On my recent Grandiosa cruise, a passenger was kicked from the restaurant...

...for wearing shorts.

He tried to walk into the restaurant on Gala Night with shorts, but the Maitre'D refused him entry.  He argued with the Maitre'D for a bit, but was not allowed inside.

Somehow, he managed to sneak inside wearing the shorts.  The Maitre'D found him seated at a table near us and escorted him out of the restaurant.

I'm not a particularly stuffy or formal person, but I actually appreciated that on Gala Night.

Im so glad this happened.   Why is it so hard  to put on a pair of pants vs shorts?  Sadly its all about its my vacation and I will wear what I want,....blah blah  blah

I once saw a woman in a t-shirt and scruffy track suit bottoms on formal night in the MDR on a Royal Caribbean cruise! I nearly choked on my lobster I was that taken aback!! 😳

No shorts on MDR for dinner is probably among the few rules they may have these days, and I praise them to actually enforce it. Allowing 1rst night when luggage can possibly not have been delivered is a thing, allowing all and a pair of boots everyday is just another thing. While mainstream cruising (European 4* land hotel standards) is pretty much for everyone, that doesn't translate on let the MDR to be the next door McDonald's outlet! Going on the MDR for dinner should be at least like going on a nice restaurant in town. Relatively casual? Sure! That's the way the society is going! But, at least making an effort to understand in what context one is!

Good grief...Wasn't formal night  but a man and a woman sat with me and my mom the 1st evening.  He showed up in bib overalls.  We changed our table the next day.

I. LOVE. THIS. It's not too much to ask for putting on pants and if that's the dress code then it SHOULD be enforced. The fact that the Maitre'D went back in and kicked him out is AWESOME! Makes me want to cruise MSC even more. We've sailed 8 cruise lines so far and MSC is 'on the list.'

Several years ago a woman walked into the elevator on Divina in a huff.

Her husband was dressed in workout clothes (tank top and scruffy shorts) to go to the gym after having breakfast in the MDR.

He was denied entrance.

It didn't help when I told her the dress code in the cabins clearly stated what the appropriate wear was for breakfast in the MDR.

Then she came out with the famous whine "Well, on Carnival...."

ROFL!  We would have immediately excused ourselves, returned to the host desk, and ask to be seated elsewhere.

You sir, are "A man for all seasons" ("a man who is ready to cope with any contingency and whose behaviour is always appropriate to every occasion. Robert Whittington applied this description to the English statesman and scholar Sir Thomas More ").

Well, I have sailed on Carnival and I have not observed such dress in the MDR as the OP described.

It's all about "me, me, me, me! among some of those who walk among us.
