If you win big at the casino, do you have to pay taxes on it either on the ship to some country (not sure who it would be) or to Canada when you file your taxes here?

Canadians pay tax on casino winnings immediately in the USA. I think it starts at around 2000USD. I once won 2200 and after taxes received 1250.00. You get a receipt so you can claim the income and taxes back on your tax submission once you’re in Canada. But it’s a PITA so I didn’t bother. On board a ship I’m not sure. But when Ive organized group Slot Pull I arrange for a US resident yo collect any winnings to avoid any hassle.

I wonder if the US resident has to declare the winnings ?

Do you win a lot on a slot pull ?

When I won it was back when coins were dispensed  from the machine & no one asked  for any I.D. when I  turned them in for bills

The IRS expects U.S. residents to pay tax on any worldwide income. And they define gambling earnings as income. Hey, they have to do something to pay off some of their national debt which  has grown to a record $31.12 trillion this month. 💰💰💰💰

Canadians winning on cruise ships do not pay taxes. Show your drivers license to prove you're a Canadian resident and fill out a form W something that allows the cruise ship to hand you all your slot machine winnings. Americans have the option of the cruise ship withholding their taxes or providing their TIN or SSI and paying taxes at the end of the year themselves. Providing they did not lose it all in the machine later.

In Vegas, as a Canadian, for a handpay of $1200 or more they holdback 30% and give you a form (W something?). At the start of the next year you can claim it back if you can prove enough loses.  I have done it a few times and it isn’t too hard yourself, with help of information online.

On the ship, Celebrity for sure from my experience, you just prove you are Canadian and they give you the full winnings.

Presumably one has to remember to declare winnings over $10K upon disembarking as well as subsequent entry into Canada?

you just need to tell them you have $10K   no need to say  they are winnings ...is there?

The reason they ask is they are looking for illegal activity.

Gambling is not illegal. Winning is not illegal.  Lottery and casino winning is not taxed in Canada.  Not clear why you would try to hide it.

You for sure have to declare you are carrying more than $10K when entering Canada. I did that coming home from Vegas. They looked at it and asked how I got it. I showed them my handpay sheet from the casino and was on my way. No issues. The guy was funny though, mentioned he thought $10K would look bigger! As someone else said, just watching for proceeds of crime. I would just have proof of the win with you.

I don’t know what the limit is. But I think yes. Casinos at Sea is a name that comes up that has perks for members. I don’t know much about them, though I assume they do accumulate the amount their members spend and offer rewards that are non-taxable. One of the slot pulls we did we cashed out at 860.00. It was fun. We were 20 people so we all got back more than we paid. 15.00 for 3 pulls. Some slot pulls cost 20.00pp. 5.00 of that goes into a pot for the person who gets the highest score. I’m sure other groups have hit jackpots.

Bringing back more than 10K into Canada is easy peasy, and there is ZERO to pay etc.  Just make 100% sure to declare it properly.  Answer a few questions and away you go.  One of the nice things about being a Canadian and gambling on cruise ships is no taxation on handpays.  Just produce identification and you are set.  If you involved in a group pull let others know you are Canadian.
