It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (on QM2)

We sometimes get questions asking when the Christmas decorations start going up on the Cunard ships. Today is the day on QM2 this year. The large tree is yet to make an appearance in the Grand Lobby but quite a few trees and other holiday decorations have started going up today in various venues around the ship. Here is one of the elves decorating a tree in the Commodore Club this afternoon.

I will miss the Christmas spirit on board this year, though in the past it was on one or other of the Queens!  Spirit covers not only the atmosphere no doubt! I hope everyone on board as the festive atmosphere grows will have a lovely time especially over Christmas and New Year. Let's hope 2023 sees a better year for all than 2022.

Is it a real tree?

I believe all the decorations throughout the ship are artificial. The tree in the Grand Lobby was assembled from several sections with the lights already strung. The decorations were meticulously applied by hand over several hours using tall ladders.

Later yesterday afternoon or early evening the scene in the Grand Lobby was completed with the addition of the Wind in the Willows characters, packages under the tree and blue lighting from above.

And presumably in the Q1s and Q2s. You will have to invite yourself in the spirit of enquiry.

We are at Laguardia airport now awaiting our flight home. The crew areas have additional trees as well. We asked one of the decarators a couple days ago if they were putting up any more trees and she said they were putting them up in the crew areas that day. Did not attempt to invite myself to see those either, even if it were only in the spirit of enquiry. 🙂

  • 2 weeks later...

Cunard posted a video on their facebook page today of the large Christmas tree being decorated on QM2 this year as their "fifth day of Christmas" gift. The first six seconds of the video show a rapid time lapse of what the process of setting up the tree in the Grand Lobby looked like on November 28th.

So they still trot out the rodents and amphibian for Christmas?  What’s the rationale?
