Brother in law refuses to use medallion app

Is it mandatory to use the medallion. My brother-in-law is one of those who thinks everyone is watching. He refuses to allow access to his photos and camera. Does he somehow bypass this? I apologize if this has already been asked.

We don't put anything on our phones. We did use the web in our booking. We also needed to have our photos and when it was required our VAX cards. Was told without inputting would not be moved to green lane. Also without the app we couldn't order drinks or make reservations on our phone which didn't matter to us personally.

That's his choice.  Let him deal with it at check in...surely it will not be as smooth as if he takes pictures of the passport and enters it into the princess app.

Dining reservations have to be made on the app, so he will not be able to make dining reservations unless you link their reservation to yours and make reservations for the whole party.

Thank you so much!

No big deal to not use the app.  It will take him a few extra moments to check-in at the port.  There is no skirting the photo, though because the ship's security uses it to verify identity for embarkation.

I would be surprised if ship's security didn't have the capability to take a photo at embarkation.

He will be able to do everything, it will just all take more time. Check-in will require that he wait in a longer line and he won’t be able to carry out many activities onboard without waiting in lines or on the phone. Those who use the app can make, cancel or change dinner reservations, purchase photos, book shore excursions, ask questions of guest services etc using their phone wherever and whenever they like while on the ship. He will simply have to go do those things in person or go use the phone in his cabin. If that’s his preference, it will work

Never understand people like this, do they think there is a big room somewhere with lots of people, and lots of screens watching what you do.

And cameras all over the ship so they know where everyone is at all times anyway -- don't need the app to track people.  But these points have all been cussed and discussed on here multiple times so it's nothing new unfortunately.

No cameras in passenger corridors, or elevator foyers

Yup that’s how I feel. I said that to him but that’s just the way he is

Yes, not worth the bother, like people I know who won't but thing on the Internet, or use Internet banking

His concerns are not without some merit.

Using the medallion with GPS and charge tracking, Princess knows a lot about us. They know when we are in our cabin, for how long, and where we go when we leave the cabin. They know where we get our food and drink and how long it is between drinks and meals and snacks.

It's tracking all our personal data about our entire cruise and yes, that data, combined with all the precruise data they collect about us, can be used to make decisions about future cruises with demographics on who their high margin customers are.

Princess and every other cruise line has always known who their high margin customers are just by looking at their stateroom account.   Demographics - you gave them that information when you registered for the cruise.

The new information they can glean is how many passengers stop at the included entertainment venues, and whether they can reduce those or retain their value.

Let's face it, the time for paranoia about being electronically tracked is long passed, especially if you use any kind of a smart phone, or website.  We are being tracked.

Yes, and then use that to improve on experiences and see what customers want. Maybe they close a lounge, and have more staffing at another lounge.

Your cabin steward isn't walking in on couples 'napping' in the afternoon who may not hear a tap on the door.

Even if there were:   if you use a smart phone they’re already staring right into your face 24/7.

All those displays in front of every cabin door are in fact, Samsung tablets. Close examination reveals they all have front-facing cameras. So now you know, there are hundreds of cameras in the passenger corridors! 😱

After the extensive dry dock of the Royal Princess in 2018, CCTV cameras were installed in all passenger corridors.  They are placed at every blind corner and at fire doors.
