What's your FUNNIEST Celebrity cruise story?

Another elevator story. I travel with a black Labrador service dog trained by Dogs for the Deaf. After eight months as a team I decided we were ready to take our first Celebrity cruise together but I was nervous and hyper-focused on her behavior. Actually she had been very well-trained, stood quietly and was sometimes hardly noticeable against dark furnishings.

We were alone on an elevator and several other people joined us. At the next floor, the doors opened with another group standing there ready to enter. “Back up!,” I commanded my dog in what I thought was a discreet whisper. Everyone on the elevator immediately shuffled backward in unison, giving me nervous side-glances.

Forgive me but I know this is not on topic; actually happened on HAL Rotterdam three weeks ago.

Me and the Misses arrived at our huge double wide cabin at 1 pm. The balcony was 180 sq ft! Sorry, back to my story. When we arrived at the cabin there was not one of those things you put on the outside of the cabin door handle that says Privacy Please or Do Not Disturb. I checked with Guest Services and they were plumb out of the thing. So while walking through the ship I found the perfect sign to put outside our cabin door; so I borrowed the sign late each nite and returned it to its proper location. The sign is located next to the Lincoln Center Stage where each nite classical music is played from someone playing a violin , jello and a piano; space is wide open so the sign is proper.

So the sign I put outside our cabin door before retiring was, “Quiet Please, Performance in Progress” 😳. Do you know I could hardly sleep each nite with so many passengers laughing right outside our cabin door.

I don't know what I laughed at more... the "performance" sign or the fact that apparently HAL has people who play classical music on jello.

Ten years ago on Century's last Alaska season we went to the dining room for the embarkation  dinner.  Our assigned table for six was near the entrance. Two other couples joined us about the same and I noticed that the table was sitting just below our necks- we were all short people. We looked like children seated around the table and everyone started laughing.

It turned out that the table height was adjustable and had been used for a display on the last night of the previous cruise. Cushions were quickly brought along with  free drinks and the next day the table was returned to its usual height. For the rest of the cruise we enjoyed the company of those people and laughed along with our waiter every evening when we sat down.

My husband and I were on the Edge shortly after she debuted.  We were sitting near the front of the theater waiting for the Guest Safety Briefing when we heard a commotion.  I turned around and saw several security people looking in our direction.  Next thing I know, one of the security personnel is climbing over two rows of seats to reach us.  The theater got quiet and people were staring at us.  Needless to say, we got a little nervous about what was happening and wondered what we possibly could have done.  Apparently while we were in the suite lounge at the Fort Lauderdale cruise port waiting to board, the person checking us did not do our check-in properly.  Security was alerted because our luggage was on board, but they had no record of us actually boarding.  The situation was very embarrassing.  But we both appreciated how serious Celebrity takes security.

I guess I meant cello. Only off by one letter. That’s pretty good. I guess if they played Beethoven’s 5th movement, then jello would work 😀

A few years ago, when my daughter was 7, we went on cruise on the Summit out of Puerto Rico.  Every morning we had breakfast at Cafe al Baccio.  Everyday the captain, who was on the younger side, was having coffee with a member of his staff.  On the first day he waived to my daughter.  On the second day, he gave her a high five.  The third day he called out to my daughter and used her name.  We were confused as we had never talked to him other than say things like good morning.   On the forth day, he cracked some sort of joke that resulted in a good laugh from her. That afternoon we were looking at photos and saw a picture of my daughter and the captain.  We were like what the heck is going on.  Based on the picture, we knew it had been taken at the kids club.  When we dropped her off that evening, we asked the staff about the captain.  Apparently, on most nights, he tried to stop by for a few minutes.  He had young children himself and enjoyed spending a few minutes with the kids.  For the remainder of the trip, he always took a few minutes to chat with our daughter at the Cafe.  She still treasures that photo.

Not exclusive to Celebrity, but always get a chuckle out of the people looking for their "mustard station" on the first day.

Or the people who are wondering about last minute upgrades or guarantees  asking at the pier if their names are on on the manifold....heard  on Celebrity and Princess.

That takes a pretty determined graffiti artist.

Several years ago I was cruising on the Equinox with three very lovely women; DW, daughter and friend of daughter. We were dining in the Tuscan Grille and while dining the Restaurant Manager came up to me and asked me, “Mr. RedneckBob, how come you are able to travel and dine with such lovely women.” I thought a minute and replied, “Money” 😀. Then a year later I was again on the Equinox but this time with only by DW. The same Restaurant Manager came to our table and my DW asked if he remembered us from a year ago. He said yes and asked what happened to the other two lovely women. I said, “I ran out of money”. ☹️

Forgot to mention that I may have another funny story to tell from a Celebrity cruise.
Last month hit it big in Vegas and will be traveling on the Equinox in two weeks escorting four lovely women! 😎

