EWR to Financial District

I checked Dial 7 and Carmel Limo for ride from EWR to lower Manhattan hotel, two passengers. Looks like $44 - 52. Seems OK and pre-booked, how would this compare with Uber / Lyft.

Keep in mind that the "limo" in Carmel Limo is somewhat misleading. These are older livery cars that are now operated by third party contractors much like Uber/Lyft and makes sense that they're priced about the same. Not a knock on them, I used to use them all the time, but just don't expect a pristine black car to show up.

If you want something more than that using an app like Blacklane allows you to prebook a true black car service but it also costs a bunch more.

Personally I would just Uber-- there's always something close by. It sometimes takes longer when you are trying to find your specific Dial7/Carmel driver than to just hit the app and find the driver showing up outside.

Good advice, thanks. I was thinking pre-booked might be easier to find, but, as you say, there will be lots of Uber.

another thing to keep in mind is that EWR is in New Jersey and the Financial District is in NYC. Sometimes they can be an extra out of state surcharge added in the taxi price

There is also a charge for tolls,is there not ?

At the Holland Tunnel $13.75 for peak times and $11.75 off peak-- assuming the Uber has EZPass which they nearly all universally do. Will just be added to the overall bill.

Should be similar. Uber prices fluctuate based on supply and demand, hence their notorious surge pricing.

You can get Uber price estimates from this page on their website  https://www.uber.com/global/en/price-estimate/  or you can use their smartphone app.

Yes, be careful when there are a lot of people to up the demand or public holidays! I was charge triple the usual fair on Thanksgiving.

We will go Uber, Monday Sep 19, hotels are pricey that date. Don't know why.

Aside from weather getting close to ideal for tourists, there is usually a lot of fashion activity in September, U S Open usually ends the first week. Generally September and around Christmas are costliest hotel periods due to demand.

One hotel is $417 for Sept 19, $341 Sep 12, $246 Sep 26. So, a week earlier and a week later is quite different. When we booked this cruise and Covid cancelled two years ago, the hotel price went down as we approached the date. Not this year 😞 Just one night so no problem.

Unless you have your heart set on one particular hotel, also look around at other spots in Manhattan such as moving further north to Midtown. Private events that aren't published can cause spikes like that at certain properties-- its possible some bank is having their folks in for a few days over those dates and they have a large block at that particular hotel. The hotel is selling to the public high to either dissuade them to book in a sort of "take it or leave it".

Thats the beauty of Manhattan-- even if you are tied to one specific brand or corporate family of hotels there are usually several options at different price points on any given night.

Now looking for a rustic Italian restaurant 🙂

You are most likely going to want to head further uptown to eat-- the Financial District has gotten better over the years but it is not known for its diverse or quality restaurants. The area becomes quite dead after working hours and on the weekends compared to the rest of Manhattan.
