Banning smoking in casinos anytime soon seems unlikely

Smokers are more valuable in the casino.   They need the smokers in there.  They drink more and gamble more and  stay longer  than the tea-totaller non smokers do.     😁

They stay longer because they aren't bothered by the smoke.    Non-smokers would stay longer if there was no smoke as we observed on HOTS last fall when smoking was banned.

To repeat the OP's first fact:

From Michael Bayley:

"Every, I would say every couple of years, we do test this and we take one or two or three ships and we ban smoking in the casino. And the result is less people go in the casino and that's the reality of it," he explained.

😁

Don't you see an ethical problem with that - placing corporate profit over the health and well being of cruisers and staff?

Not at all.   You could say the same thing about serving liquor or fattening foods .. or gambling itself, for that matter.     It's up to each individual to police themselves.    And as for staff .. they know going into their jobs on board that they will be around smoking.

Yes, but if I drink or eat fattening foods or lose $1,000, it doesn't impact your health at all.

I do think the idea of smoking and non smoking casinos should be looked into.   Granted the non smoking one should be smaller.    Seems like they could carve out space somewhere in these monster ships for a non smoking option.

Non-smoking should be smaller when close to 90% of people don't smoke?   Finding a machine in the non-smoking section on a full ship can be impossible.

Yes.   Michael says so.   He agrees with me.   Bigger casino for the smokers. ☺️

We encountered something like this several years ago, I think on the Sapphire Princess about 2007 or so. The casino was full on smoking, but they also had video table games, Vegas style, in one of the  non-smoking entertainment lounges. We spent a lot of time ( and $) playing, sipping adult beverages and watching the entertainment , when it was on- the lounge was available whether or not the entertainment was going. We thought this was a great idea, but haven't seen anything similar in several cruises since.

Considering obesity kills more people than smoking, Windjammer and free ice cream is the real killer here.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

In which case why has he banned it on all Celebrity ships?

Maybe because Celebrity charges so much more for their cruises, they don't need to supplement profits with casino revenue (same with DCL that has no casins).

Two points:

1.If you look at all costs, ( Tips, Internet, drinks, etc)  Celebrity  comes out close or sometimes even less than RCL  for similar itins.

2. It is my impression after several Celebrity cruises that they generally appeal to a different demographic than RCL, overall. Even in the designated smoking areas we saw few smokers. And the (non-smoking) casino was very active.

The majority of the ship is non-smoking. There are dedicated smoking areas. Are you telling me that a smoker won't gamble if they are forced to smoke in an outdoor designated area? They still cruised didn't they? I call total B.S. For the health of their employees and majority of passengers the casino should also be smoke free. Period.

Our local Indian casino has been smoke free since the pandemic started and guess what, that place is packed as if smoking never existed. People comply or make alternative accommodations.

You may be right, but every time I price out our cruise (suites) Celebrity is much more expensive.  And I do agree about the demographics.  One day we may try Celebrity, but not in the the next two years - it's all RCCL.

Yes, less people standing around smoking in the smoking room....oops I meant Casino 😜

Kidding but really not. On longer 10+ Cruises I do they refuel 1-2 times and with Open Deck Ban the only place on Ship to Smoke that day is inside the Casino

When YOU become the CEO of your cruise line, then I guess you can make that decision.

Until then, you are correct when you say, "comply or make alternative accommodations".

If you "call total B.S.", then for what possible other reason do you think they continue to allow smoking?
