Extra CAS point after a “no show”

Careful, on the other thread about making pinnacle some take extreme offense if you suggest that some people work the system to get points for status. A couple of the pins got very feisty about it.  😂😂.  Meanwhile I’ve heard many stories from many pinnacles and diamond plus folks about working the system to maximize points.  We all know that happens even if we didn’t hear the first hand stories because it is normal human behavior.

In the world of airline loyalty programs there are the concept of "mileage runs" where people fly certain flights just to earn status.

 

The primary difference is that airlines require annual qualification and for many frequent business travelers there can be more incentive to level up for certain perks like free upgrades to first class.  

 

One similarity between cruise lines and airlines... if your butt isn't on board you don't get status credit for that booking.  

 

If cruise lines awarded points for booking a cruise but not sailing the cruise then folks would find the cheapest last minute deals and book them just to get the points.  It doesn't work that way.  Sleep in a Royal bed on board a ship or no points for you.  

 

Extra points for a no show cabin mate is purely YMMV.

Our friend booked for two and paid for two for our April cruise. The friend couldn't go so she was a no show. Friend, as well as us, expected her to get 2 points for sailing solo. She only received 1 point. She has called 3x and emailed twice. Same answer every single time... you must book solo to receive double points. The kicker was she booked and paid for both to begin with. She would have had to reprice the cruise at current rates and pay double. She is 2 points short of D now. We cruise in a couple of weeks again which she booked solo this time. I told her to try the Loyalty ambassador onboard just for grins to see if she would give her the points or possibly D status after the second day. I know that is not policy and points are earned after the cruise but it won't hurt to try.

Agree. I'm one of the few that does not give Cruise Line extra $. No Drink packages, Shore Excursions, Casino or T-Shirts, always SOLO...

Sounds like there was a glitch in the automated system that gave solo points to a cabin mate after someone no-shows. I guess they “fixed the glitch.”

Another difference is you can earn miles/points with credit cards.  Can’t do that with Royal or others cruise lines that I know of.   
 

Also, many airlines  (or is it all) have moved to systems where it is based on $ spent and not just miles flown (or segments flown).  
 

Royal does this in a crude way via double points with suites.  But the range in cost for suites is very significant depending on time of year, ship, type of suite, etc..  Also Royal doesn’t give you more points if you spend a bunch onboard.  So diamond + in a cheap cabin who spends nothing onboard get the same points as a someone in a balcony cabin who spend thousands extra onboard (drink packages, pictures, specialty dining, beach bungalows that cost more than average cruises, etc.).  
 

It’s interesting  they don’t offer some points to encourage more onboard spending because that is the only thing that can make them profitable.   They don’t profit from just getting people booked.  They need lots of extra spending to make a profit on a given cruise.  With airlines, the business travelers who boom last minute at high fares typically get more points for a given flight.

I've always thought it would be nice if it worked like hotel reward programs where all of your spending earned points.

People keep saying there are too many folks reaching the upper tiers so it is unlikely RCI would offer another double points promotion. Then people start thinking up ways that RCI can offer even more points. I don't get it.🤔

Follow up question: If you book solo and are fortunate enough to find a rate with 0% single supplement, do you get double points?  The FAQ’s on the CAS page specifically says you must book solo and pay the single supplement to get double points. But there are a few 50, 25, and even 0% supplemental fares out there now. Looks like they’re available on a few repositioning cruises. 
 

Second follow up question: if you book solo and pay the 100% supplement on a double occupancy cabin, could you later add a cabin mate? Say like a week or two before sailing.

I booked/sailed 3 cruises solo with no single supplement in Oct, Dec, Dec under the double points promo.

 

Received 4x points ((1 + 1 solo) * 2) per night for each cruise.

 

Which cruises are you seeing the 50, 25, 0 supplements?

I've read thru all these posts and dont see a one stating the reason solo would book a invisible pax. They do it all the time.

 

I just clicked thru inside cabin for 2 people. Gty price and you pick. For reasons no one knows solo cannot book gty. I love gty but rcl says no. Here are the prices for 2 pax. $100 x 2 extra to pick a cabin. Saving $200. It happens all the time. Solo books a invisible person who will be a no show. To save money.

 

The question to me is valid but no one seems to know the answer or even can figure out why people do it lolol.

 

Price booked as a couple ... price solo. Note solo doesnt get offered the gty rate.

That's what we all want to know if there is a concrete rule. If so then I'll book a gty and put my sister in the cabin and she can be a no show. Lol.

 

So far no one seems to say this is the rule.

That FAQ is referring to the studio cabins, pay no attention

 

I've added a body to a solo booking. They only charged me the taxes and fees even though I only paid the 150% DP350 Fare to begin with

Automatic on last cruise in June. Wife and I were booked in a balcony on Indy. Booked prior to shutdown. L&S'd twice. Wife couldn't go, so she no showed. Points showed up (4*3=12) 6 days after departure.

 

This spring, Laura was the replacement passenger in a GS. Her companion was a no show. Never intended to go, actually. Post cruise she had the typical points for a suite during dbl point promo (4*7=28)  I called C&A, and it was fixed to 42 (6*7) in 10 minutes.

 

In the past I've no showed 3 or 4 times. None intentional, and they were all corrected or done correct to begin with.

 

Just never been a problem for us.
