  1. Thanks have to go to Arnold Donald for being at the helm for nine years. I have never met a more polished, involved, and considerate CEO. Welcome Josh to the top job. He has distinguished himself over two decades with the company in roles of increasing responsibility. Recently as chief operating officer of the corporation he also headed the UK based brands. He has a big job ahead dealing with a large debt to stabilize the balance sheet, but he is very qualified to tackle it.
  2. As I said, the folk's in the survey you cited are CEO's of a pony ride. In my world a CEO runs a S&P 500 company. The average compensation of those folks is (drum roll) $18.3 million
  3. They are pragmatic in the Steakhouse. If the venue is fully booked with people standing waiting for a cancellation, you will be sent to your cabin for long pants. If it is a slow night it could be "look the other way" night and a speedo with a wife-beater might be served. On five cruises this year the eatery was always full, and all gentlemen dressed the part.
  4. I had to chuckle at the average CEO makes 155K. That must be the CEO of the pony ride at Griffith Park. California pays Highway Patrolmen over 200K, lower management over 300K. Most teachers make 125K or better. Public Universities are paying professors 300K to 500K. I find it silly to hear teachers complain they can't make ends meet, while maximum Social Security is 40K. The largest problem facing the nation is the rapid increase in energy prices, dictated by a cult that can't tell you what makes a balloon go up. Reckless injection of cash into the economy is a secondary cause of inflation.
  5. Rooms on Mardi Gras on the whole are smaller than Panorama. 150 sq ft on Mardi Gras and 180 sq ft on Panorama. Elevators are faster on Panorama, and the steakhouse is better too. Mardi Gras is huge compared to the already large Panorama. Panorama has Joey Boyes, one of Carnival's best Cruise directors. Mardi Gras has a shower door instead of a too "friendly" curtain. In the winter months it may be cool and overcast in Long Beach, but by lunch on the first sea day it is all sunshine and warm to hot weather in all three ports. The time in Cabo is short, as the ship arrives in the early morning, and back on board time is 1:30pm. Bottom line is either ship is nice, have great crews, good eats, and enjoyable entertainment.
  6. My wife hit a hand pay recently using my card. They didn't care. She had my card because I had drinks everywhere and she needed an expresso. She decided to take a few spins on the way back to the room. They did put the jackpot on my card. I said "Thank you." I did get the cash from the cage and gave it to her. .
  7. Ask your steward where the nearest launderette is located. All ships except Mardi Gras have them, Some also have irons and a board for pressing.
  8. I love diving in the Caribbean with it's warm, shallow water and 150 ft visibility. The problem is that like a lot of technical sports it has become too expensive to attract large numbers of people to the hobby. I tried a Carnival excursion in Mexico, but it was a starter class as most "certified" divers could not clear a snorkel or adjust buoyancy to avoid kicking the sand. They also emptied a cylinder in 10 minutes at 20 Ft. If you have a buddy with you, you can find competent shops to supply gear and a dive.
  9. If the vendor cannot fill the provisioning order for a product, a substitute may be made.
  10. I saw this show before in the late 70's. Bad policies inflated the money at an astronomical rate. Gasoline tripled, real estate interest went to 18%, groceries doubled, and everyone suffered from stagflation. In 2021 history repeats itself. Expect all transportation and hospitality to increase at 1.4x the rate of inflation.
  11. I do like to sit in the front in the theater. I don't have a problem telling three people holding seven seats that house rules are first come, first seated. If they object I tell them I am going to sit and rest a bit. "I am sure they will find a seat when they arrive." Most of the time the party never arrives, and the seat stays empty for the show. As far as fighting or even arguing I just don't see it happening. Cruisers are a cool bunch and I like to think everyone is well mannered and always polite.
  12. I am in Port Canaveral the first week in October for two nights and found the hotels on the Island way over priced. I selected Best Western Cocoa Inn $173. all in. Watch out for taxes and baloney resort fees. It is a good clean motel with free breakfast! They have a shuttle to the ship, and you can leave your car there for $8.50/day.
