twirlgirl Posted April 3, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2009 You do not ever want to get the norovirus. I had it 2 yrs ago on Holland America. Over 600 were ill. Never have I been that violently ill. Will have to be careful next week on Liberty. Many people and kids on board

CruiseSlacker Posted April 6, 2009 #16 Share Posted April 6, 2009 I've just arrived home from the Freedom OTS. The last three days, the crew was spraying and sanitizing everything. They provided wet handwipes in front of the restaurants and shops. In the Windjammer, I pointed to the food I wanted and they put it on my plate. Over the PR, the Captain reminded people to wash their hands. It was on the TV 24 hours. The casino was sanitized and blocked off until night time. I had no idea how many people were sick. So many rumors. The shows and dinning rooms had a lot of empty seats. I did okay.
Vacationer40 Posted April 6, 2009 #17 Share Posted April 6, 2009 We had it! My husband and I both had norovirus on this cruise. It was absolutely horrible. We missed our whole day in Grand Cayman and had to cancel our tour in Cozumel. I doubt I'll cruise again - it was an awful virus. I couldn't eat for almost 3 days. We tried our best to avoid it by doing everything to keep our hands clean and avoiding hand rails, etc. Several other cabins on our floor had it and were quarantined. I believe they were taking extra precautions cleaning the ship for the next voyage. The ship went crazy trying to contain it so I believe many passengers had it. I hope the next voyage doesn't experience what we did.

Perhaps there was nothing YOU could have done, but rather what a staff could have done or not done. Sorry to hear about your experience. I work in an inpatient healthcare setting and got it despite precautions. As you said, it was 3-4 days before I could eat or felt realitively better. Happy (& Healthy) Sailing, TnT You might be right. My cabin attendant told me nobody in her section came down with the virus. She crossed her figers while saying that. Otherwise it would be a lot of of deep cleansing work for her.
ritaontherocks Posted April 6, 2009 #20 Share Posted April 6, 2009 It is HIGHLY contagious. With so many people in closed spaces and such close contact with one another, its very easily spread. I'm on the Freedom in June and sure hope its gone by then!!

Vacationer40 Posted April 6, 2009 #22 Share Posted April 6, 2009 Good point. I was wondering the same thing about the other cabins next to ours having it as well. Some cabins had room service almost everyday with dishes left in the hallway. Cabin Steward touching all this stuff?? We also had these ship workers come through with what looked like hazard material suits spray all of our balconies. Our room was completely disinfected after they learned we had it. There was a lot of coughing & hacking everywhere I went on the ship. We also saw people laying around at departure looking very sick. I am so glad we had a balcony cabin. I can not imagine going through this in a room with no access to fresh air.
sailrnav Posted April 6, 2009 #23 Share Posted April 6, 2009 Last I heard approximately 150 reported cases. Five of our group of twelve had some intestinal discomfort, one went to the dispensary and was tested and did not have the Norovirus. We washed hands at least every ten minutes it seemed. We had to use hand cleaner entering every area on the ship. All food was served by staff with gloves on. Salt and pepper shakers were removed from tables. Every surface of the ship was wiped every hour. The Windjammer was closed for hours at time for cleaning.

jwolf2006 Posted April 6, 2009 #25 Share Posted April 6, 2009 I'm sorry to say that RCI now seems to only care after the norovirus appears rather than actively trying to prevent it. We were on Voyager two weeks ago and NEVER saw a hand sanitizer. On all our previous cruises, they always had them as you entered the Windjammer and were encouraging you to use them. All they had this cruise were signs in the bathrooms reminding you to wash your hands! My cynical side thinks someone did a cost analysis and decided that a few extra outbreaks (certainly some would still happen even with sanitizers easily available) was less of an effect on their bottom line than the resources to have the sanitizers always available.
