Are you a Smart Casual Dresser or Not?

The what-ifs about packing are a necessity! Certainly we don't want to be caught with nothing to wear -- we don't want to be too warmly dressed or too coolly dressed!

 

I guess I can blame the what-ifs for my bringing home one unworn piece of clothing, each and every time.

 

Good point about other reasons to skip the party. Actually, I enjoyed it, and it happened to be very special on my sailing, as three of the four couples who have 100+ cruise credits with Celebrity were on our sailing. There were some other frequent cruisers, as well, and the Celebrity orchestra and various other entertainers were great. First, though, we were in a huge line to be welcomed by the Captain and some other officers. Even if Mr. B. had decided to attend, he wouldn't've waited on that line!

 

And by the time I took my seat, the bar servers were not at all swamped and in fact were coming by our tables to clear and to offer us libation.

 

Sometimes timing is everything in life, I guess. I endured the line but didn't have to endure any free-for-alls.

 

I guess a nice thing about those sea days is we have choices.

For smart casual I usually wear a suit silk or linen or a semi long skirt with matching blouse. I have clothes from cruises past that I still wear and they are still in style because they are sorta classic. We dress like we are going to a special dinner.

Like many other people have noted the smart casual description for men, at least, is a joke - pants with no holes and a shirt with a collar. I painted my bedroom with an outfit just like that last week. Description is meaningless because Celebrity does not want to lose any business. They will essentially take anyone who is not naked. I just came back from a cruise. There are actually people out there who have not bought a new piece of clothing in at least 10 years - or they found a place that sells antique clothes. Just get used to it - all part of the dumbing of America!

It is everywhere else through the ship...its transition time...daytime into night time. The expectation seems to be hurry up and get ready so you are polite, but that is beyond sensibilities. If those are the highly limited hours, then so be it, but what is occurring then is not all that unreasonable.

This will be my first cruise with X, and the dress code is so easy to follow. DW and I are doing an Alaska cruisetour, and the amount of clothes we are looking to bring is an issue (even with having laundry done). Jeans being allowed in the MDR was a bit of surprise to me, and don't know if that's what I'll dress in.

 

But I'm sure I'll be able to meet the requirements, as I don't think there will be a lot of opportunity for shorts in Alaska.

 

As an aside...Tux for formal nights!

on my 21 night cruise wore a dress all but 3 nights.. one due to the sunburn ii felt better covered up.

 

it killled me to see how tacky peopel dressed fro dinnner, happy hour and the captain events.. no shorts means no shorts.

 

can no one read.

 

off topic- same goes with people saving chaiurs for hours. almsot removed stuff but someoen got the hint when i sat on the deck in front of the chair. within in minutes had a chair.

Dining options abound aboard Celebrity. For breakfast and lunch, jeans, shorts and casual daywear are allowed in all dining venues before 6:00pm. After 6:00pm, this attire is allowed only in casual restaurants and cafés.

DH wore either a tie OR jacket each night we ate in Blu. (Both in Murano.)

 

I wore a nice dress each night, often with heels. Think one or two steps down from cocktail dress.

Last night was formal night on Solstice. Our 4-6 Elite Captain's Club gathering was held in Cellar Masters rather than Michael's. Guests in shorts were turned away by staff for this gathering!:D

What a delight when so many were present in Tux & Suits prior to dinner. Smart Casual wearers made up half the attendees.

It is refreshing to learn that they are finally enforcing the dress code.

Recently finished my 1st X cruise (mercury)...review coming later but overall it was wonderful.

 

I'll admit, I really don't like packing formal clothes but hey, if that's the dress code then that's what it is for a few nights and frankly, it's nice seeing suits and ties instead of fracking "jeans" everywhere.

 

Back on-topic to smart casual: Yes, we follow Smart Casual and frankly, I'd follow it even if not written down. I guess my curse is that I'm a 70 year old trapped in a 30-something's body and that's always been the case. It's not snobbery to where sleeves, a tucked in shirt, and decent slacks and shoes....it's DECENCY, decorum, manners that IMO are traits that are fleeting in our culture today. Some told me that Mercury was the "old goats" cruise and you know what? I really LOVED seeing all the grey hair all over the place. I loved seeing nice people, dressed properly, dancing to true music, and celebrating real marriages. I guess this is why we've ALWAYS picked travel venues aimed at "old" people. Now, on non-formal nights I will admit that after 11pm if I was going to the casino, I changed into comfy but dressy golf shorts and a collar shirt. But beyond that, Smart Casual is great. Even formal is fine and I can't understand the carping about it.

 

It was a pleasure seeing NO ripped jeans, NO muscle shirts, NO baggy MTV pants and backwards hats for 12 days. Felt like Nick-at-Nite reruns had finally come to life in some ways.

 

*sigh* If I had a time machine, and could take a few medical advances and civil rights in my pocket I'd do my darndest to grow up in the 50's. ;)

at 4 to 6 i would not be dressed for dinner at all! i eat later than you.

 

I found jeans in the MDR and shorts at capt events. at my worse on the cruise i looked better than most people dress for dinner. someone at my table wore a college shirt. she is over 60:eek::( i wore a dress to that dinner and all others.

 

when i saw you on Jan 15th i jeans i almost fell over. pictured you in dark pants and a Polo shirt.

 

you would of enjoyed the jazz group that played at night- private but many of us got to enjoy on the way to Live at Sky.

Well, not "laughing" exactly, but at least some of your post was a source of amusement.

 

It was amusing to learn that you've "always" been a 70-year-old trapped in a 30-something's body. Sounds like a particularly unwelcome and uncomfortable medical condition.

 

What wasn't amusing was the reference to "real" marriages, implicitly scorning unreal marriages, whatever that means to you (though I can guess), and it will probably generate some heated reaction here from those who fail to appreciate the humor. Can't say the kerfuffle, if it materializes, won't have been invited - - and deserved.

Perhaps I am minsinterpreting what you said but I find it ironic that you would only "celebrate real marriages" yet you later talk about bringing "civil rights" back in time with you. It seems as if you are choosing which groups of people have full rights and which do not. If so, you're right, you do belong in the 50's.

I don't want to put words in his mouth, but by "real marriages", I would wager Jediknight was talking about seeing a lot of people celebrating wedding anniversaries of 25 to 50 or more years. It seems to me that on the few cruises I have been on, there are a lot of those couples on board.

I think we all figured out what the poll questions are asking and it's good Poll. Now that we see it is less than 5% don't follow, I guess we can just concentrate on going crazy on Formal Night threads. And yes, this is only a small portion of the cruising public but the poll numbers seem to match up with what I've experienced.

 

We all go crazy over the one guy (always a guy) who dresses inappropriately. I think it's the same guy going on B2B2B2B.... cruises just to drive us nuts. Or for all you conspiracy theorists, it's a CruiseCritic Host who wants to keep the dress code threads buzzing. They just love them. It, along with the tipping threads, are the main ones they have to monitor and cut out posts or yank the whole thread.
