allow crew to smoke indoors, yet Princess still allows smoking by passengers in the money-making casino.

And it was upper management who did this as part of covid protocols. The teams are now pods and don’t mix below decks in closed areas. Restaurant crew is separate from housekeeping is separate from bar crew and so on. Outside they can distance and smoke. Inside they can’t.

@Steelers36 that is how Sheila explained it to me with regards to why they don’t smoke in the crew quarters like they used to.

@redrobinexcellent point about casino smoking.

I hope my picture of the Ruby smoking area is correct now. Thanks to @dchipfor the onboard help!

Really?!!  The crew don't mix - even with friends, family, SO's???

IDK the "below decks", but why not setup a second or third smoking area?  My thinking is that no one was thinking about how the smoking could impact on pax.  So, it will take a certain mass of pax complaining to change it.

Yes,    That’s what I was told here on CC by someone  on the Emerald right now or has just gotten home.

Thanks so much for taking the time to take these great photos . For us non-smokers it means a lot.  Are passengers able to walk thru this area???

Smoke smell update from San Pedro. This port is so stinky I couldn’t smell cigarette smoke if I tried. 🤣🤣🤣

I spent two hours at the Aft Terrace pool today. It was quite pleasant, quiet and hit in the sun. No smoke smell.

Thanks for keeping us posted. It looks like you got lucky going on the Ruby & not choosing the Grand. Hopefully you guys don’t have an Aft cabin or suite on the Starboard side, if you use your balcony a lot.   At least the passengers on the port side aft won’t have to smell the cigarette smoke smell from below on the Ruby.
San Pedro usually does have the gasoline smell in that port. Probably because of the refueling.
Have lots of fun on your cruise. And thanks again for all the info.

We were on the Grand last week in an aft facing cabin D737.  Tried to smell smoke as we had heard someone complaining, but really had no issues over the course of the cruise.  plenty of wind currents to clear any smoke, and a nice breeze when sitting in Cabo harbor.  Was not an issue for us or our neighbors.

Prices are currently about the same as a Club Class Mini but with all the suite perks.  I'd much rather be in a window suite without a balcony.

I would use the onboard coupon book from time to time on previous sailings and have been given them on more recent sailings but, how exactly do you pull up the offers now??

Obviously, we didn't use them but have been interested in how to use them in the future.

We're on the Ruby this week in C750 and haven't noticed any smoke on our balcony at all. I hope Princess sorts this out. And I'm sorry others have had their cruises ruined.

Great! We ran into couple of people who just complained about everything for the fun of it, and to get something free since the crew is very willing to please right now.  Hope it's just that or a specific condition or room that caused problems.  Hard to predict and/or modify how the air currents decide to flow.  We were on the Grand, which everyone knows is older, so you have to expect some inconvenience, or maybe consider alternative ships.  We thought it was in better shape than ever!

We were last on the Grand in January of 2020, and we thought it was in great shape. Wonderful ship. 😃

@AnyMajorCruiseDudeHi there. I am so glad that you had no issues with smoke on your D736 balcony. Post #34 discusses the problem in D737.

Might I ask how much time you spent out there?  Did you stay on your balcony while we were in port those two days?  Are you a smoker? Does the smell of cigarette smoke bother you in general?

I was in the owners suite B751 two decks above you. I was on my balcony every morning from 5:30 am to around 8 am, every afternoon from 1:30/2 until 5 pm and then again around 9 till whenever (depending on how I felt 10-12 and one night as late as 3:30 am). There was smoke approximately 60-70% of the times I was on the balcony.  Most of the time the smoke was annoying and several times it was intolerable.  I did not go into Cabo and on the port days I could not comfortably use my balcony.

I am sure it wasn’t me you heard complaining as I never mentioned this onboard to anyone other than a private conversation with Sheila the guest services manager.  I would be interested where you heard the complaining while on board.

I can assure you that I do not find it “fun” to complain. And I can also guarantee you that I don’t need anything for free. I am doing quite well thank you.

The “specific condition “ you refer to is the crew smoking directly below us on the promenade.

As I’ve said before I’ve sailed the Grand since 2015 at least twice a year and loved her and defended her even when you couldn’t stop running into buckets in the hallways catching all the drips!  I also posted earlier in our live what great condition she is in. This smoke is not an “inconvenience “ due to her age. That just makes no sense. It is from a brand new smoking area cordoned off and filled with crew smoking.

I can vouch for you on that!  I've never seen you complain about anything just to complain or to get something for free ... and we've cruised together a number of times now.  It's the reason we liked hanging out with you as we can't be around chronic complainers.  I can honestly say the smoking issue was bothersome for us, too and when guest services called us back, they wanted to send us a bottle of wine.  I kept telling her it wasn't necessary and not the reason I reported it.  When a supervisor came to the room, she noticed it as well.  BTW, I used to Crew Chat feature on the app and really was impressed on how quickly they got back to me.

We actually invited our next door neighbors on the ship over to our balcony and they also commented on how bad the smoke was on their balcony, too.  The day it was the worst was when we were docked in Ensenada and we stayed onboard.  It does make sense that it was the worst that day as there was a breeze that was hitting us on those aft cabins.  I really didn't notice it much at all while we were moving and like I mentioned, we didn't smell it at all on our balcony on the last cabin on the starboard side.

I'm not really sure where else they could they could assign it other than the very aft of the ship.  It's probably the most logical choice. But, from a passenger's point of view, it is a shame to pay for a premium cabin and have to endure all that smoke, though.
