MUTS ?

On our recent British Isles cruise they pretty much played movies all day long every day. Is that typical fleetwide or was it something they did for that cruise?

I’d have a hard time booking a warm weather cruise on Princess if I knew I had to put up with listening to movie dialog all day long in order to sit by the main pool.

We do NOT like MUTS.  It used to be that Princess showed movies during the day in smaller rooms on big screens -- cozy, private, and we loved that.  With MUTS, you're assaulted with the noise of movies that either you care nothing about, or are offensive.  Very bad idea.  JMHO

We usually find a place where the sound is at a minimum.

there is typically something playing on the screen if not then it is possibly a band.  We complain on our survey each time that there needs to be more quiet spaces by the pool and even inside for those that want to read or just do something without being assaulted by music or movies or other loud sound..like 555 we to try to find a spot on the back half of the ship or if it is a grand class we go to the aft pool area as we don't want to be forced into the sanctuary just to have quiet sun time.

MUTS is totally obnoxious and outdated. Relaxing around the pool is impossible when it's blasting old concerts and ancient movies. We were docked next to a ship with MUTS playing and we could hear it inside our closed cabin!

On my most recent Princess cruise, on the Enchanted in April to the Caribbean, they did indeed show movies in the evening, but not during the day.  The screen had some other type of pretty pictures on it.

Regarding finding quiet places, you can find loungers to fit your needs.

Too quiet = library.  I can replicate that in my backyard if I want to.

This seems to be the trend.

I think we are at the tipping point of being willing to pay more up front for a cruise with a quieter ambience, an example being we don't need a casino or movies playing on deck.

We were disappointed with LACK of movies on our recent Alaska cruise.

My tweener was very bored.

Our first sea day was too cold for adults, but all the kids were in the pool watching hte one movie they played.  More entertainment for the kids would have been nice.  (And I like watching movies from the hottub myself.)

(On our Disney cruises he would hang out in the pool and watch movies.)

On Emerald, we were at Neptune when we were at a pool.  A movie was playing a lot of the time during the day at the Calypso pool. The MUTS sound didn’t bother us during the day. There was music piped into Neptune or a band and we listened to the music. I couldn’t even tell you what movie was played. Not sure if the music or band interfered with the movie.

I also want to include that I loved the music that they played around the pool. Mainly 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Since MUTS stands for "Movies Under the Stars" the idea was to show movies at night.  I think all the extra daytime stuff just naturally followed.  The sound systems have never been good.  It's hard to hear the dialogue for the nighttime movies, and the daytime stuff is just blasted too loud.  MUTS was a big marketing thing in the beginning, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go away in the future (in favor of who knows what).

So the plan worked! Some Princess bean-counter is getting a bonus for this.

My wife and I are the opposite.  We appreciate MUTS all throughout the day. Sound systems definitely leave something to be desired. We were relieved they had closed captioning on the Enchanted in April.

I can empathize with the arguments against it I just don't find it nearly as annoying as some people do, even when it's something I have no interest in watching or hearing.  There are alternative pools that don't have a MUTS screen.

We usually see a mix of movies, still pictures of beautiful places that Princess goes to, and concert videos.  With the exception of feeling violated by a concert video of "post Steve Perry Journey" we found the mix to be pretty good.  It is true that the Grand Class ships have the better design with both a MUTS pool and a non-MUTS pool, along with a Retreat pool and a wake pool. On the Royal Class ships you have fewer options.  My wish for the future would be for the "Silent Disco" concept to be moved up to the Lido Deck (and whatever we are supposed to call the deck with pools on the Sphere Class ships that so far just have boring numbers.)  Wireless headphones that pick up the audio could be worn by anyone who want to hear Steve Augeri pretend to be the front man of Journey while the rest of us can relax in relative peace.

That could easily work with using their app and for those that don't have a phone they could loan out individual units.

What I meant is our next cruise will be on such as Azamara or Windstar, (which don't have casinos.) Or other cruise line, like Oceania, which would be considered a country club feel rather than a resort-at-sea. Sorry about my wording.

Ahhh, that make sense. I thought you meant you were going to purchase into Sanctuary or some other quiet spot on the cruise.

How about passing out noise cancelling headsets to those that can't find their quiet place, or earplugs so you don't have to wear a headset in the heat. Earplugs could be worn in the pool so that solves the damage to loaned headsets. I like the outdoor entertainment and after 38yrs of marriage, I'm good at drowning out noise I don't care to listen to. I bet a lot more people enjoy the outdoor entertainment than those that don't. There's always a place you can find to have your quiet space, but if you decide on the MUTS area, you can do so without restricting others.
