Hello everyone I’ve been very frustrated with this app for Princess myself this is the first cruise I’ve been on that I had to do this I can’t tell you how many phone calls I had to make an asked my travel agent questions and when I called the one 800 number for help from princess all they did was transfer talk to the girl on the phone she was extremely rude and abrupt and Transfer me for one person to the other I still don’t have luggage tags to print out for my cruise coming soon so I will just go to the terminal and get them there instead of making things easier they’re making things more complicated and when I talk to the girl on the phone she was extremely rude and abrupt and fresh I said this is no way to plan and have a vacation and she had the nerve to tell me you’re not on vacation yet  . Everyone doesn’t have a phone and I am in my early 60s and I’m not familiar with all this technology and I don’t have any children or grandchildren or anyone else to ask for help it’s very frustrating and I’ve spent too much time on it it is not computer friendly at all or easy to navigate yes I don’t think we should have to use it if we choose not to I don’t need big brother on the cruise ship knowing every move I make where I’m going that’s just another way for them to do marketing to see where you’re going and what you’re doing and spending your money on another invasion of privacy but now I see all the cruise lines are trying to go to this new technology probably to save manpower . But it’s wrong on so many levels I am glad to see that other people feel the same way I do not that I want anyone else to experience a moment of problems but this is not working just another way to try to track people and save money

Hey uncle boo,

just like in the old days—-

you can go on your computer, log in to your Princess Personalizer, go to your Travel Summary/ luggage tags, and print them off, at home.

yes!!! The tags can still be printed off your computer.

there is also a link there to complete a lot of your check in, instead of using the app.

Princess reps will help at the Terminal if you cannot do it yourself.

enjoy your cruise.

The Medallion App is a total joke.  Last three Princess cruises is has not worked except for opening the cabin door, and that was problematic.  Period.

The App check-in "requirement" is simply another was Princess is placing more onus on the passenger than on the crew.

See my post to uncle boo.

there is help available

We do not like the app or what it does. Do not like the fact that  Princess Cruises is tracking and targeting all guests. The information they collect can be sold to third parties. The app is a benefit to Princess Cruises and a cutting of customer service to the guests.

We will never wear the medallions, no reason to show off our Princess Captain's Circle level.  Our medallions will stay in a RFD blocking wallet which causes confusion and issues for Princess Cruises. But will stop most of their data collection.

Princess needs to stop trying to make the cruise line into a self-service fast food model. Princess Cruises was built on great customer service and they need to bring that back...They need to recognize the simple fact that loyal long term guests make them money. Respect your guests.

Hope any of these ANTI-MEDALLION folks do not plan to take a cruise to Australia -- even a port call.

To apply for an Australian ETA, one is required to use the Australian App and scan info etc.  One does have the option to apply for  an Australian VISA instead of ETA, pay $150, and get an approval in 3 to 4 weeks instead of 10 minutes for an ETA. It is time even for the older folks to change attitudes because other cruise lines will soon go to the Medallion route. Sorry if this post offends a lot of posters.

What?   A Princess Medallion is required to get an Australian ETA?   Really?

Do you mean to get an Australian ETA you need to use a cell phone or other electronic device?  Same for ArriveCAN.

🤣

Is it possible to use a desk top computer to get that ETA or is the tiny cell phone screen the only option?

Yes -- one has to use a "mobile' device that can download and use the Australian ETA APP. Desktop will not do. I did NOT say that one needs a Princess Medallion. Some have comprehension issues!

I use an IPad and it is definitely not "TINY". I also read the most recent novels downloaded from my library to my IPad. Yes -- I am also in the senior category age-wise. My last post on this topic. Thank You.

Your frustrations are coming in loud but not clear.  I am going to try to answer a few of your concerns (that have been well documented on many threads).

YOU do not need to have a phone (unless traveling to Australia).  YOU can take all of your documents with you to the port and someone will check you in.

YOU can print out your luggage tags by signing in to your web based Personalizer.

YOU can ask for a old fashion cruise card to open your cabin door.  Big Brother won't be watching you then.  But neither will YOU get the benefits of the medallion (different from Medallion app).

I hope you will enjoy your cruise once on board.

Tx Cr8tiv1 for simplifying it for us newbs 🙂  When you mention missing the benfits of using the MED, would there be any hardship with dining?  I was hoping to prebook my anytime dining with a shared table of other guests each night I'm not concerned if its the same people/wait staff as Im fairly happy to mix n mingle - but want to ensure that declining the medallion will not create any big barriers that way.  Thanks, much

Lol…. This exactly what I was thinking as I was reading this thread.

Truth is, this is the way technology is going.

All my doctor visits are scheduled on phone app. Medication refills done on phone apps. I even have to use my phone to securely log on to my work computer. Last week used the phone to renew my drivers license through DMV.

Trust me, I’m not trying to convince anyone here that they have to use apps. But regardless if you like it or not, more and more businesses are going to convert to phone apps.

Cheers

Cruise Critic posters are generally experienced and come with great explanations.  I hope my inputs fall into that category.

Princess would ease a lot of anxiety if they would not use similar terminologies.  There are two SEPARATE devices.