Early one morning I was sitting on our balcony  on the Infinity enjoying my morning coffee and croissants, the sounds of the sea and my favorite book when DH decided to join me. He pulled the balcony door shut behind him with quite a bit of effort and a loud disturbing screeching sound before I could say a word. We then realized that the door was locked with us on the balcony in our bathrobes and no phone. When we finished laughing, we realized our predicament. It was a sea day and we had no way of calling anyone to let us in and would have to stay out there until our cabin attendant came to clean our room. Luckily our next door neighbor came out to their balcony and we asked them to please call our attendant to rescue us. Every time we saw our neighbors for the rest of the cruise they burst into laughter as did we. DH is no longer allowed to close balcony doors if we're both out there on M-class ships. Luckily it's impossible to do on S-class.

We had this happen on the Infinity.  After closing the door, it locked, and we were stuck outside.  Did I mention that this was in Antarctica?  We were on the aft of the ship with lots of balconies, but we could not see anyone outside.  After a good 15 minutes in freezing weather, I finally heard someone talking.  I yelled out to them, and it turned out they were about 4 rooms down and a deck above.  They called our stateroom attendant.  We got to pay it forward a few days later when someone 3 doors down from us had the same thing happen.

That is a heartwarming story an it's made me cry. Makes me think of my son, who loved cruising. He's gone 2 years now, but I remember these times so vividly.

Hopefully, you weren't in your underwear, like all those people locked out in the hallway!  🥶

Our funny story has to do with the difference in terminology between British English and American English.

A few years ago my husband and I were having a glass of wine in Cellar Masters. We struck up a conversation with a nearby couple who were from Great Britain and we were talking about general things. We all had indulged a bit… and pretty soon the wife starts talking about her husband’s “indiscretion” and how everything is fine now, but there were some tense moments there between them. She went on to explain matter-of-factly, that “indiscretions”  DO happen when cruising and that it’s perfectly normal, and a couple just has to ‘move on’.

I snuck a glance at my husband and I could see that he was uncomfortable with the direction the conversation was going, just as I was…so we tried to respond delicately and sincerely.

Then the lady’s husband chimed in and they both said a couple more things about this “indiscretion”, when it FINALLY became clear to us (much to our relief) that they were merely talking about a fight or an argument between the couple…NOT an affair or a cheating situation.

We never let-on to the couple that we had misunderstood their use of the word “indiscretion”, but we still chuckle about the incident today. 😝

Side Note: our youngest daughter has been dating an Australian young man for four years who will probably become part of our family in 1-2 years. [They met on the dance floor of the Solstice in April 2018, while we were cruising in Australia]. He has spoken plenty of words that we either misunderstand or don’t understand, so now we are more ‘seasoned’ at the differences between our English words. 👍🏻

Love it.

reminded me of a cruise about 15 years ago. We are Canadian, and there was a couple from England and a couple from the US.  There was a communication failure between the UK and US couple due to accents and I can only explain it as a different version of English. We spent the week translating when confused looks appeared. After reading your post I just realized how bad it would have been if we had an Aussie couple at the table.

On a cruise to Bermuda first night trying to find our table in the MDR. Located a 10 top with two couples already there.  We sit down and almost immediately one of the ladies said "I guess you are going to get up and leave us, too?"  Without even thinking, I replied "Why, you haven't done anything to pi$$ me off yet." It turns out about 2 minutes before we arrived another couple had sat down, looked around, then stood up and left.  The fifth couple never showed up all week.  Probably the best dinner mates we have had for dinner. We had great conversations.

We had our first suite ever and it was on a Princess ship.  I took a shower the first night and noticed a cord hanging down.  At first I thought it might have been a clothesline that had not retracted but it was not long enough to reach the length of the tub.  So I turned on the water and started my shower. I was trying to get the water temperature just right and for some reason I pulled the rope and it seemed like the water got hotter.  I pulled it a few more times and I swear the water temperature increased again.  Then my wife entered the bathroom and asked if I was ok.  I asked her why and she said the purser desk called and they wanted her to check to see if I was all right. The cord that I was pulling was causing  an alarm to go off at the purser desk.  There was no info anywhere in the bathroom about the cord being for emergency use only.  The next day maintenance placed a decal in the shower.

This didn't happen on a Celebrity ship but I'll recount incident anyway.

I was on a Carnival TP to Hawaii and was using the Locker room in the spa area. In walks in someone in a towel and he's looking around. He sees me and asks, 'Could you get me a robe, I misplaced mine' (I'm Chinese American) I told him I don't work here. He said, 'Oh, I'm sorry' and walked out of the locker room. The guy was John Davidson, who was on the ship as one of the guest entertainers.

On a Carnival cruise out of New Orleans (about 2005), before we left port, guys were throwing beads down from their balconies to girls who were flashing them from lower balconies.
The Captain soon put a stop to it. So did my wife.
