That’s what I was thinking. I’d take it in a heart beat and not complain, but I understand it’s not as easy for others to get time off, corral family members, etc as it is for some people.

I'd want more money back than 50%, but it's better than nothing. I usually spend about $6,000 "all-in" on a Caribbean cruise for 2 people. A 50% refund on a cruise that I would easily take again the next year would be sufficient for me. But next year I'm spending about $30,000 for an international cruise (most of that is airfare and hotels in 2 different countries). The cruise itself is supposed to stop at 6 ports that I would likely never visit on a land vacation, and would probably not book again anytime in the near future, so if it only made it to one or two ports and then sat in the middle of the ocean for 8 days and they only gave me back half my money, I wouldn't be very happy. All that other money I'm spending to take this trip is money I wouldn't be spending if not for the cruise. And if I knew the cruise was just gonna be a bunch of days at sea, no way would I spend all that money, and a $3000 refund (50% of the cruise fare) would not make up for that. But it's the risk we take I guess. It's also why I buy very comprehensive insurance that pays me if there's itinerary changes. Pretty much what happened to us on the cruise a few weeks ago on Ovation. A 22 hour flight to Australia for a b2b, the first cruise ended up having 2 ports in 10 days with no compensation then I tested positive for covid and had to miss the second one. Disappointing, I'll admit there were a few moments that I felt gutted and just wanted to go home but we tried to make the best of it and ended up still enjoying the holiday. As you say it's a risk we take and sometimes that's just life and we have to go with it. We'll certainly always remember our first trip to Australia.
Rare Oceansaway17 Posted December 22, 2022 #28 Share Posted December 22, 2022 wow sorry to hear about issues with Ovation. I am due to sail in the region in a year and hoping no issues. these big girl ships do get propulsion issues at times.

If that isn’t enough weight savings, I heard that Pinnacles get priority debarkation so maybe we can debark them all today? Pinnacles always get first priority to "all" events. Is walking the plank considered an entertainment event🤔😁? I guess it depends on who is in the audience and who is performing in the event. 🤣
Randomjoe Posted December 22, 2022 #30 Share Posted December 22, 2022 We are on the next sailing and get onboard in few hours. Haven't been notified of it being cancelled yet. Will keep an eye out. We were given this cruise as a wedding gift. Wondering if they cancel ports or the entire sailing will the refund go back to the person who booked it or would it come back to a nominated bank account? Honestly we just want a holiday as we have been waiting for this for 3 years now (since we got married). Fingers crossed.

Welcome to CC. Refunds usually go to the card/payment which booked the cruise.

If you really want the cash, you can either try the casino method mentioned above or change your account to cash and then ask again for cash. This is why there is more redundancy built into the ships, and I can guarantee that there are at least a dozen cruise ships worldwide currently sailing with an engine taken down for major overhaul (scheduled every 12,000 running hours) that no one onboard is aware of. And, if this is an azipod issue, I don't know what the failure type is, but the azipods are new technology, as it relates to maritime propulsion (200 years and tens of thousands of ships as data points, versus 20 years and a couple of hundred ships), so whether this is a maintenance issue or a manufacturer issue is up for question. I seem to recall the Navy having lots of issues when they were developing the gas turbines for ships. Surely someone aboard can sniff out the actual issue? As a long time student /fan club member of @chengkp75can we look at Wikipedia and try to make a list of possibilities? Installed power: 2 × Wärtsilä 12V46F (2 × 14,400 kW) (Hotel?) 2 × Wärtsilä 16V46F (2 × 19,200 kW) (Propulsion?) 2 × Cat 3516C HD (2 × 2,500 kW) (Emergency?) Propulsion Diesel-electric 2 × ABB Azipod XO thrusters (2 × 20.5 MW) 4 × 3,500 kW (4,694 hp) Brunvoll FU115 bow thrusters Speed 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph) It would seem that the vessel has two engine rooms, two big azipods and two propulsion-focused diesel generators. So if there is one big engine offline, would they be down to (currently making) 18 knots? If there is one Azipod out or limping with a bearing problem the same? I remember some older ships having more engines, so the loss of one was not so noticeable? Can all the engines ( +hotel) pool the power for the azipods? The cruise industry has made a business decision to move away from well proven shafts to azipods. A fair number of ports have been missed (and vacations ruined), but as far as I can remember, no lives or ships have been lost as a result. I think I would feel safer on a ship with azipods turning in a fast current docking on a river vs one with fixed shafts. It is all trade offs. 07 Feb 1953 - Queen Mary beats N.Y. wharf strike - Trove (nla.gov.au) Edited December 25, 2022 by ew101