  13. Lee, does your accident policy cover you internationally? Most do not. What if you become ill in a foreign country? You must also consider medical evacuation. It can cost half a million. Travel insurance usually covers lost luggage, delays, insurance for rental cars, and a live human to coordinate these activities.
  14. Paul, I hope your health problem is solved perfectly, and you enjoy a quality of life you deserve. See if you can drop the pooch's the night before flying, and arrive the night before. Grab a two star from Hotwire in Long Beach or Seal Beach and arrive fresh for boarding. You pharmacy can suggest an ice or dry ice carry bag for your cold storage medications. Airlines are a mess at the moment. Air crews, fuel, weather, and government regulations are all conspiring to change air travel for the worse. For sixty years I schedule my travel to land me where I need on the day of, unless I need a vacation day. Now I have a couple of rules. Only nonstop flights. Outbound always first flight in the morning (less likely to be delayed departing.) Two aisle aircraft if available, and if it ain't Boeing, I ain't goin'. No Scarebus for me. I will take an afternoon or evening flight inbound, because if cancelled little to no impact to me. I am flying in September to Seattle and returning from Orlando. Delta has change the flight times three times. No day changes, and outbound is arriving two hours earlier. Maybe we can find a place that sells coffee in Seattle.
  15. Yes, however, 16 days for Platinum/Diamond. Check in starts at midnight (Eastern.)
  16. I use the casino rates for b2b. Nice if there are different itinerary's and the same cabin.
  17. If you travel frequently look into an annual policy. Surprisingly inexpensive when compared to paying for individual trips.
  18. I would think there is a supply of chimichurri in one of the kitchens. I would ask a day ahead to allow them time to find it and bring it to the Steakhouse.
  19. Issuing stock is a good move. Yes it dilutes other shareowners but it gives them cash when cash flow from operations is reduced. Money taken today is worth more than dollars in the future, and the way inflation is going future dollars will be worth a lot less. A lot.I know, let's blame Putin. Yeah, that's it.
  20. The wording of the agenda item the board of directors approves each year has not changed. What has changed is lower management that has been ordered to save money where ever possible. They have now classified "Casino Rates" as discounted or free cruises. What we don't know is how much the casino operator pays the cruise line for the room. I can't imagine it is less than block rooms sold to the large travel agencies. I have been denied for ten journeys going forward. They changed the policy after I paid in full. Not very sporting in my view, but I simply take a matching amount off my casino bankroll, and put it in my "take it off the ship pocket." Problem solved.
  21. Brian and John? Together? Those ego's? To quote a famous movie line "We're gonna need a bigger boat!?
  22. Thank you for the terrific amount of time putting this review together. It has been interesting, and funny. Saturday I am doing a double on Panorama, and for August we are on the same ship (Miracle) out of San Fran, but slightly different stops. I love a hover ferry but we don't stop there. They cancelled the luxury train in Skagway which really bummed me as I am an armature steam engineer. It will be a good sailing made better by your excellent review. I had your review on the screen in my theater and my team had nothing but nice comments about your excellent photography.
  23. The reason the TV choices are so slim is that content suppliers determined that hospitality users would pay per TV set. They also pay per channel, and sports are very pricey. There are some packages like the one Carnival shows now. New ships from Horizon on have a sat/dist system capable of pay per view, and user selected packages. Cruise lines balk at setting it up because they are asking for more commission than content providers want to pay.
  24. That is your tableside seaPhone. Hold it to your ear and you can hear the ocean.
  25. That is the Havana area. It is never crowded and since min. age is 12, not noisy. There is some vibration felt, but no out of the ordinary movement. Even in the slightly rough seas crossing the Gulf of California I don't think people get motion sickness. My wife is sensitive, but has never needed medication on Panorama.
