Being the Rick Steves fangirl that I am, I find this site he suggested invaluable for trains - even though it is German it has all the trains in Europe no matter what country you're in as it obviously communicates with all the regional companies!  Thought I would post it for anyone else looking for the same...

For rail travel in Italy, I recommend this website:

Last month the taxi from the port to FCO was 200 Euros.  We didn't have that much cash, so the driver was willing to accept 150 Euros plus $60 US.  Last October the same trip for two persons plus luggage was just 150 Euros.

I'll be honest, when I booked this on board I had no idea about the port distance and expense. Neither did the sales agent mention it. Makes a "free" casino cruise not so free anymore so I'll definitely do some research and find another option. I'd rather cancel than spending 400 bucks for a transfer to/from a port.

We chose a taxi because of time constraints.  The American Airlines flight direct from FCO to DFW is scheduled to depart about 11:00 AM.  We wanted to leave the ship by 7:00, but actually hopped in the taxi about 7:30.  That was cutting it a bit close.  If you have the time, though, there are trains from Civitavecchia to Rome for just a few Euros, then the Leonardo Express train from Rome Termini to FCO is fast and relatively inexpensive.  If you have lots of time on your hands, you should be able to find a bus excursion that hits some of the highlights on the way to dropping you off at the airport.  I'm not sure if X offers them, but other cruise lines do, or you may be able to book one independently.

Am a bit perplexed.  You gambled enough for a "free" cruise.  Did you get free airfare from Tokyo to Italy and return?

As for a transfer, trains go to FCO with one train change for about $30.  A shared van is about $50.  A private limo $200.  Lots of choices.

FWIW last year first class air Europe to Arizona was $1700.  Today over $8000.  A coach seat for a 45 minute flight to LAX went from $79 to over $300.

Depending on where you would be traveling from certainly cheaper alternatives.

It really doesn’t cost that much at all. It’s about a 45 minute drive (that’s how long it took us last month). It can be more expensive if you book private transfers, but I’ve never seen it be $400. Ours was about $150 round trip. You can also take the train which is MUCH cheaper

I didn't lose any money gambling (on that trip) and the airfare was actually just $159 on Qatar Airways with the $500 rebate from Celebrity Air. Plus QCredits to Upgrade. Could also have used miles to book the flight outright for tax charges only.

Just hate long transfers in general and paired with obscene transfer costs due to lack of direct public transport it's even worse. Same reason why that Maldives trip I took a while back won't be repeated. $800 per person just to get to the resort was pretty stiff.

pre-book with Romecabs (or dozens of others offering private transfer) online and it works out approx 130 Euros from port to FCO

Yes I just booked Rome cabs both ways for my 8/26 & 9/5 transfers and each was 140€ and payable to the driver by cash or credit card. I didn’t see the need to prepay which was the other option.

We disembarked the Reflection on June 13- 3 adults, 2 kids.

We had Civitavecchia Shuttle Express waiting to pick us up and take us to FCO.

Our flight was 11am on the dot. We went to disembark about 640/645 and were on the ground (carried our own luggage) by 650, met our shuttle shortly thereafter.

We arrived at FCO at 757am.

We did not make it to the gate until 1004 am for a 1010 am boarding.

Not as much since COVID but I used to fly a LOT and even with kids, we are pretty practiced and know where to go/what to do. I have CLEAR, Global Entry, etc so this is not like I was a bumpkin who never flew out of a foreign airport before. With one BRIEF (3 minute) bathroom stop AFTER security we were still hustling to make our boarding.  We had been promised a reasonably full breakfast (I talked to the concierge directly about this- adults can wait but kids need to eat!) in the Elite departure lounge which was NOT the case, so I waited in line so long to get sandwiches for my kids (they missed breakfast) that I was really pushing it on boarding time.

FCO was an absolute zoo.  (We departed from O'Hare for contrast...)

I would never fly out of there with less than 3 hours before my flight and even then it was clearly close for us. The shuttle company told us we could take the 8am shuttle, not 7am, and I pushed back and I am glad I did- there is NO way we would've been on our flight.

We were even pushed ahead of the big line in a couple cases due to "bambinos" <14 years old... if they had not been there I do wonder what would've happened, we'd probably still be in passport control.

I guess if they kick people out before 9am then I can just as well book a flight ex FCO at 10:50am.

Really would recommend for FCO.    If just traveling within Europe maybe 12:00 earliest and that could still be tough.    If flying to America I would recommend 3-4 hours after you arrive at airport

I called Celebrity today and booked a transfer with them. $70 per way which is rather reasonable. They offer both a city pickup as well as airport pickups.

That's the same as we paid last Autumn, but the rate was 200 Euros last month.

I think you were fleeced. We just paid €130 euros transfer private taxi for 2.

We thought it was a bit much, also.  There were about a half dozen cabs at the taxi stand when we came out of the port terminal, though, and none of them were willing to offer a better price.  We didn't book a taxi in advance this time because of a bad experience the last time we cruised to Civitavecchia.  We had booked one last November for about 130 Euros.  We waited for him curbside for about a half hour past the scheduled time.  He never showed up and did not answer his phone when we tried to call him.  We ended up grabbing a cab from the taxi stand for 150 Euros.  This time around it was 200 Euros.  We were short on time to get to the airport this time, so we really didn't have much room to negotiate.

Is that $70 per person?

Right. Of course if you're traveling with 2+ people then taking a cab/UBER is a no brainer as you'd pay the same by purchasing individual transfer tickets.

Here is the total for the rt transfer (1 pax):

If you find yourself in Civitavecchia again. I would highly recommend Rome Cabs. Very professional company, have never been let down by them. Usually large  Mercedes and very professional drivers. You can book and check prices on the website.

Hi, what is the latest time we can expect to disembark Reflection at Civitavecchia in September ? 9.00am/10.00am ?? We have an late afternoon flight out of Rome Fiumicino and trying to avoid kicking our heels for 6 or 7 hours in the airport

no point going back into Rome as we are spending 3 nights pre-cruise

anything to do around the airport ??

Thanks

Not Reflection, but on Beyond today we had the last departure tag which was 8.30 departure.  But we were asked to depart our rooms by 7.30.

There is a Hilton attached to the terminal. About 15 min walk. You could check if they do a day room rate

I’ll find out on September 5 if a 7:15 am Rome cab pick up from the port for my 11:05 am American flight is sufficient. By then I hope things improve some.

It's your call, but if you're checking luggage, I'd strongly suggest bumping that up just a few minutes...

What’s your suggestion , 6:45 am?

11am is a very risky flight from FCO. Get picked up  as early as possible, as I said before, the airports are crazy busy at the moment, understaffed, and slow to process anything. You may be lucky and have plenty of time, but please dont be complacent, get there as early as you can, even things like walking to your boarding gate are long at FCO. Sometimes a bus is needed to the plane. We have cruised out of Civitavecchia many times, and dont schedule anything before 1pm anymore. 11am is possible, if you are lucky with traffic, and queues, but dont coast any stage.

I would agree, we have had many flights from fumancino. Most flights at 12.15 onwards with private transfer from the ship with Rome Cabs  at 7.00 am with very little time to spare at the airport. No time to eat drink or shop. This was in ‘normal’ times so goodness knows what it’s like now. It’s a very busy airport.
