Can you walk with your bags from the downtown hotels to Southampton cruise port?  It doesn't look far on google maps.

We've done it a couple of times without any problem.

There are five different cruise terminals, all quite spread out. Some are more walkable than others, depending on where you’re staying.

Ahhh... an important detail! I was referring to Ocean Cruise Terminal Berth 46 and was staying at Novotel Southampton; there are a number of hotels closer to that pier.

I wouldn’t walk. It is possible, but a horrid walk along busy roads, and it will probably rain.

You can, but I wouldn't.

It doesn't make sense spending lots of money on a cruise and then wanting to walk some distance carrying luggage to save £10 on a taxi.

As others have posted, it's not one to walk with luggage.

About 30 minutes, over a mile, alongside a busy but boring  main road.

A simple route, all on sidewalks, level ground, pedestrian lights to help you cross the road, so it's safe but no fun even in decent weather.

Where have the senses of adventure, commitment and accomplishment gone?  A 20-25 minute walk with rolling luggage is hardly much different than what a lot of people insist on doing in large, busy airports all the time!

Of course, if the weather is bad, different situation.

Stayed at Room2 this past April for cruise out of Berth 46.  Could see the ship from our room, crossed the street and were there.

Why make life unnecessarily difficult? One of the joys of cruising is not having to deal with airports.

Agreed. But only applicable if you live fairly close to the departure/arrival port. I am looking forward to my next cruise which is a Southampton to Southampton one, so we can drive - but these are rare for my preferred cruise line.

That is true. Being lucky enough to live where I do, I would never cruise other than from Southampton.

A walk along West Quay Road isn't my idea of "a sense of adventure" 😉

Or "an accomplishment". And what need is there for "commitment"?

But each to their own

Although driving along it successfully while trying to work out where you're going might well be an accomplishment. 😀

Driving  along it on a saturday gives you all the time in the world to figure it out 😀

But a taxi driver will bypass the jam by taking Harbour Parade 🙂

Here is an example of walking verse a taxi in Southampton.

From Southampton National Express station to Premier Inn West Quay

- I took a taxi under £10. Arrived relaxed.

- my sister and brother in law (he is fit for his age) came on a different Coach and walked, Thinking it didn’t look far on Goggle.   Sister was exhausted after pulling/pushing luggage on the sidewalk with people.

Get a taxi and arrive relaxed to the ship.

  • 2 weeks later...

We once walked a short distance from a hotel to the cruise port for an Alaska cruise, and one of the wheels fell off my daughter's suitcase.   Something I recall when making this decision again.

It doesn't look far on Google because it isn't far in real life. 482 metres? That's what, 1.33 lengths of a modern cruise ship?

That said, the walk from Premier Inn West Quay to the actual cruise terminals is much further.

We liked it because we had three adults in the room.  The room that we had was a loft that had a full bed up a ladder.  Fine for an adult, but if someone had mobility issues wouldn't work.  Had a small kitchen sink, fridge and a microwave.  Did not include breakfast. Nothing fancy but was clean and nice and close to the cruise terminal.  Would stay there again but this year sailing with celebrity and believe they sail from either the 101 (City Cruise Terminal) or 102 (Horizon) so booked the Novotel.

What are your thoughts on Room2?

Room2 on Queen's Terrace is the closest hotel to Berth 46 (Ocean Cruise Terminal) Cross the small park in front of the hotel & cross the road (pedestrian lights), thro the dock gate & a short distance on the port sidewalk. Total about 700 yards, 8 minutes.

The road outside the hotel used to be part of the traffic gyratory system. noisy & gridlocked. That all change a few years back when the road past the dock gate was re-vamped to two-way traffic and Queen's Terrace is now a peaceful blind road.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/qbBwVKjKzBoagE3f9

A 2-minute walk to the bars & restaurants of Oxford Street, 8 minutes west on Town Quay to pubs & restaurants of the waterfront & historic area, 10 mins NW to the city centre at the Bargate, 7 minutes east to  Solent Skies aircraft museum on Albert Road South.

But for those cruising from other cruise terminals, with luggage it's a short taxi ride.

And a reminder of @Planning to cruise's post - for a hotel convenient to "the" cruise terminal we need to know which of the five terminals

John Bull - what would  we Southampton cruisers do without you 😁

1. Arriving LHR terminal 3 from JFK. We will be taking National Express with pickups at terminals 2 & 3. Would it make sense to walk over to 2 since we have the time and board with first group (maybe better seat selection)

2. On arrival at station in Southampton, do we take a cab to the Moxy?

Do cabs accept credit cards or is it all cash?

Thank you.

1. Terminals 2 and 3 share the same coach stop (https://faq.nationalexpress.com/s/article/Where-are-your-coach-stops-at-Heathrow-Airport-1581438954890)

2. It is a ~500m walk from the coach station in Southampton to the Moxy. Unless you pre-book a taxi, you may find it faster to walk anyway. Yes, taxis accept credit cards.
