Stateroom door decorations not allowed???

Recommended Posts

I'm ready to go my Alaskan cruise in two days and have been looking forward to putting up a few removable door decorations. Nothing major, just a few removable stickers. Is it really true that they will remove them? I have never had that happen in the past 😞

See #36 on the prohibited items list. NCL does not allow any type of door decorations. Whether or not that is enforced is a different question.

we were on  the 17 day  star last april, and although in theory ncl frowns upon door decorations, there were loads of them and one one removed them the entire sailing

If they don't take up a lot of space, take them. Worst case, your stateroom steward will take them off and put them in your room.

I've seen loads of decorations on stateroom doors in the past. None of them seemed to be touched during the cruise.

We're already in Seattle and I have them with me. It's not really a big deal, I just enjoy them. Makes it a bit easier to find room. Also I like seeing them on other doors. IMO, this whole cruise reminds me of like a type of "adult sleepover camp". It's a lot of fun. Now, if I can only find a hand-made crocheted duck that someone is going to hide. . . 🙂

Before putting anything on your door I would check with either the Guest Desk or the Hotel General Manager.  Some GM's allow decorating and others do not.

Some GM's to not approve of hiding ducks either.

Enjoy your time in Seattle.  Tonight there will be fireworks at T Mobile Park (South of downtown where the Mariner's play.  Tomorrow night there will be a fireworks display in the middle of Lake Union (North of downtown).

We had 2 cabins on the Jewel, same type of magnet - they looked like a porthole but with different pictures. About half-way through the cruise, the magnet disappeared from 1 cabin, not mine. Pretty sure it was stolen, not removed by NCL. I took mine off for safekeeping.

On Encore last month I saw numerous doors decorated. Passed by them every day and always saw them up.

I did notice they were decorated sparingly, nothing really creative or over the top like I see on Carnival.

Maybe people were being cautious so as not to have them taken down.

I would never ask to do something that is now allowed. Guest Service can't say anything other than the official rules.

Just do it.

www3traveler. since the ncl policy is "no door decorations" asking guest services will probably end up to be a futile effort.

as my sainted grandma once said " it's always better to ask for forgiveness than  permission"

If NCL removes them, they will leave them on the inside of your door or inside your cabin.

There is the small possibility that anything you put on your door or leave outside your cabin may be stolen/moved by other passengers.  As long as you are okay with the possibility of losing your magnets then feel free to decorate your door.  Some previous posters on this topic have said they've gone to security to ask them to review the hallway tapes when magnets disappeared,  The crew has enough work to deal with - please don't put anything on your door that you aren't willing to lose.  My guess is that if enough angry people complain to security/guest services they'll just start enforcing the door decoration ban since they have enough actual problems to deal with.

If you are just (as one previous passenger noted) looking to mark your door when you return to your cabin after too many drinks, please just use a magnet you don't care about and wouldn't mind if it got lost or stolen.

I belive one of the reasons NCL does not want door decorations is that each cabin door is a fire rated  In case of a fire in a cabin, the door is designed to help contain the fire within the cabin until it can be extinguished. If there are combustible decorations on the outside of the door, if there was a fire in the cabin, the door would still contain any flames but the surface of the door could get hot enough so that the decoration would self combust and spread the fire into the corridor and other parts of the ship (which would be very bad).

In the US, any UL fire rated door cannot have combustible signs on them for that reason. UL has strict requirements for what type of signage can be affixed to a fire-rated door.

I’m sure that is the main reason, but I’m guessing that they’re also concerned that people might put offensive things on the doors too.

Just leave the stuff at home folks.

In addition to what is listed above, there's probably the issue with leftover tape residue, damage to the door from hard or sharp edges, complaints of theft, etc.

Whatever the reason, guests should abide.

Also be aware that some folks get great pleasure in rearranging door decorations to other doors. That happened on my last cruise. Most people found it amusing, except that drunk guy who got in trouble for pounding on the wrong door.

on my last cruise I had a flat magnet decoration on the door - it had our names on it...it was small (about 5-6 inches) anyway, my room steward removed it and put it in my cabin... I was annoyed because there were 4 other doors near us decorated with much bigger decorations and they were never removed, just mine. I didn't let it upset me, although at first it did, and I didn't take it out on the steward.... but I was puzzled as to why my door was singled out.

Maybe because it had your names on it?  Maybe he was trying to protect your privacy?

I was talking with GM at Latitudes party and asked about this. His response was that flat magnetic items weren't an issue but some people use adhesive backed items that may damage doors, or protrude into the hallway, or were highly combustible (all points made here by others). Because its easier to ban all decorations than to enforce why some are allowed the ban is general, but usually they only enforce the ones they feel have some hazardous component to them. I do know one person who was charged for damage to a door from a supposedly removable adhesive.

I use a photo from previous cruises attached with magnet, not as an attention seeker, but as way to easily identify my room. I admit to loving when someone in the room by the elevators has an identifier so i know which way to turn to get to my room.

I honestly do not understand how this is constantly debated.  NCL does not have to have any reason to ban it other than it is their ship and their doors and they say no.  It is that simple, the answer is no, it is not allowed therefore do not do it.

As to identifying my cabin, luckily, NCL has my cabin number displayed and I look for that to know which room is mine.

I find the maps all over the ship, and the prominent numbers on each and every cabin to be quite helpful!
