Do I really need to pack my Chromebook, a bible, or a pack of cards?

We are off this weekend for our first cruise.  I won't take my Chromebook unless it's absolutely necessary, as I presume there are on-board computers to use if I need to book some internet time?

There are Gideon's Bibles in each room?

I could ask for a used pack of casino cards at the casino or purser's desk?

While I don't believe there is a Bible in every room, they do have a wonderful library and I'm only guessing but I would think there might be a bible if not checked out.

I'm sure you will have no trouble obtain playing cards by inquiring at the pursers desk.  You also may find other's looking for bridge partners

Also I did a quick google about your computer question -

We also offer computers for guest use in our on board libraries, which are internet-accessible for those with this plan. The Premium plan includes everything from the Essential Plan, but also allows music and video streaming, clearer video calls.

A deck of cards won't take up much room - why not take your own?

There are no Bibles in the Stateroom, there are some in the library but I believe they are in the Reference section so aren't meant to leave the library. There are computers there too and they are popular for those who want a full PC screen. Many passengers manage with their smartphones or just don't bother at all. There are apps with the Bible in them, including one offered by The Gideons. And Kindles are also widely used on board, the Bible is a free book there. There are heaps of games available on board including cards.

There are [or were] a couple of desk tops in the library. The actual 'computer room' fell by the wayside years ago when tablets/iPads/ Notebooks became so prevalent. Personally, if the Chromebook is very portable and a necessity, I'd take it.

Pack of cards? Could be in the cupboard in the card room but again, for the tiny space it takes up, I'd take a pack then you can  guarantee all 52 cards will be there.

I don't recall a Gideon bible either and yes there will be at least one in the library, but if it's in the reference section, it can't be loaned out.

Happy cruising and I think we'd love to know how your first cruise 'went'.

I think the Bibles, like the Atlases, disappeared during Covid.

Ah, right.  I was just going to say there's always been a bible in a bedside drawer in our room on all of our cruises.

Also, you can buy a pack of playing cards in one of the ship's shops.

To answer the OP's question - no you do not need to pack any of those items, nor anything else, if you don't want to.

Whether you actually need them is anothewr question.

I haven’t seen cards for sale in the shops and not seen a Bible post COVID

Between dancing, gym, pool, drinks, eating, taking photos and people watching we wouldn't have time to use any of those things.

They would take up space and add weight that would be better used for outfits to dress up in on board.

Nor have I, and since I recently had about $10 unspent OBC I was looking for the possibilities. Contraceptives and toothpaste seemed the only options. I also wondered whether the Purser's Desk would have some Bibles out the back, since while I can understand why they would want to cut back on unnecessary distributions, I've no doubt that The Gideons would happily hand over a box of their publications to the ship.

Thanks all - useful replies.  What about an umbrella?  Are there ship's umbrellas we can borrow for excursions?

There may be - I think Queens Grill cabins have umbrellas however I always pack a lightweight folding umbrella which is very easy to have with you in your handbag or backpack while you're touring.

They do but they are of the lengthy, walking variety and a pain to carry around. Much more convenient to go with a telescopic/folding  version as you indicated.

On the card front, the casino desk will sell you branded packs for $2, charged to your onboard account. I think I learned that on this board! On a cruise last year on QV I popped by and picked up a few packs, which were sealed and signed out by the casino operator as attached.

Great value, I thought, and a lovely inexpensive souvenir. Two of the packs (unused) went on to be stocking stuffers for fellow cruisers this past Christmas!

I've never seen a bible on the QE and I've sailed on her 3 times pre and post Covid
