What’s the room to butler ratio on the Prima? I just got off the Escape, and the butler said there were 95 Haven rooms and 10 butlers. I didn’t think to ask if he was including the night butler in his count or not, but either way roughly 10 rooms per butler. We had excellent service from the butler. .

When we were on in November, our butler told us he had 11 rooms to take care of. So, it would seem there would be roughly 10 - 12 butlers onboard.

We always had very quick service from our butler.

Are you planning on Haven?

Iceland was amazing. We did into the volcano tour. Incredible!

45 minutes for ice. Then another 45 minutes for some juices that should have been restocked during turndown.

Out of curiosity, did you inform your butler when you met him that you like ice and fresh juices? Or did you just expect it with 10 minutes notice.

Actually gave him a list of things we wanted/expected and some of the items we were told to call when we wanted them.

This is not isolated to the Prima. It was bad on the Encore as well especially because we had a spa Haven which is located in the Aft and not in the Haven Enclave.

After 1am, it all goes bad it seems. Then they seem to get an attitude when we don't leave the room till lunch time. We also get a few cocktails delivered around 11/1130 am which I found was easier for me to go get.

Never had a good one yet that meets our needs. I understand that we are night owls but if you are going to advertise 24 hours I expect you to deliver it.

I would. My husband would not. 🙂

Personally, I think that you might lose out on the value of Pr1ma given what you have stated you enjoy out of a cruise. Here's why I say that:

- you enjoy your deck time. If you're cruising Pr1ma there is a ton of space to spread out on the deck, but if it's cold, you're kind of out of luck. The Haven Lounge gets full - there were a few days not one seat was to be found, yet plenty of space on the windy (and sunny sundeck).

- if you are on a sunny, warm cruise, the sundeck will be overwhelmed. There were a few days where almost every lounger was taken on my cruise (November from Spain to NYC).

- there is no Haven observation lounge or courtyard. No snacks. No coffee. I know - order from your butler. The Infinity Pool is drawn down half when the ship is moving. You don't have an Infinity Pool, you have a kiddie pool (but I don't think you spend a lot of time in the pool).

- Pr1ma's itineraries are pretty basic. I could be wrong, but I kind of think you're looking for cruises that are going to more interesting places than the normal. Not that normal is bad - I still love the Caribbean, Med, and haven't been Norway/Iceland, but you're not going to see South America, Africa, or any parts of Asia/Australia on Pr1ma/V!va.

- I didn't find many quiet areas onboard, Haven or not. The observation lounge (open to all) is nuts from about 8 AM - 6/7 PM. Plenty of open chairs after that.

- the Haven Restaurant is excellent! It really is. BUT, it's not nearly as good as other Haven's we've been on. Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but you can tell the quality has decreased, and when making special requests, the kitchen staff are still going to follow their rules (i.e. shrimp cocktail must be presented as a Shrimp Louie on a bed of lettuce, with avocado and tomato which will go to waste. Why? To preserve presentation, we were told). Please know, this is a very, very minor gripe. It's just an example of what happened.

- Haven guests were required to go to the theater for shore excursions, rather than having an escort when the excursion was called. We had to sit in a room for more than an hour with 500 of our not new friends.

- there are so many extra-fee spaces onboard that take away from the relaxing environment of a cruise. They're popular and we did enjoy some of them. Mini golf, darts, go-karts, Galaxy Pavilion. That's a lot of space that could have been used for included activities. I don't think any of these are value-adds for you or your dear bride.

- be prepared (I'll always be a Scout) to have a map and compass for the first couple days. The layout is totally different. Even on the last sea day we got turned around after thinking we knew the ship.

I do have to point out, the concierge and butler were excellent! Best we've had!

I will say, the bartenders are amazing and not quite as overworked as on other ships. Don't get me wrong - they are awfully busy, but you're not waiting 15 minutes for a drink in the restaurant or when going to the bar.

And so, that's what I didn't really like/appreciate about Pr1ma. I did ask my husband too and some of his reasons are added in. I know you may not care about the pools/extra fee spaces, but I think there's enough not on Pr1ma that I wouldn't recommend you sailing. But, if you do, I bet you'll still have a good cruise. Just not a great cruise.

cruiseny, thanks a million. the only reasons i was even considering this cruise is 2 fold. (1) seeing the northern lights has always been on my wife's bucket list. If i book this cruise and she doesnt get to see them, my life as i know it will be forfeit (2) a few years back we took a european cruise and one of he ports was brugge. it was one of the most beautiful, picturesque places we've ever been, and this sailing gives us the opportunity to go back.

im thinking of booking the penthouse suite with master bedroom/large balcony. its not in the haven, but the room is almost identical, and for the price difference, i can suffer through not dining in the haven restaurant. breakfast and lunch in cagney's and moderno will keep me happy.

as ive posted before, i book based on both price and itinerary. this one seemed ideal, as it ends in southamptopn, and we can spend a few extra days in london at the end.

