Your gonna get a lot of judgmental people that say no way should you wear shorts in the MDR.  But it’s been documented that some have been able to wear shorts in there.
So that said. The rules say one thing.  But other things are happening.
I’m a shorts guy.   Never wear pants.    So I’m on the go shorts team. Lol

The official answer from Princess dress code is no shorts for dinners. We have seen diners being turned away several times at the door because of the shorts. However, there are always exception. If you are in the Club class, you can just about wear anything from shorts to T-shirts to get into your exclusive dining area. We have seen diners in shorts, tank tops and sandals get seated immediately in the Club class dining area but not regular diners in the main dining room.

The dress code clearly states that shorts are not allowed. No one can tell you whether the dress code will be enforced on any given night on your cruise. If eating in the MDR is important to you, I’d wear pants.

Heck, just bring one pair of  long black pants and wear them on nights you have dinner in main dining room. Easy peasy.

Absolutely - how hard can it be ?

If you are incapable of wearing a pair of long pants for a couple  of hours a night, then go to the buffet, thus avoiding public embarrassment when turned way from the MDR. Or is that a hill you really want to battle for?
