What happens when you get in a fight onboard?

Recommended Posts

During debark today, a couple guys got into it over an elevator. It wasn’t a full brawl, but they pushed, clinched, went to the ground and bottom guy got held until security came. Security took their time with both guys and I walked away before seeing what happened. It made me wonder though: what happens when you get in a fight on the ship?

You get thrown into the brig and depending on how severe the brawl was you get exported at the nearest port 🙂

Next time don't walk away to find out. BasicSailor called it right.

Carnival has a very disciplined approach to these situations.  What happens to each person in the altercation depends on a lot of things and after separating people they try to get as much information from as many people as possible before deciding what to do.  People involved in the altercation are required to complete a report and asked if they want to press charges against the other cruiser.  Any witnesses are asked to also complete reports of what happened.  Security tries to piece together exactly what happened based on these reports and whatever ship security cam footage is available.

I was witness to one where the assailant was next door.  Because the wife also wrote in the report he was physically abusive to her before the external altercation, the husband was taken to the brig and the other person involved was given a warning and cut off from alcohol the duration.

That's all I know.

Saw the same thing once on HAL. It was frightful and life altering.

One guy's walker was dented and the other's cane was scuffed up a bit. Don't think I"ll ever be the same.

I see what you did there! :classic_laugh:  👍

I've seen passengers confined to their cabins over something like this with a security officer outside their door for the duration of the cruise (either the brig was already in use or what they did wasn't serious enough to warrant confinement there). Passengers may be escorted off the ship at the next port and have to make their own way home. And they may be put on the cruise line's no sail list and not be allowed to cruise with that line any longer. What is done depends very much on the circumstances.

My brother in law was cruising with a total of 16 family members when a Russian passenger took offense to their ethnicity and connected a blow to one of the cousins. The cousin was a pro boxer and put the attacker to bed and turned off the lights in the dining room. Every member of the family was told by security to remain in their rooms. In the morning they were put ashore in Puerto Rico. The other group was also put ashore with the suspect in handcuffs. The line (wasn't a Carnival brand) had a zero tolerance policy for any physical altercation. No refunds, find your own way home.

My brother in law said he didn't even get to see the fight, but he enjoyed a few days in Puerto Rico.

Just out of curiosity, what cruise line was it?

We've seen an entire family put ashore in Jamaica, and they were still talking trash. This was on Royal Caribbean.
Interesting to watch the webcams here in Galveston when the ships return. The deck zero gangway often has a couple or more escorted to the awaiting police cruiser with newly acquired handcuffs.
"Went on vacation, wound up on probation..."

Don't cruise with open Felony warrants. Have LEO friends in Galveston, names get ran, you pop up with a warrant and off you go.

I bet he was escorted off the ship by security! Remember, the OP said this happened at an elevator at debark. I’ve seen times when I’d like to have clobbered someone at the elevators during debark! If people would just get off when they’re supposed to things like this wouldn’t happen!

Absolutely, the ship was in its homeport. Besides, they'll need the small brig for the next round of hooligans coming aboard that day 😉

These days almost everyone has a phone and you may well wind up as click bait on YouTube. Moral of this story: don't get into shipboard altercations.

I have had the displeasure of seeing several fights on board. The first thing security does is ask you to not record the events. While several others try to break up the fight. They will even walk up to you and threaten to take your phone. I know some make it to You Tube as I know they don't get them all . Ever see a kid do a back flip in to the lido pool from the deck above lido . Mothers were on him all over the ship.

Spring breakers fight every year one day or another. Blood spattered walls with no security till an hour later. Not a pretty sight.😣

We can be sure Carnival's expensive team of lawyers tell them to do this first. Limiting liability exposure by stopping witnesses recording an event takes precedence to stopping the actual altercation. Besides, they don't want the bad publicity.