The Medallion (little round thing) uses INTRAnet on the ship

* opens your cabin door

* gets you on/off the ship

* identifies you when you approach the bar/MDR

* lets you purchase things in the stores

* lets you play on the slot machines in the casino and on tables.

* lets your friends locate you when you are out and about on the ship

The Medallion Class App has three (or more) purposes

1.  To get you registered for your cruise (which you can do some of it on the web-based personalizer).

2.  When you are onboard (INTRAnet), you can use your mobile device (phone/tablet/computer) to order room service, to order drinks, to make dinner reservations, to book shore excursions, to purchase a Future Cruise Deposit, connect to the INTERnet, find your friends, play casino games $$$, etc.

3.  When you are off the ship (using your home INTERnet), you can your your mobile devices to fill in your registration forms, upload passport, enter your charge card information, Dine My Way, order accessibility equipment, pick your arrival time, view deck plans, etc.

I am sure someone with expertise will be able to give more details about how the medallion (coin) works.  From my simple understanding, it really doesn't contain significant personal information.  But I could be wrong.

As for your question about making table reservations.  Again, it is my understanding that you can do that with your television once on board.  I'm not sure if you need a medallion to view the muster drill video or use the menu on the television for other personalized selections.

Trust me, I am a very private person but had no fears about using the Medallion coin while on board.  I liked being addressed by my name.  I liked being able to find a lost/wandering cabin mate.  My medallion coin is attached to a clip that attaches to my pants.  It was most useful when I had my hands full with a cup of hot tea and a plate of peanut butter cookies and the door unlocked.

Strangely enough I lost my medallion on a cruise and instead of using the facility to find out where it was so I could retrieve it when I reported it at the pursers desk they issued me with a new one?????????

I guess you didn't appreciate Arizona Wildcat's little joke. 🙃 So it isn't necessary to use a cell phone to do the Australian ETA?

At first I did not like the Tracking me aspect.

However, that would have been handy when we had to stand in a long line 2 hours while the Japanese police came on board to remove a few passengers who chose to hide out on the ship & skip immigration.  In the blazing sun we watched them & their luggage get removed.

Per Australia gov web site

https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder/visit

Subclass 601

Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)

Visit Australia as often as you wish in a 12-month period. Stay up to 3 months each time you enter Australia.
  • There is no Visa Application Charge (VAC). There may be an application service charge of AUD20.
  • You cannot apply for an ETA online, or through an agent or airline at this time. Some travellers can apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app.
  • If you want to stay for more than 3 months consider a different visa, such as the Visitor visa (subclass 600)

It might sound like I'm splitting hairs here, but what's required here is an app.  The app does not have to be accessed only by a cell phone.  Our friend says she uses her Ipad.  I assume there is also an android application for other devices like that.  Some of the problem inexperienced users are having is trying to do everything on a tiny cell phone screen.  I don't think everyone understands that apps can work on other mobile devices that might be easier to navigate.  "Phone app" is sometimes a misleading term.

Of course, Princess has now provided a web site for those who can't handle the phone app.  I also see that Australia is saying the app is the only way at this time.  Who knows what the future will bring?

You are correct.  A mobile device is either a tablet or a mobile (cell) phone.  The Medallion Class app will work on a tablet and/or phone.  The web-base check in will not do everything that a mobile device app is capable of achieving.  Close, but no cigars

Then medallallion does not need to contain a lot of information. It just needs to be able to ID you. It could be with a simple number code. But that simple number code gives much more information than just the number.

They use the tracking system to log everything you do on the ship, anyplace you go, what you drink, how much you drink, the times that you do this, the places, track all your purchases, track how long you spend in different parts of the ship. And all this information builds profiles of you.   If you go to the med center, and get medications that will be tracked.

And under the terms of use Princess Cruises is free to sell this information to anyone they want. Let's say for example  that because the stairs were wet you slipped and fell and had major medical issues.  They could use your pattern of drinking as a defence.

No one can be a private person if they allow this tracking to happen.

And how do you know this ? I accept that in real time they can tell where you are, but is the information actually stored ?

How do you avoid the cctv that covers all the public areas of the ship? You can be traced just as easily by that, or do you wear a disguise when sitting in bars,  restaurants etc ?

I would suggest you do the online version of the App.  Go to your cruise personalizer. Click on checkin…you will see the buttons to download the App , look just below…It says Try our website version…small blue letters. Click on that.

Enter your Name date and booking number. Where you can do most of the checkin.

Can the online version also be used to select an arrival time? Or is that only possible with the App?

Not on my Amazon Fire tablet or my Nook tablet.

I do not need a cell phone app to make a doctor appointment. Using a land line, I can call the doctor's office. As an alternative, I could make the appoint with a desktop computer.

I do not need a cell phone app to get medication refills. I can use a land line to call the pharmacy to do this.

I do not need a cell phone app to renew my driver's license. I can do this on my desktop computer.

I guess if I was in your work situation, I would need a cell phone to log onto a work computer. Since I do not own a cell phone, I would expect my employer to provide an alternate method (or provide a cell phone for me).

Yes, you can do that once on board, but no reservations might be still available for the time you would like to dine.

No. But, as we all know, it’s not imperative at this time.

Eventually, maybe.

And all one has to do if stopped in line up is say they needed help with app.
