well they certainly were not last month and I am sure we would have heard if they were - for many that would be the last straw - serious enough for them to invest in some premium internet minutes to tell us from onboard :)

Appears RCI is now charging $14.95 for steaks in the

main dining room. Any info if Celebrity is doing the same?

They are charging $14.95 for the steak from Chops (alternative restaurant) if you want to order it in the main dining room.

I still don't like the concept of them charging extra for any food in the maind dining room. While I probably would like one of those extra nice steaks as an option, I really don't like them getting their foot in the door I just don't like the concept of ala carte pricing in the dining room.

If people want the steaks from Chops they should go there for dinner-

Extra charges for drinks are one thing but not for dining room offerings..

That's a bad change!

hcat, very well said. Dont start charging in the dining room for food. You know its the start, next they will charge for some premium fish/sea food items.

RCI and Celebrity are the same company, but looks like they are leaving Cel alone on this one. I will be taking more cruises on Celebrity and have already cancelled one on RCI.

Just came back from LOS. Had prime rib twice in dining room and lobster one night, no extra charges. Ate at Chops once, had wonderful filet, one person even ordered two and only charge was usual $25 pp. Chops steak in main dining room was definitely not listed on the menu as being an option. In MHO Chops won hands down over Portinfino. The only place I surprised was in Johnny Rockets where we thought everything (including shakes) was included for the nominal fee. Knew better next time and skipped the shakes, again in MHO not worth the price. That's my **cents worth. ;)

I agree but we found something even more troubling on NCL. Having paid to eat in the specialty restaurants for each night of our cruise, we found that there was a premium on top of the premium we'd already paid if we wanted the higher end things on the menu. It felt like a bait and switchto me.

They've started with Freedom of the Seas, that's the reason you didn't have the alternative "choice" of $14.95 steak on LOS (yet).

It's a test market on Freedom, I believe. If folks don't pay for it, it won't continue, I would guess. So, in the end, it's up to all of us to decide with our wallets whether it persists (or expands to X).

Not sure about "bait and switch," as the menus are available for viewing before making reservations, but I understand how you might have felt. X also has upcharge options in specialty dining; the difference is that X offers set meals, wine pairing, etc, whereas NCL has individual items such as lobster or a porterhouse for a charge on top of the charge. Carnival, FWIW, has a very nice porterhouse included in its specialty dining.

The cruise lines all trying to make money somewhere. Personally, I'd rather see them tighten up the slot machines in the casino than charge for a steak, but then you can't please everyone. ;)

That was badly written on my part. What I meant was that they don't tell you before the cruise that you have to pay extra on top of the specialty fee for the good stuff. You are right that you can see the menus once onboard. The fees did add up, though, and certainly increased the overall price of our cruise.

when rccl starts charging in the main dining room it's about the last straw for me with them. Hopefully it won't spill over to celebrity

Hi Brad 1185 :)

I have a feeling a lot will depend upon how well the experiment on the RCCL goes. If it gets a negative response they will probably eliminate it, but if it goes well they will probably extend it and consider doing the same on Celebrity.

Just say no, to all extra charges. It's getting to be the same as the airline. The actual price of the cruise means nothing, not with taxes, fees, surcharges, extra charge in the specialty restaurants, etc.

To the cruise industry: Charge a fair price, list the full price, and cut all of the ala carte garbage.

If there is a need for another line of ships for all of the people who aren't satisfied with the main dining room, etc, then create it, but don't serve us this class system on each individual ship and then say everyone is treated the same.

I started cruising because everyone onboard was treated the same (in general), and because it was one price (a price you could figure out without a calculator) for everything.

Not anymore, and that doesn't even include the frustration of flying.

Happy cruising to all!

Bob

We have only sailed RCCL once and IMHO their food and service were no better then CCL. Carnival ships are every bit as nice as RCCL ships SO why pay more to sail on RCCL?

We sail Carnival when we are looking for a low cost cruise but mostly we sail Celebrity where we still can get great food, great service, real formal nights, and folks that know how to dress for them. We also REALLY appreciate that X tries very hard to keep those improperly dressed.

It appears that X is the only line left (except luxury lines) that is still serving good quality food.

How much are peas as a side dish too?....

Are they going to STOP and/or Rebate , even in a form of OBC, the Fuel Surcharges now?

Oil has come down 40 % since July 2008 A.D.!

Or is that too just a One WAY Revenue Avenue (((?)))

Sorry as we have been cruising for Decades and remember the even the great BonVoyage parties aboard the ships we had and went to too...:D

Then when the Ship Trip commenced the great foods never stopped ..

All Inclusive for one paid for booking price... Drinks were more but inexpensive..

And no more...

With a Charge for basic Beef Steak:mad: now from RCL :NYSE that is and/or may be a signal of the demise to many people cruising... watchout as RCL already now has retired another of Celebrity's Ships this year too and NO BERMUDA(((?))) *YIKES*

Sadly, it was only a few years ago that the steak you could order in the Dining Room every night is the steak now served in Chops!

I've given up red meat except on extremely rare occasions; I guess I should be happy about that on our next X cruise this winter!

Eat hearty,

Barbara
