  1. Venice is a unique situation because of all the possible docking locations. It a very popular cruise and there will probably be a lot of passengers arriving. After you pick up your bags, they will herd you into a group and escort you to transportation as soon as possible. On our last trip to Venice there were 60+ people. Viking is pretty efficient, other pax, not so much. Our wait was dependent on a passenger that had lost luggage and had to fill out paperwork. On our trip to Athens, we arrived very late and Viking hired a car service to take us direct to our pre-extension hotel.
  2. We’ve been to Australia but we never made it to New Zealand 🇳🇿
  3. Except for size, all balconies are the same. If you follow the link I provided above there are photos of the exterior of the ship as well as a section on cabins to avoid. I will note that the aft DV1 cabins have the glass angled away from you giving you more legroom when you sit down and a larger footprint.
  4. I believe it's tempered glass, not plastic. You can find pictures and more on this blog https://viking-cruises-cabin-guide.blogspot.com/p/standard-cabins.html
  5. Monaco was one of our favorite stops. We loved it. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2927474-almost-live-viking-sky-mediterranean-odyssey-april-2023/?do=findComment&comment=65245954
  6. When we docked in Naples last February, Mt. Vesuvius was covered in snow. It was cold and rainy at Pompeii. Bring a good raincoat.
  7. Viking has already made changes to their Mediterranean Cities of Antiquity and Holy Land cruise. It now stops in Sicily, Malta, and Rhodes instead. Israel will be a no go for years. https://www.vikingcruises.com/oceans/cruise-destinations/europe/cities-antiquity/index.html
  8. No, it’s all hand weaved by Kurdish weavers. We bought it during our excursion in Kuşadası when we visited a weaving exhibition at a shop. It was a government subsidized shop that employs graduates of a school that teaches weaving to Kurdish women to keep the skill alive. It is no commission so the sales pitch was low key. Absolutely no pressure to buy. There we learned the fringe indicates the type of material used. It’s a cotton base which then is hand knotted using a double knot technique with naturally dyed angora wool. The 100% wool rugs have a different fringe. Silk fringe is similar to the wool style but shimmers, is finer, and feels totally different. I agree that you’ll get better deals in Kuşadası. At the demonstration store on the Viking excursion, they will also deliver to your door back in the USA. It’s included in the price. As a security measure, you sign the back of your rug to ensure the one you receive is the one you bought. Cotton base fringe: Wool fringe:
  9. Yes, but this was in response to the post that there were no other included options other than the demanding Marksburg Castle. I do not believe Viking does not offer an included tour for those with mobility issues.
  10. Guilty Our rug (I do love it) Rugs galore IMG_9874.mov
  11. I was on a few minutes ago and I received an error message that an update was in progress. They must be making a modification of something.
  12. We’ve been on two VR cruises that stopped at Koblenz and both times there was an included tour of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress for those with mobility issues.
  13. That is standard for the river cruises. On our last VO Mediterranean cruise they had initiated a pilot program to do the same for Ocean. Does anyone know if this has been implemented on all VO ships?
  14. Not to mention no maintenance costs.
  15. Expedition voyages are now doing the same.
  16. Last January we had the some of the NFL playoff games in our rooms as well as a pool party for one of the games. In March they carried the Final Four.
  17. Aft DV1s 4122 and 4123 do not have a pilaster.
  18. Your subscription is most likely only good in your home country/region. Unless you use a VPN, the NFL app restricts access based on the location of the ip address. The NFL has licensing agreements around the world. On my satellite radio subscription, I could listen to anything except the NFL.
  19. That’s what they have done on the expedition ships. I loved the extra space and how their closets work.
  20. Burma officially changed its name in 1989 to what it is called in its native language, Myanmar.
  21. This information should be found attached to the email labeled: Important – Viking Final E-Document There is a pdf attached titled Your Final Travel Document This contains all the information about ship location, phone numbers, email address, emergency contact info, etc. For extensions it also contains hotel information. You’re not the first person to ask about this. Viking tends to send a lot of emails but this is THE most important one. I always download a copy of it local to my phone in case of emergencies.
  22. My guess it has something to do with GDPR data privacy laws. Norway has not adopted it and the website would have to implement these stringent security measures if it does business with the member states. The easiest and cheapest solution is to restrict access by foreign users. Some of these regulations are onerous. Under GDPR you have a “right to be forgotten” meaning if you request it, all identifying personal info must be removed. As a DBA the big hurdle we had was database backups, which can go back years. It’s implausible to remove information from a backup that may be copied onto a “write once” media. The whole idea of a database backup is to make archived data immutable and consistent at the time is was created.
  23. While aboard the Octantis we learned about Happy Whale, a community science website that tracks whales based on photos of their tails submitted by users. Each tail is like a fingerprint and once identified, you can track your whale as it is sighted around the world. https://happywhale.com/home
  24. Here is a blog about Viking cabins to avoid among other things https://viking-cruises-cabin-guide.blogspot.com/p/cabins-to-avioid.html?m=1