by the way we're also booked on the 17 day trans atlantic from rio to lisbon. it's on the star and we've sailed he before. i have no complaints whatsoever about any ncl ship we've ever been on. give me my balcony, the heineken,/glass of champagne, have the butler bring coffee, hot water for tea, croissants and sweet rolls in the morning, and im good to go

anyway, i wish to thank you for your input, and just like chiefjrk mate, i hope we can find a mutually agreeable cruise one day. if so, the 1st round is on me

Northern Lights as you know is never a guarantee. We sailed Prima last September from Iceland to Southampton, so identical trip to what you were looking for. My sister's one request was to see the lights, and we got lucky that I took a potty break at 2am and looked out the window. Our trip was scheduled to stop in Isafjordur, which no one has stopped in yet. So instead we got an overnight in Akureyri. Did a night time Northern Lights tour to try and find them - saw nothing. Only time we saw them was in the middle of the night leaving one of the Norway ports of call.

Only reason we even saw them at all was because we knew what to look for based on the first time we saw them on an Alaska cruise. It was a hazy overcast, that the night time exposure setting on my phone camera picked up as neon green. Over in Norway the longer you sit outside and stare the clearer it gets, and we were able to see the greens and purples with the naked eye around 3am. But to see the lights, you need a combo of good weather, good lucky, and patience to set an alarm for 2-3am and look at the sky.

If Brugge is a big important port for you - just look at the time in port as well. We were not there for long, so by the time we got to city center and had a small bite to eat, we only had 1-2 hours for beer tasting before having to make our way back to the bus.

We didn't feel Prima Haven was worth the price of admission, especially on a cold weather trip like we had. We were the only ones in the pool the one time we tried it out, and it was heated - but shallow. Easy entry (no ladder like in the courtyard Haven pools), with the warm sauna right outside of it was nice. But a cold weather cruise, nope, not spending money on Haven.

Best rooms to us looked like the non-Haven aft suites on deck 9. Only downside is your just one deck up from the public outdoor spaces. But those balconies were huge, and the room would have cost us 1/3 of what we paid to be in Haven.

Can you get M&M’s from the butler since there are no courtyard snacks?

How deep is the infinity pool when it is half drained?

Is the concierge desk in the Haven lounge like on the Bliss and Escape?

We chose not to get M&M's or gummy bears on this trip, but I did hear of others receiving them. So, I'd say yes!

For the pool, if I dropped down on my knees, the water would be lapping right around my chest. So, two to two and a half feet'ish? When we were in Barcelona (embarkation day), the water was just over four feet. Here's a couple photos that might give you a better impression.

In Barcelona - standing up, but leaning over the edge for the photo:

image.thumb.jpeg.167f88aa48118bd60219c2e4f625e0a5.jpeg

On a sea day (we didn't see the pool filled up whilst in port after Barcelona). You can see how much water was drained from the pool.

image.thumb.jpeg.aa8fe1c3d3c7ab0cafcb992e0f80ee3f.jpeg

The concierge desk on Pr1ma is a long table at desk height. You sit down and talk with the concierge. I haven't cruised on Bliss or Escape, but it was more like a counter you lean on on Getaway and Joy. I don't think I took a photo of the concierge's long desk (three crew members were stationed there). They were just as helpful, if not more helpful than the concierge we've had in the past!

Thanks for the photos. Definitely a kiddie pool on sea days!

I like the table idea for the concierge. Bliss and Escape have counters to lean on.

You can get any snacks you want in your cabin that are available on the ship. We had endless goodies in our room the whole trip.

Pool at sea photos.... (ignore hubbys chunky belly, that's what happens when you drink a lot and eat gummy bears by the bowlful). Date was obviously wrong on the gopro too... We hung around on our knees to stay warm (water was warmer than the outside air).

In the first photo, the hot sauna is the 2 large floor to ceiling windows on the left, the cold ice room are the 2 windows to the right. So you can go right from the pool to either of those, although I don't recommend the ice room when in Iceland in September.

I didn't take photos of the concierge desk either, but always found it a bit annoying. Long waits and folks would cluster around the couches and chairs in the lounge waiting in line.

Sailed on the Prima to the Caribbean in January. The comments about the smaller, more intimate spaces on the ship are real. Almost everything on the ship is crowded. We had 2 sea days to start the trip due to weather and there was palpable irritation onboard since we were all crammed together. The Observation Deck is a beautiful space but always crowded. Syd Normans wasn't even worth trying to get in, we weren't going to waste 90 minutes of our cruise waiting in line. The comedy club is really poor; the space is small and oddly shaped such that only about 7 or 8 seats across the front of the room constitute the rows - capacity has to be under 75 (with 3500 people onboard). Indulge Food Hall is a great idea and the food is good, but it is an absolute madhouse. We aren't really buffet people but if we were the chaos - and the odd smells - of this one would have dissuaded us. The bars are nice but always crowded unless you're in port. The pool is very unfortunate - it sits in shade most of the day due to the looming go-kart track overhead and is tiny. The other outdoor spaces around the ship are also very small, so we got our sun on the beaches at our stops. The activity areas on the top deck are sparsely used and take up valuable real estate (didn't see anyone playing pickleball, mini golf, or darts up there). The real oddity is the go-kart track. It's an extra fee, is only open for certain irregular hours each day, and steals so much valuable real estate that I wouldn't be surprised if the ship is redesigned in the future to eliminate it. Absolutely silly.

