Yes, for cruise ship passengers, Canada requires a test:

From the website  "you can show a picture of your negative home test on your phone, or present the actual negative test itself."

That's a curious one ..... are you supposed to take a picture of your test result with your phone??? I don't think they want you bringing the physical test strip with you. Or maybe they do ...... 🤔

Accepted Tests
Guests can now take advantage of at-home antigen tests (even unsupervised ones!) to satisfy their pre-cruise requirement. Proof of a negative test can be the printed or digital results, a clear photo of your self-test result, or your actual self-test in hand.

From the Royal website:

Starting with September 5th, for U.S. cruises that don’t visit Canada or Bermuda:

  • Vaccinated guests won’t have to take a pre-cruise test on cruises that are shorter than 10 nights.
  • Unvaccinated guests age 5 and up will need to test within 3 days before boarding, regardless of cruise length.
  • We will begin accepting results from self-administered home tests. See full testing details

We just came off six days on Allure.  I wish they'd done this earlier.  Living in Southern Ontario and driving to Florida, it was a pain getting a tests and driving to port.

Figures Canada would be the lone holdout and figures my next cruise has to stop there for just a couple hours to comply with the Jones Act.  I have thoughts about Canada that would lead me to be banned from this forum so I'll refrain.

Here's the new testing requirements for Sept. 5th or after NOT visiting Bermuda or Canada:

Source: https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/what-tests-are-accepted-where-to-submit-the-results

Accepted Tests for Guests Sailing from North America (U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada)

Below are details about which tests are accepted to board the ship. The type of test you need for your cruise, as well as the testing window, can vary depending on your vaccination status. If you are unclear on test requirements your for your cruise, visit our main COVID-19 testing FAQ to learn more.

  • The test you take can be professionally administered by a health professional, such as a doctor or pharmacist, or you can use a home test kit. Home test kits for these sailings are not required to be administered under live video supervision.
  • You will present the negative test result at the time of boarding. You can show it in the form of a printout, an email, or an app screen from the test provider. Or you can show a picture of your negative home test on your phone, or present the actual negative test itself.

So here in uk. You order a test. The test has a unique serial number which is linked to the purchase. Take test and upload a pic to the testers website showing negative and serial number. Certificates are emailed though. But it never knows who took the test or how.....so pointless. I guess its for insurance purposes.

But what about the over the counter free tests from the chemist's? we still have some of those so we could use them and take a picture of the negative result.

Agreed this is odd. Sailing Sep 18 which includes stops in Canada so need to test. Have appointment setup with OnPoint on the 16th. I guess I can cancel that now and get a refund. How you present proof of the test should be interesting. I'll stay tuned.

I just booked and went back and website said non refundable.

Truthfully, I don't mind the testing part so much as the PAYING part. It's an additional $80-100 CAD (per person) just to do the antigen test! Really wish there was an option to do the test for FREE, so either they swab us before we board, or have a testing facility just for cruise passengers. Come on, Canada!

Pre-entry testing is not required

Pre-entry tests are not required for fully vaccinated travellers entering Canada by land, air or water. You must still use ArriveCAN within 72 hours before your arrival to Canada.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated children under the age of 12 are not required to provide a valid pre-entry test result, if they are accompanying a fully vaccinated adult.

Children who are less than 5 years old are not required to test, regardless of their vaccination status.

Just got an updated H&S protocols and it says that unvaxxed 5 and older are welcomed to sail.  Am I reading it right.  Not sure if this was brought out in many of the topics.

My big concern is the last sentence of "vaccination Recommended" which asks to disclose status of at check to maintain a highly vaxxed onboard population.  This seems a bit late and problematic since you check-in 30-45 prior to sail.

Updated Protocols: U.S. Departures 9‐Nights or less

Below find our updated protocols for U.S. departures that are 9 nights or less — excluding sailings to Bermuda and Canada. Should there be any changes, we are committed to keeping you informed.

All Guests, All Aboard
Beginning September 5th, 2022 we are welcoming all guests, regardless of vaccination status, on most U.S. departures.

Vaccination Recommended
If eligible, we recommend that guests joining us be fully vaccinated against COVID‐19. While vaccination is not required, we kindly ask you disclose your status during check-in to ensure we maintain a highly vaccinated onboard population.

Testing
Pre-cruise
Unvaccinated guests aged 5 and older must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days of our sail date. Vaccinated guests, regardless of age, no longer need to test for sailing lengths of 9 nights or less.

Accepted Tests
Guests can now take advantage of at-home antigen tests (even unsupervised ones!) to satisfy this requirement. Proof of a negative test can be the printed or digital results, a clear photo of your self-test result, or your actual self-test in hand. To learn more about our accepted tests, visit our FAQ.