The food was good, shows were good, service good, and overall experience was pleasant. We had a fun cruise, but it's difficult to relax with so many people crammed so closely together. We knew about the ship's design going in but based on the experience of our travel mates on a prior cruise (that was not sold out) we hoped that the issues would be minor. Unfortunately our cruise was sold out and the ship just can't handle it. Will most likely try one of Norweigian's other ships next cruise.

Never again.  Haven is no longer the little area. They added so many rooms to it.

 No special feel to it.

No dance floors for Ballroom.

Reservations for everything. Sid Normans capacity is a joke.

 Small buffet

Weird food court.

Haven lounge bar is so small. Other haven lounge areas are also odd being sectioned.

Butlers are useless as they have to many rooms.

Outside deck areas we also useless.

We sailed Iceland and Norway in September.

The Haven bar is the biggest in the fleet

Photos look great but for those that have not seen the layout each picture is basically a separate room/area  because of dividers. You cannot see the bar from each of those areas.

Yes it's the biggest in the fleet but the Haven is also biggest in the fleet

Concierge Desk - Big, open, not a fast food service counter - you feel like you are being served since you are seated getting your request filled.

You can still order off the Courtyard menu while sitting on the sundeck

Butlers still deliver treats

Nope, no trail mix ingredients like some of the BA+ ships (encore pictured below)

Yeah,,, in the Haven, I am looking for a quite, intimate setting. That is exactly what the Prima/Viva deliver. Not a pub. On every BA/BA+ ship, you have to squeeze your way to the bar since there are always the 5 or 6 "regular" drunks blocking the way. I never had a problem walking up to the Haven bar and getting a drink on the Prima/Viva.

Fingers pointed at me I presume, as I'm one of those notorious 'drunks' hogging the seats in the regular Haven bar. 🙄 We've never had a problem walking up the Haven bar and getting a drink, even when it was 2 people deep.

The Prima Haven bar and lounge is just a different experience than the other ships. My biggest gripe with it was that the photo with the xmas tree was the "library" quiet zone. It is literally next to the bar with no walls to block noise, and on our trip we were told in the evening hours there was no loud talking permitted at the bar and no frozen drinks to be made so as not to disturb the guests sleeping below or the guests sitting in the library.

Bar itself is large, but not conducive to making friends. A fun part of being in the Haven on the breakaway plus ships is stepping into that lounge/bar area and seeing a ton of people and striking up a conversation. You couldn't do that on Prima - everyone was in their little tiny pockets and closed off, and practically whispering. There's no fun in that to me at all.

And what Bird failed to mention about the concierge desk is that when all those fancy seats are filled, it's a massive long line of folks just standing in that peaceful quiet lounge getting grumpy. Our trip was particularly bad the first few days for a number of reasons, and the line was easily 6+ people deep wrapping in front of the couches and chairs in the lounge so that you couldn't sit and chat because there was someone standing in front of you.

Need to look at photos when those spaces are actually in use to really see the vibe, not at 6am before anyone wakes up.

We too were drunk chair hoggers at the Haven bar.

After reading your reply, which I think is spot on, we probably would have been best friends.😁

So interesting to read such varying views

The ships design was intentional

Haven design with smaller conversational spaces also intentional

no large pool- yet rather smaller venues, smaller pools, sundecks etc around the ship

tablet-ipad ordering table service for variety

I guess for some, Prima and Viva are a 1 and done thing ...or not ever..as they prefer a different style of ship layout.

Others will happily sail Prima class again.

I think you nailed it. People either love or hate the Prima after sailing. And all too many hate it without sailing on the Prima based on the negative posts and reviews.

Count me as another who’d gladly go again (and subsequently am booked on Viva, which sort of qualifies).

I think it’s one of those things where the people who dislike it, really-really-really dislike it. But that strong opinion tends to overweight and drown out more than it would imply from a representative perspective.

Even in probably a more critical, less open to change group such as is represented on these boards, you weight 75% of people who liked it.

Not to say I can’t identify some of its flaws. Though I’m quite positive Aqua will be much more well received. Some of the shock factor of the differences will be normalized and some of the biggest (or should I say smallest) design perpetrators will be enlarged and addressed. Including some of the people who dislike the class to an extreme extent should have self opted out by the time aqua releases.

Design is one thing - where they missed the mark was with the execution. We loved the renderings, we loved the concept, we loved the idea of a large ship but small ship feel. That's not what we felt at all when we were on board.

Combine that with the higher price tag for the newness and it doubles down on the negative lingering thoughts. I'm hoping Aqua and beyond tweak some of the simple things that can be easily fixed/improved upon without changing the whole concept, but unless there's a too good to be true price I have no interest in trying Viva just to say I've tried it.

Absolutely not. Never again on a Prima class ship.

I've been on dozens on NCL cruises (and dozens of others on RCCL, Celebrity and Carnival) and the only cruise I could not wait to get off the ship was the Prima.
